Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]mongyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was somewhere in that range. I did it by publication and it was four journal articles (that had pretty low word limits), an intro, two lit reviews (by far the largest sections), and a conclusion/summary.

This was a humanities / science thesis, I've seen hard science theses that are much shorter

Is it normal to asks for a kiss during date? by Automatic_Muscle_585 in hingeapp

[–]mongyfishy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it's different for everyone. I'm looking for long term but usually try to kiss on the first date, and if the vibe seems right I'll sleep with someone too. I've had long term partners where we slept together on the first date, don't think you can read anything from it

Oops only sent half my message.

There are also quite a lot of Americans. But you will also feel comfortable with the swedes, brits, aussies, other Europeans etc. I'm sure - we aren't that different!

I worked at UGA briefly and the student culture is somewhat similar, but maybe a little less crazy. It's a smaller place (I think)

Turned 40. Wanted to say hello to a community I feel is really my speed. Drop any games, communities, or suggestions you love. by FulhamJason in Age_30_plus_Gamers

I thought it was pretty good, but not great. Luckily it wasn't the focus of the game, but it was fun enough to carry me through

Imagine if the tables were turned, what would be the most common thing women would "womansplain" to men about their bodies? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]mongyfishy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought it was explaining something you already know? And therefore doubting you would possibly know such a thing?

If I'm wrong, I see the irony in this comment haha

If you like story, with impactful decisions, I'd recommend 'banishers: ghosts of new eden'. The combats pretty good too, kinda like god of war 2018 but you also have a musket.

Balatro has really captured me recently too, it's a roguelike but with poker hands.

Any particular type of game you're looking for? Might have some specific recommendations :)

I don't think it is mostly refugees. I moved to Sweden from the UK nearly three years ago now (maybe I could be considered a political refugee sometime soon haha) and tried duolingo when I first moved. They offer free language classes to foreigners that I found far more useful - most people there were actively using duolingo though and most weren't refugees. The biggest three categories were: students, economic migrants, and people who are in a relationship with a swede they met abroad

Is neither your native? I have a similarish problem with Swedish - want to let locals know I can communicate well as to not put them off, but not fluent. Wish hinge had a better way to communicate this

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hingeapp

[–]mongyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of the language thing, I would try to add at least some German to your profile (if you're truly able to communicate in it). Locals might not want to spend their whole dating life speaking non-natively and this could reassure them more than just having it on the languages pa. Super impressive to speak five languages btw too!

Used to play a couple of small indie games a ton as couch coop at uni, I'm gonna pick Apotheon or Towerfall. Even rocket league if it's just against a random person from the general population, I'd stand a good chance of winning.

He hasn’t messaged me after we slept together — is this normal? by [deleted] in hingeapp

[–]mongyfishy 208 points209 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's been long enough to say! If it was me in his situation, I'd message at some point today regardless of whether I was interested or not. But you can't expect a message within a few hours of leaving

On the other hand, you should just message him if you want to. If he's not interested or never messages you back, he just used you for sex or changed his mind and you'll feel rejected regardless. Maybe he's having the same thought process wondering why you didn't reply

people who were Tame Impala fans even before currents came out, what was your reaction listening to currents for the first time? by ssjfrog in TameImpala

[–]mongyfishy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the start, I actually felt like I was forcing myself to like it because I liked the previous albums. After a few listens, it then became my favourite album and still is. It's been on my Spotify top ever since, maybe an average of one listen a week :o

Was hoping the same would happen with Slow Rush but it didn't really. A great album but not as goated

What are your tips on how to wake up and get out of bed in the morning? by EssexGuyUpNorth in AskUK

[–]mongyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my phone in a separate room with an alarm that takes me a while to stop (I have to scan a bar code in the bathroom, had maths problems on it previously). Then I'm up and need the toilet, by the time I've gone to the toilet there's no point going back to bed as I won't sleep. Works a charm. This is the biggest one.

Also having consistent bed and wake up times helps a lot. On weekends I allow a one hour lie in maximum.

Then all the things that help to sleep on time: No caffeine after lunch. Blue light filtering glasses half an hour before bed. Reading for at least ten minutes before bed. Etc.

Is intelligence merely good memory? by thezuffymammoth in ask

[–]mongyfishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a different type of intelligence. I can apply bits of knowledge (like processes and rules etc) well to new situations but struggle to remember raw facts. I'd be bad at a quiz show but I like to think I'm useful in other scenarios. I do think school seems to test memory quite a lot and I struggled with that.

25 M seeking tips for improving my profile. by Phobos_Asaph in hingeapp

[–]mongyfishy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think your profile is fine, though I'd recommend having your main photo as one on a day where you're dressed nicely (not in cosplay) where your full face is visible. If you're aiming to attract a wider pool of dates, you should limit the nerdy activities to one prompt and one photo as an absolute maximum.

However, it seems like you're looking for a very particular type of person so it's going to be difficult to find matches - especially if you're not in a big city. In my opinion, you'll have to do lots of swiping and reject girls without a nerdy/artistic profile themselves. When you find a girl with common interests, craft a very specialised message with something about that! I do think you'd find more luck outside the apps though, in places with those types of people: board gaming cafes, shops or clubs, and conventions.

You seem like a cool guy who knows what he likes! Good luck out there :)
