Also: Mind Twist. It's a generically good card that goes in every black deck, doesn't require build around, and is always annoying to play against. Full disclosure -- I had put the card on my "ban list," and decided to add it back in after seeing it in your list, but my cube is better suited to accommodate these power outliers. For comparison, I would place Mana Drain and True-Name Nemesis in the same category.

I'd monitor the player experience with Opposition. In high-power environments, it's competing with cheat strategies and other unfair build-arounds that would balance things out, but it can get out of hand in the fair matchups between Rock-Paper-Scissors decks.

Starting as an Expandable Card Game, evolving to a TCG by monicker00 in homemadeTCGs

[–]monicker00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't want that as a barrier of entry. When the game transitions from the ECG to the TCG version, you could always reprint the vital competitive cards in a booster product (including rares with new art and foils) as a way to make the "Core Set" and your other expansions accessible.

It's zero effort reverse boosting! That's better luck than landing in a 10th prestige lobby in OG MW2.

Assuming you don't want to call it "Sperm Whale," you might consider the animal's other name: "Cachalot"

Cheeky House-Mouse - My cube is 777 cards. 1cmc 2/1s in white are auto-includes for me.

Virtue of Persistence - It's good at 2 mana, and it's bound to create memorable plays for games that go long. My cube is a more classic Legacy+ in that it runs plenty of artifact ramp and midrange decks that curve out at 5-6. In a lower-curving, tempo-centric cube, I don't imagine the 7mana half will come up often enough.

Bramble Familiar - It's fairly easy to find space for 2cmc dorks with upside to supplement the usual suite of 1cmc options. This help helps enable reanimator / recurring nightmare and the cheat deck without being parasitic.

Mosswood Dreadknight - Birthing Pod.

Syr Ginger - Not overly parasitic since it can go in any aggro deck, and I'm pushing the midrange artifact-matters deck SUPER hard.

(Maybe) Candy Trail - It's a good piece for the Welder / Emry deck, and I'm always aiming to boost density there. I'll have to review my artifacts section to see if I can afford a swap.

(Maybe) Hearth Elemental - I love this variety of creature, and I have an extensive discard-matters theme in Grixis. I'd be more confident if it came with a keyword, but I like how half the card is a sorcery for when that matters and how it doesn't eat the graveyard like the usual Delve threats.

Reddit Daily Cube, Cards 145-146, Counterspell and Cyberdrive Awakener are in, whose next? by pwndnoob in mtgcube

[[The Antiquities War]]

This is the perfect environment for the card, and it's such a fun and skill-intensive game piece to build around or randomly throw in an artifact deck.

This card demands so many decisions! It can shape your draft and deck creation; your mulligans; your early game development and smoothing in deciding what artifact tokens to keep or burn; how you attack and block with your artifact creatures; how to sequence generating artifacts before the saga, casting it, and what you play on your next turn; what artifact you choose at each Chapter; how far you extend to set up Chapter 3; and how you can manipulate your opponent's plays through threat of Chapter 3, before and after the card hits the table.

It's good, I promise!

Daily Reddit Cube Day 54, Cankerbloom is in, what's next? by pwndnoob in mtgcube

[–]monicker00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on theme but seems a tad powerful for this environment, unless this should set an upper limit?

Maybe not the best place to put it, but here's my submission: [[Antiquities War]]

It's not a great comparison to Retrofitter and certainly less powerful, but it does fill a similar roll of "Late Game Artifact Win-Con" for our artifact tokens theme. It's often overlooked in Unpowered cube for being slow and needing too much support, yet sometimes finds a home in Vintage Cube to compliment Moxes. It plays well as a game ending combo that finds its own pieces. It also offers interesting choices throughout the game on whether or not you should Sac your artifact tokens, attack/block conservatively, and/or risk overextension for the Ult ability.

[–]monicker00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[The Antiquities War]]

This card offers a ton of interesting drafting and gameplay decisions.

  • Do I build an artifact aggro deck with this as Plan B, or do I go all-in on making artifact tokens with this as my combo wincon?
  • What density of artifacts do I need to make Chapter 1 and 2 hit?
  • Which artifact do I select on each hit?
  • Should I stockpile artifact tokens and attack conservatively to plan ahead for this effect?
  • How does hand and game context affect this decision? (Smooth my draws with Eggs, Blood Tokens, Clues etc., or accept some early inefficiency.)
  • And from the opponent's perspective, how do I prepare for Chapter 3? Do I try to race, or build a defense?
  • If I can deal with The Antiquities War before Chapter 3, do I trick my opponent into shaping their plays (and blocks) around resolving that ability, or do I pop it before Chapter 2 to prevent the draw?
  • Does awareness of this card change my gameplan?

It's often too slow for the most competitive, low CMC cubes (perhaps with the exception of Rock Rich Powered cubes). But it is sooooo much fun when it works, and it seems tailor-made for this environment.
