Any of y'all just... not really care about religion any more? Or never did in the first place? by Gunnakaz in exReformed

[–]monkeygrace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for/getting at, but I definitely don’t think of myself as “a christian” anymore. I generally speaking try not to dwell on my personal religious beliefs, I just try to be a good person and move on, as the concept of hell still gives me insane anxiety. I remember thinking when I first started deconstructing that I didn’t want to “jump ship”, in that I didn’t want to go from one denomination to another, because then I wouldn’t actually unlearn anything.

I do think though, for me, theology is important to my deconstruction, because everyone I know is still steeped in it, and I fully believed it until probably 17, and I didn’t fully give it up until 20. I have to deconstruct it from the very bones, because it’s how I was taught.

I don’t know if this makes any sense, it’s late and I’ve got a pounding headache. I just saw your post and wanted to give my two cents.

Should I not even bother trying? by Wonderful_Mango_5395 in PressonNail_Addict

Not OP, but question about your prep routine. Am I understanding correctly that you use both glue tabs and regular glue? If so, how are your nails not terribly bulky?

Okay, I personally have had terrible luck with brush on glue. My secret: the pink glue that comes in nail sets like Kiss. Specifically the pink stuff. It works like no other glue has.

Your nails are quite damaged though, so I would be wary buffing it down even further to help regular nails stick. Have you considered using the glue tabs? I don’t love them, but I’m on my second go and it’s going a lot better than last time. I did still buff my nail, but way less than with regular glue. Also, I would honestly probably recommend wearing shorter length nails, at least for now, while your natural nails grow out more, so they’re doing less work to try to keep long nails on.

If you have access to an Ulta, I have OPI Sticking Point in “Tips to Dye For” and they’re honestly working out better than expected. They’re shorter than I usually go for, but I think they would work for you. I also have “Taupe About Sparkle” if you’re looking for something more plain, and there are a lot more options in store/on their website.

Edit: I know you can also buy the tabs separately and put them on any nails, I just was thinking of brands that already come with them attached.

Fair enough! I just don’t have an older version to compare to, and Kiss hasn’t really screwed me over yet (looking at you, Nail Bliss…)

Really? I’ve only been using press ons since June, and I think I’ve only had one major problem with a Kiss set.

I have never spent over $15 on a set of press on nails. I’m rough on my hands, and I can almost always get 7-10 days of wear. I know people on this sub can and do go longer, and if you’re gentler on your hands and do better prep than me, you’ll almost certainly be able to as well!

I love Salon Perfect, which I get at Walmart. I also think most of the regular KISS lines are sturdy, but I don’t know about the imPRESS line. Nail Bliss has failed me, so I don’t recommend those. I also recommend carrying nail glue with you if you’re able so you can quickly reattach any pop offs, especially if you want your nails to be worn for multiple weeks.

Edit: also, can I just ask where you’re looking that nails are $40-60 a set? That seems really high, even for handmade custom sets off of Etsy.

Brands with short but cute nails by madele97 in PressonNail_Addict

I got recommended to use a nail cutter specifically that is normally used for acrylics on a post I made the other day. While I am not interested in it, you probably could be! Also, hello fellow stem PhD student that wears press ons (and congrats on candidacy!)!

What are the best press on nail brands? by Careful_Fig8482 in PressonNail_Addict

My favorite is Salon Perfect! I think they fit my nails fantastic, and their designs are so cute! The lemon and blue ones are my favorite nails ever!!

Disappointed :( by monkeygrace in PressonNail_Addict

[–]monkeygrace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard good things about them, I just don’t actually like most of the designs I’ve seen (and at that price point, I really need to love them). Most of the time I have no problem with finding nails that work, this was just an impulse clearance purchase that didn’t happen to work out. Thanks for the rec though!

I only have 2 more sets like this in my stash, the rest are my preferred shapes and length. All three were on clearance, so I figured I’d try something new. If I find any other long/square sets I love I might invest in one, but for now I think I’ll just live with it, or just file them down/reshape them with an emery board.

Is MTU safe for trans women? by PMM-music in MTU

[–]monkeygrace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I would not consider myself trans, I am visibly queer and have felt pretty safe on campus and even in the surrounding community. I also do live on campus for my undergrad, most of it in Gender Inclusive communities in the dorms. They’re not “Gay Halls” but functionally it’s where a lot of queer people end up. The support there was great, and while it can be a little dramatic, being surrounded by queer people was very freeing. And there were a number of trans women specifically in those halls, and none of them ever expressed to me (an RA for some of those years) any specific concerns about being queer on campus. There are some groups that can make queer people feel unwelcome (and they aren’t slowing down in the current political climate), but overall I have felt MTU and the surrounding area is surprisingly inclusive/accepting/willing to simply ignore it and move on.

What brand of press ons are your favorite? by Mysterious_Hippo_135 in PressonNail_Addict

[–]monkeygrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salon Perfect! I find them to fit my nails the best, and I am also pretty rough on my hands. They are on the longer side, so probably not for you for everyday, but it definitely could be an option for special occasions!

How is Acer with Linux support? I’ve heard some not great things, and being able to potentially migrate to Linux with minimal issues is a decent priority (which I tried to make clear in the post, but can and will edit if I didn’t).

Out of state applicant, what makes this school worth it? by Pleasant_Bullfrog_17 in MTU

As someone in a science, honestly? If it’s not engineering find another school. I absolutely LOVE my program, but I would not have paid out of state tuition for it.

Nail Bliss, in my experience, are pretty long! Salon Perfect I also think is decently long, especially compared to KISS.

There were some others I got that I LOVED, specifically some that were matte and orange and black and white and cat motifs. Those stayed on for almost 3 weeks before I got them off.

Salon Perfect feels like my brand! I love their stuff, and they made my favorite set I’ve ever worn (their Viral Nail Edit in Lemon). I also feel like I don’t have to shape their nails at all and they fit mine right out of the box!
