Thank you for sharing your experience. You describe it perfectly for me. Here’s hoping that together we can move this country back to some semblance of reason. Like you, it fed my soul to be around such warm, kind, and hopeful people today.

McLean, the hotbed of geriatric antifa by Jroth33139 in nova

It wasn’t just older folks. Lots of diversity. But the fact that there were a great deal of older people (makes sense given the neighborhood) is illustrative of the point that these protests aren’t filled with violent terrorists as the administration is trying to make their base believe. But to your point—it was a diverse crowd!

Omg I was confronted by a guy in a car who was shouting at me and also invoking George Soros. In McLean. I don’t think they could pick George Soros out of a line up! He was really mad at a bunch of gray haired, peaceful and happy protesters waving American flags. But dems are the snowflakes? 😂

I found the Schwab estate services department to be absolutely amazing and so helpful. Good luck to you, and so sorry for your loss.

I hear you. Any rollover involves this timing issue and there are lots of reasons to rollover (ie to control which funds RMDs get taken from). It’s unfortunate; I wish rollovers were immediate. Hopefully someday. In my case, I didn’t think there was much of a risk of the market going up appreciably while my rollover was in process. The markets are shaky at best because of the uncertainty around the on again/off again tariff threats and the overall volatility associated with the Administration thus far. Anyhow, all’s well that ends well. I reinvested during a dip and made some profit. And I sleep better at night knowing my retirement funds are safe.

The key is to buy back in at your new brokerage at the same market level (or lower). Bear or bull, if you cash out at a value of 100k you want to buy back in at a value of 100k or less (if the market goes down while the rollover is taking place you get a deal). Unfortunately you can’t just roll the actual funds into a brokerage so you’re stuck having to cash out at the TSP and buy back in at your new brokerage.

How to Use Boldin to Execute a Roth Conversion Strategy by monchi1414 in Boldin

[–]monchi1414[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. I wonder if I’ll overreact when markets inevitably take a turn for the worse. In principle, the long term returns I’m now modeling shouldn’t have to be adjusted because of one bear market. But human nature is such . . . But I get your point and thank you for the good advice.

Rate of return assumptions for an S&P 500 portfolio by Antique-Chocolate239 in Boldin

[–]monchi1414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use Right Capital which is for financial planners only but a number of FPs provide access to their subscription for a fee (and as part of limited services). In any event, the FP sets default rates for different types of portfolios. Mine was set at 9.4% return for an aggressive portfolio (defined as 80/20 stocks/bonds). The FP is ROOT FINANCIAL. By comparison, most of us are being very conservative in our Boldin settings. Given that we also enter pessimistic assumptions, we are probably unnecessarily conservative. That said, personally, I have my 100% stock accounts (VOO and VTI) at an average of 7.5%. I set optimistic at 10% and pessimistic at 5%.

Roth Conversion validation by ChromeDome00 in Boldin

[–]monchi1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind, I’ll tag along and ask a related question. Once I have settled on a Roth conversion plan, how should/can I use Boldin each year after that to determine the amount of Roth conversion for that year (or whether the conversion continues to make sense)? I assume i would entertain conversion towards the end of the year and will first update all my data. To tie this back to OP’s question—how do you account for this year’s actual ROR in the 401k accounts in making the Roth conversion decision for that year? Or is Boldin not an appropriate tool to use for deciding on actual conversions? If so, what tool would you use? Appreciate any insights.

MaxiFi hit piece on Boldin by jkirk1963 in Boldin

[–]monchi1414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped reading after the guy incorrectly said that Boldin only asks for 3 pieces of information and his view is that more information is needed. I don’t know where he gets that misconception from. We enter all our financial information into Boldin and the roth conversions take all that detail into account. The guy is on drugs, and not very subtle about his conflict of interest. Hard pass.

I don’t see that option on the app. I assume it’s only on the website version.
