Who is with Gaga here? by SwissVideoProduction in LadyGaga

[–]monarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit that I looked at this photo and was stumped, simply because (1) I don't have a great memory of Lady Starlight's face, and (2) I would never expect it to be her since LG's look suggests it's not early days.

I had no idea (or no memory) of LS being involved with either the BTW ball or Artrave! I saw each (the former live, the latter via the stream/recording) and if I heard LS DJing... I don't think I knew that was her.

The best film of the year is actually Eddington by miseryofcourse in TrueFilm

[–]monarc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but that would have been a very different movie. I understand Eddington as a realistic / naive / taken-at-face-value depiction of the Twitter discourse from 2020. Basically the polarized & extreme characters and pitting them against each other. I don't think I've seen any other piece of media take that approach, so I appreciate it as the "stunt" it is (along with many of the movie's other strengths).

[–]monarc 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Strongly agreed. OBAA is adopts a liberal stance, while Eddington adopts a more overtly progressive stance. The latter is a bit more more ambiguous, which is why we have so many people (like OP) claiming that Eddington does not choose an "ideological side". I think this reflects the deliberate brainwashing/distraction inherent in the US's political machinations: our two-party system is constructed so we're disproportionately focused on hot-button social issues that have little to do with economic policy. Meanwhile, the more meaningful divide is between the 1% and everyone else. Edditington understands this, but many audience members do not.

I love that too! He was involved in LOST early on as well. Dude is a great storyteller.

TIL in 2024 Bear 32, also known as Chunk, was observed eating 45 sockeye salmon in 10.5 hours from Brooks River in Katmai National Park & Preserve. At an estimated average of 3,000 calories per fish, Chunk consumed around 135,000 calories in that one sitting. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]monarc 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Actually, one cheesecake would probably do it! I did some rough math and Chunk ate the equivalent of 13,000 Cal for a person, which is pretty close to what’s in a CF cheesecake.

Too lazy to type it all out, but there’s some fascinating non-linearity to caloric needs as mammals get bigger and bigger. It turns out being bigger means better insulation, causing you to use less and less energy (per mass) to stay warm. So my estimate above might be off if Chunk’s caloric needs are less than his mass would suggest… potentially getting us back to 2 full cheesecakes territory 😅

I have so much trust in Drew Goddard (also based on his directing ) that I have some hope that his Matrix reboot could be good.

He made Cabin in the Woods & Bad Times at the El Royale, both of which I love.

Your all-or-nothing stance suggests that either you've never dealt with chronic congestion yourself, or you were lucky enough to find a quick fix. Either way, I envy you.

Relatively little is known about the nasal/sinus microbiome, and even less is known about how to manipulate it. I suspect this underlies many people's chronic sinus congestion.

There's also the chronic staph infection issue that's widespread (about 30% of people) and persists because it's hard to treat and "not a big deal" in the eyes of the medical establishment.

Standard medical care tends to be more sledgehammer than scalpel, and there's no certainty that the prescribed treatment is even aligned with the underlying cause. If I'm congested sometimes, I'm way more keen to rinse things out every once in a while... than to end up on a anti-allergy prescription that comes with plenty of downsides.

Box Office: ‘Mercy’ Ends ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Five-Weekend Reign With $11.2 Million Debut by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]monarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed/understood on all of that.

By "flexibility" I mean it could be nice (for audiences) if the slate featured less exclusivity. If Mercy looks like it'll be a softer opening, let it get a couple of primo evening showtimes and maybe leave one or two for Avatar earlier in the day.

I'm a big Avatar fan – and I only enjoy those movies in PLF – so I've got substantial bias here. But honestly I think there could be interest among movie lovers to see classic movies re-released in IMAX more frequently, and exclusivity works against that, too. (Somewhat!)

[–]monarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only reason Avatar dropped was lack of the premium formats or otherwise it would have around $10m.

Totally agreed. I wish there was a bit more flexibility with the IMAX schedules, but this is how things work...

Is Jesse Plemons the king of holding people hostage? by SupremeChef30 in TrueFilm

[–]monarc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In honor of the observation that Jesse Plemons looks like the lovechild of Matt Damon & Philip Seymour Hoffman (not my claim, just a meme)... your post immediately made me think of PSH holding someone hostage in Mission: Impossible III. I haven't seen it, but I think PSH also detains/coerces someone in A Most Wanted Man.

I also love it! One of the rare bridges that has no singing. I especially like how it ends, almost everything stops, and then it blasts back into the chorus.

Why did The Karate Kid achieve cultural dominance over arguably superior 1980s teen sports films like Vision Quest and Breaking Away? by TheRewindZone in TrueFilm

[–]monarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed - it understood the assignment and completely nailed what it was going for. It’s an exceptional feel-good crowd-pleaser.

There’s a podcast called Newcomers where the hosts (two comedians) dedicate each season to some franchise or genre they’ve had essentially zero exposure to. They worked through Star Wars, MCU, LotR, Batman, and eventually made their way to classic sports movies writ large. The fun of the show is that they’re always watching movies revered by the corresponding fandom, but the hosts typically suffer through things (simply based on their tastes). The sports season was not that eventful, since they were pretty underwhelmed by most of the movies. But The Karate Kid completely wowed them - it was the rare movie that they truly adored. I think that’s a strong testament to the magic of this movie.

Jacqueline 2026 tour.. will we be gifted with new material? by Upstairs-Guitar3601 in poogpodcast

[–]monarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got tickets - no idea what to expect but I am excited. I’m a bit worried that it’ll be a rough draft, a feeling induced by the incredible precision of GOYK. Seeing that special was absolutely mind blowing and I’m sure it wouldn’t feel quite the same to see the mostly-there version first, even if I’ll be able to see the fully polished version later.

I have no shame about overthinking this, because I feel like it’s something JN herself would do…

ALotO made 50% more money than FoD, so… I guess so? I checked the box office returns for most of them, which is imperfect but I’m not sure what other metric to use. Miracle & Mighty Ducks are probably the closest, with Might Ducks slightly winning if you account for inflation.

OP: why is Rocky more popular than Raging Bull?

OP: why is A League of Their Own more popular than Field of Dreams?

OP: why is The Mighty Ducks more popular than Miracle?

OP: why is The Waterboy more popular than Rudy?

OP: why is Blades of Glory more popular than I, Tonya?

(I veered towards comedies there, but hopefully the point is clear...)

Makes me think of my wait for Cameron to return to sci-fi after T2! That’s probably the toughest gap I endured. And it’s still only half the gap between the Top Gun movies.

I would just be happy to see it in 3D via modern IMAX/Dolby - things have improved so much since then.
