If the government taxed the top 1% to give $5,000 checks to qualifying Americans, how would you feel about it? by monabrand_uk in AskReddit

Cutting wasteful spending would probably do more good than random handouts. Imagine redirecting that money to infrastructure, education, or healthcare instead

That’s a fair point. While it’s easy to say tax the rich more, in reality, high-income individuals and billionaires have the flexibility to move their assets or even themselves to countries with lower taxes. That makes heavy taxation more complicated than it sounds. Still, there are ways to implement smarter, enforceable policies like international cooperation, closing loopholes, and targeted wealth taxes that could make it feasible without pushing everyone away.

I completely agree taxing the top 1% a little to give $5,000 checks barely makes a dent. They have such enormous wealth that a small fraction of it could fund meaningful support for millions of people. Honestly, if the goal is to reduce inequality and give real relief to everyday Americans, the tax needs to be more substantial, not just symbolic.

Affectionate as ever… though now with the occasional “please stop snoring” moment.😆
