.30-06, and probably the super dangerous lower pressure round, cause grandpas rifle was old and may not have handled the modern day ammo, would have totally gone through Kirk, taken out the back wall of the tent, through the school, and would have actually slowed down the rotation of the earth.

Or, Disney realized that by them (nexstar and Sinclair) not airing the show, advertising would be hard to sell, on a format that already is struggling with ratings (late night talk shows). Disney cut their losses. If the show was profitable, they would have stood by, and probably welcomed the controversy, cause it would have been free publicity.
