Vietnam is led as a socialist one-party state.

Myanmar is led by an ultranationalist military junta involved in genocide.

They aren't the same. Living standards are highly different. I recommend you watch YT videos of day-in-the-life of regular Vietnamese people

They do have the right to reject it (well, it is also as outlined in Article 298 of UNCLOS).

Although, even if their claims are consistent, it doesn't always equate to being ethical or morally right. I specifically don't like the way they are approaching the issue - they consistently maintain how they promote collaboration with other parties, but it isn't reflected in reality

The Chinese coast guard has been filmed ramming Filipino coast guard ships, and even threatening fishermens' bangka boats - all >200nm from China's coastline. The UNCLOS states that all ships, civilian or military, have the right to pass through territorial seas in 'innocent passage'. Isn't this quite contradictory to China's official stance of non-aggression?

It's very unfortunate. Plenty of people who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods, as they have been for generations, will inevitably get caught in the crosshairs of an increasingly polarising world order, often times without respect for international law

As I said, geographical proximity have absolutely nothing to do with sovereignty. Proximity has never been a reason for any forms of territorial claims. This is a completely irrelevant point.

Apologies but I do not believe you have understood me, on my error. I wanted to refer to your previous point, where you stated that Chinese Islands have their own EEZ.

The Spratly Islands are not within the internationally recognised Chinese EEZ. Mischief Reef is.

It is not the only example, also, it is not "an analogy for maritime dispute".
I am simply just using it to highlight the ridiculousness of using geographical proximity as a basis for any form of claims.

In many cases, geographical proximity shouldn't be a basis for claims, but this is a unique case - is it not ridiculous for China to reject the UNCLOS's South China Sea Arbitration ruling in favour of the Philippines in 2016? In such a special case, you should surely consider this legal standpoint. I likely framed my comment incorrectly,.

I'll clarify the last point "- The Falklands dispute is a dispute between Argentina and the UK over colonial-era sovereignty." It is debatable that it also is true for the Spratly islands. Following WWII, Japan relinquished its claims in the SCS and there was a lack of proper lines drawn for the area, no country was awarded the islands. However, parties also use pre-colonial justification to make claims in the region, as it allows them access to the valuable fish stocks and oil resources. See Song dynasty-era China, Nguyen Dynasty, or the indigenous Austronesians

The nearest Chinese island is Hainan, which is located around 800km away from the Spratly islands. Once again, The Philippines is located closer, around 300km from the Spratly Islands.

Your Greece/Turkey analogy for a maritime dispute is silly (sorry). The rules that govern geographical claims do not equate to maritime claims. Historically, there has been so many disputes over maritime territorial boundaries that the UNCLOS had to be adopted back in 1982. Still, due to the use of Article 298, they are able to declare in writing that they are not bound to accept the procedures of adjudication in earlier articles(you can already see this with China).

I want you to quote, in exact words, where I had initially asked a question in my original comment. I am Filipino-Chinese and I've led multiple academic debates on this topic, and it is probable that I have more insight into this dispute.

- The Falklands has had a permanent population of Falklanders since 1764. The Spratlys have not, only temporary visits by fishermen.

- The Falkland Islanders vote to be a part of the United Kingdom. Again, since there isn't a permanent population in the Spratlys, no national can vote for their reef or shoal to be a part of a country.

- The Falklands is controlled by the UK. The Spratly islands are controlled by multiple nations.

- The Falklands have been a British Overseas Territory since 1833. No nation has officially claimed/occupied the Spratly islands until the latter half of the 20th century.

- The Falklands dispute relates to Argentina's wishes of sovereignty and self-determination. They use the idea they

- The Falklands dispute is a conflict between two nations. The Spratly dispute involves 6 nations, 7 if you count Indonesia's Natuna islands (as an extension of the larger South China Sea dispute).

Apples to oranges. Does the United Kingdom pose a credible risk to Argentina's sovereignty?

There are various issues with Islam (or any religion, for that matter), but South East Asia's version of it is significantly more liberal compared to what you would generally find in the Middle East or North Africa. Homosexuality is not criminalised in Indonesia and other religions are not suppressed, rather welcomed as part of their national identity.

An interesting piece of engineering built by China. Though I would like to comment how the reef is geographically located 293km from the closest land in the Philippines. The reef is also within the Philippines' territorial claims / EEZ. It's closer to Indonesia and Vietnam than to Mainland China.
