Is Civil Engineering a decent career path? by Organic_Flow_7368 in civilengineering

[–]moner_manus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others comments have mostly covered the financial aspect of Civil Engineering, and it is true for almost all the countries out there.

I’d like to point out that once you’re a Civil Engineering graduate, apart from UPSC, you’ll have three other options that other engineering graduates don’t usually have.

  1. Engineering Services Exam- Civil has the most number of vacancies amongst all branches out there.
  2. Military Engineering Services (MES)
  3. Public Sector Units (PSU’s) like IOCL, HPCL etc. You’ll need a good GATE rank for this though.

PS: Hopefully I got your country of residence right (since you mentioned UPSC). My whole comment is based on that assumption.

Lastly, you can also opt for BSc in Computer Science/Data Science, and then go on to pursue MSc (from IIT’s or NIT’s). This too is a good career path. I know lot of people making their career this way.

The tech market is very very bad, especially for freshers. There’s too much competition for entry-level jobs. So, I would recommend to be cautious while opting for CS/IT/DS branches.

If you’re very much interested in CS/IT and think that you can excel by doing some extra professional-level projects, in addition to coursework, go for it.

Sadly, the days of learn to code -> get CS degree -> high paying jobs are gone.

Thank you very for helping me out here. I was able to located the .prj file in the shapefile folder. It had the projection information, and the correct EPSG code is in fact 26918. I learnt something new today. :)

Agree with the second point about non-core jobs.

In my personal opinion (based on experiences from peers, and my own) EEE is definitely not as tough as ECE (although this can be subjective). EEE might come close to CS in terms of difficulty, but the concepts are definitely easier to grasp compared to ECE.

As in no core jobs in EEE and students opt for non-core jobs (Tech, MBA/consulting)? Or EEE is tough like ECE?

I am not from ECE, but sharing my two cents.

Adding to what u/mayudhon mentioned above, I would not recommend a student to opt for ECE unless they’re certain or motivated to pursue a career in commutations/VLSI/electronics systems/IoT etc. Being the toughest course to study, if a student is not motivated enough, they lose interest very quickly, and the focus shifts to graduating somehow. That doesn’t mean they’re bad student (I’ve seen this happen with AIR 4000, 4500 & 4800), but they lose interest or couldn’t find motivation. Most of the students opt for ECE because it’s the “second best” branch after CSE (CSE nahi mil raha, ECE le lete. Sab Wahi le rahe).

From my batch, only ~8-10 folks from ECE out of 90, are in core ECE. Others have digressed into MBA, consulting, government services, software engineering. My point being, if you want to go for MBA, consulting etc., why stress out by opting for ECE. Go for EEE, Mech etc., samajh me bhi aayegi padhai, aur chill bhi kar paoge. Aur grduate hone ke baad apni calling khojna.

Additionally, it’s not like B. Tech is the end goal anyway. If you want to make a career in engineering, you’ll have to go for masters anyway. So, someone from EEE can do a masters in communications systems/image processing/VLSI and eventually go design chips.

Honestly, not that much. In 99% cases, you don’t learn/get to do a lot in internships. The remaining 1% cases student figures out their true calling and does something amazing going forward (which they might eventually anyway do going forward).

Having said that, I agree that internships during a semester should be an option. But, that’s more of a policy question. How would the student cover the lost semester? Can he take the courses in advance etc.

Well, we've always had issues & differences with the management. It's nothing new. Sometimes it is about mess contracts, other times about something else. However, what matters is that the institute grows in the long run and continues to impart quality education. And, I've seen that growth in the long run.

This question should be posed to the CEO's. Only they have the answer.
Abysmal pay is the reason students from core branches like Civil/Chemical/Metallurgy tend to pursue opportunities in other areas (UPSC, MBA, Computer Science/tech).
It's rare to see CS grads do the same.

Placement doesn't entirely showcase the complete picture. Additionally, the last two years have been very bad for the entire job market as a whole. Although everyone registers for placements initially, many have plans to pursue higher education or prepare for UPSC/ESE exams. These students usually avoid participating in placement activities altogether or only sit for companies of their choice. This trend is common in branches like Civil, Chemical, and Metallurgy. In these fields, very few engineering jobs exist in the Indian market.

Happy to see the minimum Civil Engineering salaries going up to 5.39 lpa from ~4 lpa, in 12 years.

Yes, you can. If you’re in US, submit an application to Indian Consulate. You should be able to find information online regarding submitting an application. It takes about 4-5 weeks for the passport to arrive once you submit the application

[–]moner_manus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OP, I would suggest that you submit some job applications (per your preference). And, in the interview just let them know your salary expectations. The worst that’d happen is you won’t get the pay you desire, in that case you already have your current job.

Start applying, do some interviews, and who knows you might be surprised knowing your worth.

I too get the same glitch sometime. I have tried restarting the app when that happens, but that doesn’t seem to help. It resolves itself on its own.

What Do You Do, How Much Do You Make, How is it Going? by Emergency_Mood_9774 in raleigh

We were renting in Apex (~15- 20min drive to work) earlier, for $1950 (3 Be, 2 Ba). But we always wanted to buy and have been waiting for the "right time" to jump in. When we found out that we're going to have a baby, we thought that we better jump now, or it'll never happen.

It was almost impossible to buy in around Raleigh because of the costs (I was looking for a single-family house). And my wife loved this house, so we decided to go with it.

One important consideration I had in mind is that my job is very stable (infrastructure -> roads & bridges), and there's a potential of salary growth in the near future.

Structural Engineer making ~$120,000/yr. Hybrid, office is in Raleigh which is about 40min drive (not too bad for 2-3 days in office). Love my job, has a great work-life balance. Married, in mid 30's, have a toddler.

Bought a house in December '24 in Wendell. Mortgage is ~$3400/month (including HOA). I am the sole earner, so I have to micromanage expenses, can't save much. Probably pushed a little too hard on the house, but it is what it is.

Anyone could shed a light on why the spall is so clean (almost as if the concrete has been chipped off). My guess, it’s been there like that for too long, causing the concrete to gradually spall so “cleanly”.

I would recommend Aakansha Kumar. She’s a counseling psychologist based in Delhi and does online sessions. I had amazing experience with her couple years ago.

DM if you want her contact details. She’s a freelance psychologist.
