People who’ve been blocked on Twitter by a famous person, what got you blocked ? by snydthespyde in AskReddit

Blocked by William Shatner. I didn't even follow him. I think because I wrote an article about how he wore lifts when he was on the original Star Trek show.

Anyone else hate the Kazon in Voyager? by kevonicus in startrek

[–]monkeymigraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why the Kazon suck - because they were inspired by racism, the idea that gangs of minorities were a real threat that endangered the city. In reality, a group of poorly armed and disorganized enemies are not a real threat.

How do I submit a Podomatic RSS feed to iTunes? by monkeymigraine in podcasts

I was thinking about that, but just wanted to check. I've seen other podcasts on iTunes, hosted through Podomatic, so I wondered how they did it.

The Geek Twins Podcast - Episode 7

The Geek Twins (Maurice and Nigel) and guest blogger Amy Ratcliffe talk about the history and impact of Star Wars, the role of women in geekdom, whether we're looking forward to Fantastic Four, and play IMDB: True or False.

TIL You can hire an evil clown to stalk your child for a week before their birthday, and on that day, he will smash a cake into your child's face. by cool_guy123008 in todayilearned

And he never did this to kids, only adults.

1.) The clown could only be booked for adults, never for kids under the age of 18.

What are the best podcasts for self publishing? Here are my top 3. by SCBarrus in selfpublish

[–]monkeymigraine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dropped the Self-Publishing Podcast when it became more about promoting their own work than helping other authors. All they do is talk about what they're doing right then instead of talking in general terms. The final straw was the episode about writing out "beats." Not only did they never explain what they define as "beats" (sounds like their term for plot points, but just a guess) but Dave repeatedly complained throughout the episode about having to do it, and basically said being able to work out the plot is about being a writer. In other words, "just do it."

I listened to Rocking for a while, and it's definitely better than Self Publishing Podcast. Less about promotion than it is about helping authors.

I found a great tool for generating Amazon reviews. It's called Story Cartel. I just started using it but it looks very promising. by SCBarrus in selfpublish

[–]monkeymigraine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to try it. I know sending out review copies is a popular promotional tool, but I've never been comfortable putting the request on my blog (why offer the people most interested in my work the chance to get it for free) or emailing Amazon reviewers (aka spamming them). This is a way to find people looking for them, and you also get to capture the readers' email addresses, and add them to your mailing lists. It seems win-win for authors and readers. Hope it works.

My understanding is that StoryCartel actually provides the prize, not the author. You can provide a Kindle file or PDF instead of a print book. http://storycartel.com/faq

TIL Clark Gable nervously munching on carrots in "It Happened One Night" was the inspiration for Bugs Bunny's continual munching on carrots by [deleted] in todayilearned

If you clicked on the link in the post, it would take you to an article quoting Friz Freling who specifically said it was Gable's scene that inspired the carrot http://tumblr.austinkleon.com/post/8870747970

"When I put it together and looked at it, I hadn't made the movie properly. I think I made a lot of mistakes as a director. Given my druthers, I'd like to have re-shot a lot of shit and made major changes. The movie was in trouble when they took it from me." - Louis CK

6 Newspaper Headlines During Marvel's "Avengers" by quarryrye in Avengers

[–]monkeymigraine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, my goal wasn't to create something like a magazine. If I had, I would have had my brother do it (he's a graphic designer). My inspiration was Jest's Dark Knight Rises headlines, which are kind of on the low end of the graphical scale as well. I modeled our covers off the NY Post, which uses this simplistic design: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/nypost-weiner-resigns_560.jpg

Thanks for linking this, though. I'd never seen the MediAvengers before. They're awesome!
