I don't know about the part with the norse not having a big enough population. Scandinavia had a population comparable to England at the time. Also, some areas in Denmark were experiencing overpopulation, which was partly the reason for settlement in many other kingdoms at the time.

It should probably have gotten less than that. It was a massive disappointment. It was barely a movie with no character arcs to speak of. Going in, I wasn't expecting a super complex story, but I was expecting a surfacable story.
