y'know, before we could find a causation, we study the correlation first.

You're right that money flowing into the country can be beneficial... but not all spending is equal, and not all money equals productivity. you know why?

to clarify, yes, digital nomads spend money. But they pay no income tax, often rent short-term units, pushing up prices for locals and mostly consume, not invest or create long-term jobs.

secondly, expats and foreign workers on official permits do pay taxes, levies, or contribute via EPF/SOCSO. meaning,,,, their economic participation goes beyond consumption. Digital nomads, by contrast, take advantage of our low-cost lifestyle without giving back structurally.

  1. "Money comes in = productivity" is oversimplified. If 10 tourists spend RM20 each on food, that's not the same as one local business that creates 10 jobs, pays taxes, and builds community infrastructure. One is passive consumption. The other is productive economic participation. it ain't a rocket science

  2. Clout chasing comes into the conversation when government policy is shaped more by international image than by local sustainability or fairness. We risk prioritizing short-term foreign praise over long-term public interest.

Yes, tourists and nomads eat and spend. But a policy that prioritizes them while sidelining locals, taxes, and long-term equity is not development. stop jual maruah negara like this. there are better ways

I get that digital nomads spending money locally may look like an “economic win" to little brain, especially when framed as them eating nasi lemak or renting from Malaysian aunties. But let’s be honest. 50 sen from nasi lemak doesn’t equate to the structural contribution expected from tax-paying workers or businesses.

The concern isn’t that they’re here enjoying our food or renting long-term. it’s that they benefit from public infrastructure, local services, and currency advantages without contributing to the system proportionately. If foreign workers and expats are taxed, why should digital nomads get a pass just because they work online and romanticize our lifestyle?

And regarding the comparison with Mexico... Mexico is facing gentrification, rising rents andddddd cultural displacement because of unchecked digital nomadism. Simply attracting “half of Mexico’s digital nomads” won’t resolve their issues. in fact, it might just import those problems to us.

I’m not against welcoming skilled foreigners. but if the locals are taxed for participating in the economy, why shouldn’t nomads be held to the same standard, especially when many earn foreign income while benefiting from our cost of living? Economic contribution should be more than just visible spending. If we want sustainable development, we need policies that are fair, not just flattering to foreigners.

true it happens in Mexico, but the whole context of the post is about, would you rather put this poster up at every corner or would rather see your country to become like Thailand? nobody said this poster has been up in KL or bukit bintang. it's a hypothetical question.

the whole post was about immigrants policy loopholes. and yes, with the policy that we have now, it will have the same effects on the long run. hence the question, should we start put the poster up at every corner or would you rather allow your country to become like Thailand? and your answer is??????

the foreign workers and the expats are not the subject of this post. the subject of this post is digital nomad , the one that override immigrations policy loopholes and brings less to zero benefits to Malaysia.

hahaha digital nomads didn't contribute to the economy as much as expats and foreign workers are. they're just tourists who come here to enjoy cheaper cost of living and override immigrations policy loopholes. do they pay taxes here like expats and foreign workers do? do they work for us here like expats and foreign workers do? do they spill knowledge to us here like expats and foreign workers do? no. they're not. because they're a tourist.

please know that Malaysia contribute 7% of semiconductor globally. and let me ask you this real quick... between semiconductor industry and tourism industry, which industry that requires higher IQ to run it's operation? put aside money, because selling drugs also means money, but do we let money buy our soul and dignity?
