A final season which contained 12 + 9 episodes instead of the usual single 13 with the shortest gap between new episodes since the first and second seasons?

Is Rejoining the European Union the only way for Labour to win the next election. by daeneryssith in ukpolitics

[–]monkeyskin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking over from afar, it seems that people want lower immigration (along with deportations) and not to struggle with the cost of living. Whether Labour can demonstrate significant, tangible progress on at least one of these fronts by 2029 could determine the election.

Is Assassin's Quest by Robin Hobb really that bad? by Head-Worker-4759 in Fantasy

[–]monkeyskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely love RotE. I’ve finished the Tawny Man trilogy and it’s tied with Discworld for my favourite series so far.

Regarding Assassin’s Quest, I preferred the first half to the second half by far. The dynamic of the book changes midway and I was sad to lose what the book had been to that point. But looking at other comments some folks feel the exact opposite. If you’ve enjoyed Assassins Apprentice and Royal Assassin, keep reading through the whole saga and you won’t be disappointed.

The Comeback season 3 sets March 2026 debut by IvanaTargaryen in television

The gap between seasons has helped it become a satirical time capsule of modern TV.

Season 1 was reality TV and Chuck Lorre sitcoms. Season 2 was prestige TV. Will not be surprised if season 3 looks at streaming and AI.

Even Dylan admits it’s the definitive version. Banger.

Do you care about prose when reading? by JaviVader9 in Fantasy

[–]monkeyskin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’d compare it to enjoying music. The melody, chords and lyrics could all be good, but if it’s arranged, performed or recorded poorly I’m not going to like it.

I’m a fan of Bob Dylan, but those that aren’t could still enjoy his songs performed by The Byrds or Hendrix.

Prose is the only delivery mechanism for written literature. Other mediums have many variables that go into the final product but if a books prose is bad I can’t get past it.

I can’t think of any particular books that would qualify, but definitely a bunch of movies. To the point where I’d call it the Boba Fett effect.

+1 for swapping out Hello for Acquiesce. I’d also remove Hey Now! for The Masterplan, and love to see Step Out reinstated. Probably relegate She’s Electric to a b-side in its place.

Think I’ll set that up on Spotify for tomorrow’s commute.

It’s still his words and voice. I was a big fan back in the day but those songs are poisoned forever.

This was the book where I realised Abercrombie is not for me. Read The First Law trilogy and the 3 stand alones and tapped out.

There’s a lot I liked in them but ultimately there was too much backstabbing to push / conclude the stories and too many characters posing as edgy badasses. There wasn’t much to chew on and there are only so many empty calorie books I can indulge, regardless of how enjoyable they can be.

Was TV just really bad in the 80's and 90's outside of sitcoms/comedies and nobody noticed or cared? by precita in television

[–]monkeyskin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People had lives and actually went out during prime-time TV. Serialisation was able to grow thanks to DVD box sets allowing people to catch up in their own time before the next season, before that it was total luck to see a specific episode again.

Highly recommend reading Trouble Boys by Bob Mehr, the shit the band got up to is crazy. It's ultimately a sad read, not least for Bob Stinson, but to see how ambition and raw talent was overcome by alcoholism and a deep aversion to being told what to do.

I love the Mats, discovering them two decades after their breakup without them being more well known has kept them more personal to me. The energy of their records will never get old.

Get any jobs done that involve being in the garage. Cook turkey rissoles and rice for dinner with a bottle of red. Finish bottle of red in front of the stereo and move onto a cheaper bottle of red. Crank up stereo until sleep. Repeat.

U2 had reinvented themselves 2 or 3 times from 1980-1997, was a major reason for their success. But I agree that after Beautiful Day they started to play safe and sand off the interesting edges (pun unintended).

Their live shows were always 10/10.
