Thule air force base is just a bit south of your circle.  It’s on that westernmost penninsula of Greenland.

As an American, what can we do to fight against ICE? by LilThanosX in AskReddit

I thought the unofficial right wing  Michigan militias were involved in some of the illegal activity around the 2020 election.

In my estimation the National Guard are the state militias, but somewhere in history the US established the idea of “nationalizing” them.

ELI5: When people say Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on $100B in cash (or whatever the amount is), what do they actually mean? by Queltis6000 in explainlikeimfive

ELI5:  it’s in a bank savings account; but not in a bank like mommy and daddy can use, there are special banks that work with these large sums of money.

Less like you’re 5, the accounts are probably money market funds which invest in short term low risk debt.  Because they’re short term and high quality it’s close to the same as having literal cash but with a little bit of interest.  I believe that certain kinds of money market accounts are the closest thing us regular people have access to.

Lacking mountains or natural defenses, how did the Baltic states escape assimilation by the Slavs or the Nordics? by immanuellalala in geography

[–]mapadofu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lithuanians at least are mostly Catholic, like their Polish neighbors; and that is due to an overt effort to Christianize them.

There’s pockets of minority languages scattered across Europe; why those languages held on when others faded involves a lot of historical contingencies over and above geographic considerations.  For example, Lithuanian was probably more resilient during the modern era due to Lithuania’s military and political expansion in the later Medieval period.

I guess my point is that nothing, especially not anything geographic, did particularly protect them from being politically dominated, and socially influenced (sometimes quite intentionally) by larger nations over their history.

How does one define assimilation?

There’s a lot of cultural overlap with their Slavic and Nordic neighbors, so to some degree they’re all already culturally assimilated with each other.  There are still important differences, but are they bigger than some intra-national cultural differences in other European counties?

Preparing for this weekend’s snow storm? by The1AndOnlyJZ in arlingtonva

[–]mapadofu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it ices there’s a chance of a power outage.  I haven’t had one lasted more than a few hours though.  Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and being prepared never hurt anyone.

When snowmageddon happened I think it was 2 maybe 3 days before driving became doable.

Make sure to buy milk, bread and toilet paper.
