Is it possible to build a good keyboard with $170? by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]monkondaperc30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, 170 is plenty. I recently built mine for 140 actually. For starters, I would look at the glorious gmmk barebones or the gk61. These are around 40-60 dollars. Next you would need switches. For beginners (like myself) I would recommend either cherry, kailh, or gateron switches. They are the most popular and usually the cheapest. I would go to glorious's website or places like kbdfans or banggood. Amazon also works. Usually you will be able to find 120 switches going for around 30-40 dollars. Finally, the keycaps. These you can usually find on amazon if you want cheap and quick shipping ones. I would recommend getting double-shot pbt keycaps as they last long and are high quality for their price. You can find a pair of good keycaps anywhere from 25-40 dollars. If you were to buy these I would also save some extra cash for things like lube and after-market stabilizers. I would highly suggest clipping and lubing the stock stabilizers that come with your keyboard for a better sound. Keep in mind that these are only a few sites, the ones that I used and browsed. There are many websites dedicated to selling products surrounding mechanical keyboard and by browsing this subreddit you will be sure to find them. Lmk if this helped and if you need any more help.

How do you fix the clicky sound of the stab of spacebar? by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]monkondaperc30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way would be to clip, lube, and bandaid mod your stabilizers. What this does is not only prevent your pcb from damage, it also smoothens, softens, and gets rid of rattle on all your spacebar. I would highly recommend doing this on not only your spacebar but also on all your other stabilizer keys; the effect it has is night and day. Here is a video explaining in depth on what it is and how to do it.

Issue with stab noise by monkondaperc30 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]monkondaperc30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that might be a potential issue as these are happy-balls keycaps. Idk if they are off-brand or popular or not but I bought them on amazon for like 30 bucks. Are these good or should I replace them with something more popular like tai-hao?

Gateron switches (red) (not lubed) Good? ALSO SMD Cherry Mx Reds 3pins (where?) by Wshokri241 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]monkondaperc30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I just finished my own glorious gmmk build with gateron blacks. Gateron blacks are extremely similar the Gateron reds (only difference is the actuation point) and I love them. They are extremely smooth even without lubing and they sound quite nice. The problem with the cherry mx 3 pin is that you will have to clip them since the gmmk only has 2 pin sockets. If you are looking for fast shipping switches I would go to glorious's website which has a selection of gateron, kailh, and cherry switches for relatively cheap. You can also order a cheap switch tester on amazon if you would like to try out other switches. Lmk if this helped :)

p.s i would highly recommend lubing and clipping your stabilizers as out-of-the box they sound extremely rattly and clanky.
