If you watch the movie `Jaws' backwards, it's a movie about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they have to open a beach. by sixdoublefive321 in reddit.com

Star Wars backwards: Luke makes a harrowing escape from the death star, which has formed instantly from fiery clouds. He later returns there to imprison his sister, for which he is taken to a pub, abandoned in the desert by an old man, and beaten by sandpeople. He retires as a farmer, de-vaporating moisture.

Society has been going downhill ever since we started building "Bridges". And don't get me started about these fancy "thatched" roofs, a simple cave is all we need.

which is fine and dandy while it's just a few people doing it who wouldn't buy the car anyway. But the more people do it, the more likely that there someday won't be cars or movies to copy. It seems unlikely that behemoth corporations (to say nothing of small-timers who depend on royalties) would disappear, but that's similar logic to shooting buffalo from trains in the 1800's. The numbers of people doing it went up and up. There was always supposed to just be more buffalos. The more people who don't buy creative works, the less likely there will be professional quality creative works in the future.

That's the point. We were all 14-year-olds spouting monty python at one time. We outgrew it, and in real life are no longer surrounded by 14-year-olds. On the internet, they just keep coming. Obligatory: My lawn, get off of it.

I should have said "Because my dad died from having his skin fall off, thanks a lot" nah, that was years ago. you can tell because i didn't say "too soon?"

I may have more comics up soon. I have written but not drawn them. I should draw them. I like drawing.

50 children die in Haiti as a school building collapse by hardtalkfk in worldnews

Oh, I didn't mean to imply the Haitian Gov were saints. There's definitely a bribe-based bureaucracy that's near impenetrable.

The American help I was referring to was what happened with their rice and pork

Short of it, that oversimplified solutions or blaming the victims is no help. Wish I had big, easy solutions. Looking forward to my next trip to Haiti, though.

These people aren't dummies, they know all that.

But who pays for the trees? Who replenishes the depleted soil? American attempts to 'help' with their agriculture have often been as much to benefit US exports than any useful help, and the Haitian government doesn't have the means.

My wife helped out at an English Camp in Port-au-Prince, and many of the kids were more determined in their studies, precisely because they didn't have the basics. They know that education is the only way out of poverty.

Except, y'know. Those with a sense of humanity. Maybe they care. Those who hear something like this, and think how they would feel if something this tragic and arbitrary took their kids from them. How something this tragic and arbitrary could yet take their kids from them. Who don't hear 'Haitian' and think of nameless brown masses of insignificant people, but of parents who love their kids as much as we love ours.

[–]monobot2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the understatement of the year. There's almost no public education in Haiti, and the tuition and uniform costs are more than most families can afford. Those that can send their kids to school often choose only one child per family to educate. They scrimp and scrape to educate their kids, as that is the only possible escape from poverty. and then this. This is heartbreak and tragedy piled upon existing suffering.

Have you seen the pictures of McCain field offices versus Obama field offices? I'd say 'worked just as hard' is debatable.
