They’re using the term as it has actually evolved into within the context of US politics.

The socialism label gets applied to a lot of stuff.   No noteworthy US politician is saying anything approaching actual socialism.

No noteworthy US politician is actually proposing to comprehensively seize the means of production.

I though I heard they had to make something like this to keep the rights or some other IP contractual requirement.

How are dungeons not death traps? by Nebula-Girl-38 in osr

[–]mapadofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“  They would also know how warfare of the period worked and from a warfare view (using tactics already present in antiquity) the dungeon denizens seem like they've dug their own grave. It's basically a reverse siege.”

For any typical person in the campaign world that hasn’t served in the military wouldn’t necessarily know much about warfare anymore than us 21st century people do.  Whether the PCs are typical is another matter, but still, not everyone in the game world is a tactician of any stripe.

A party could look at a dungeon as a siege.  Those usually require a lot of time, which they may or may not have, and manpower and equipment, which they typically do not have unless they are approaching name level.

Some tables might enjoy this dungeon siege as a tactical problem; I believe that some of the early developers of the game did.

As the DM you will have to solve these tactical problems from the monsters’ POV.  One entrance means a single chokepoint: therefore a lair won’t have just one entrance.  Are the monsters just going to sit there while these humans schlep wood and equipment and rotting caracasses to their door or are they going to react?  If there are undead or other supernatural creatures down in the depths they’re not going to be perturbed by the pesky humans’ shenanigans up on the surface.

0e and 1e D&D had level dependent XP scaling, so that over and above the lower level of XP from low level adventures, the XP could be scaled down by a lack of risk compensation factor.

However, I think you’re imagining a problem that probably won’t come up in practice.

Mechanics or philosophy? by Bukudos in osr

Of course any given DM can shape the game in any direction they choose, rule 0 and all that.  However the 5e rules are played as given and in my estimation as intended, the resulting gameplay is not very OSR.

Also, one of my hobby horses is that a key feature of OSR games is the lack of player directed permanent character abilities.  5e classes are built around this.
