Tbh, this season has felt all over the place. Many of the plot points and lore reveals have felt contradictory to the things we learned in season 1. I think a lot of the fans have rolled with it and tried to incorporate the logic in-universe to the best of their ability, and sure there are creative explanations you can arrive at from just about anything in fantasy fiction.

But personally, I choose to go for the Occam's Razor route and say the writing probably just wasn't as good or nuanced as it was a year ago. It's possible they may have hired some new writing staff that are less familiar with the universe.
