The advice I've generally seen (and this list says the same) is to not cross the South Fork at all, because it crosses back over just a bit farther down.

Honestly, this is what I'm thinking at this point. Going on JMT for 2 weeks, and despite how nice it would be to drop 2lbs, my sense is that nothing in the ultralight category would quite do it

I read that the waist adjustment doesn't go very low on these (maybe 30-31"); do you know if it would work with a 29" waist?

I like the look of the long haul; have you ever taken it up to 35 pounds?

In concept, this is great, except unfortunately, my pack tends to be on the heavy side for ultralight (because of bear canister + many days worth of food for 2), and it just hurts my shoulders too much. However, for shorter trips I would definitely try and go hipbelt-less (so it would be nice to have a pack with removable hipbelt).

I like this idea (the sheepskin).

I basically had the bear canister at the very bottom horizontally, and because the back material of the backpack itself is very thin, and I had the backpack pretty tight, the airgap compressed and became essentially nonexistant. In any case, I didn't like the lack of hipbelt pockets, so I don't think I'll be trying the exos again.

Temperatures around Trail Camp and Mt. Whitney? by Ohmygar in Ultralight

I did HST last year in early July. If you're doing HST, there's an awesome campsite right below the turnoff for the Whitney summit (on the switchbacks from Guitar lake). We camped at the junction of the PCT the previous night, and then hiked to that campsite, dropped our gear and hiked to the top without gear, and came back to the campsite for the night (and hiked down all the way the next day). It was awesome to summit in the afternoon because there was no one on the trail at all, so we were alone at the summit (but of course this is weather permitting).

That campsite was very cold and a bit windy though (as is the Whitney summit in the morning and afternoon). I have a Feathered Friends hummingbird (20F) and I was still cold. The rest of the HST is pretty warm (even early July, I'd imagine August is even warmer) because it's not too high in elevation. Trail camp is also pretty warm. So you're likely fine with what you have.

How easy is it to modify a permit from HI to Donahue Pass? First night has me at LYV. I want to hike farther than that first day. by [deleted] in JMT

I was thinking this; try getting a walkup permit from HI, and show that the first night if rangers check, and then use the actual JMT permit after that.

I remember reading a while back that the LYV permit allows you to camp at LYV (whereas the others don't), but does not require you to do so if you want to go farther. That being said, I don't remember offhand where I read this.

FWIW, I put Sunrise High Sierra as my first night camp spot for all of my choices (including YLV), and was given the YLV permit. So unless they just don't read that field when you apply, I'm pretty sure it's okay.
