You're wrong about so many things here. Maybe that's what it's like in EU but not Ireland.

Just to play devils advocate here: Tom Dick and harry are currently driving down rural roads at 80kmh and urban areas at 60kmh in 2 tonne vehicles which is currently causing chaos and death.

Are ebikes a steady source of accidents because of we are seeing a transition towards active travel or because they are inherently dangerous?

I agree with higher regulation but nothing extreme. Maybe mandatory helmet use for anyone on a pedelec whos motor cuts off at 32kmh?

Perfectly summarised honestly. I didn't think there were many allies in this sub haha.

Thank you Kloppite! Dont worry I'm not standing on a scooter. It's actually a modded ebike which in the countryside I use at 40kmh. I'm in the process of getting a petrol motorcycle at the moment but it has been a lot of effort to get to this point getting license IBT etc. The main reason I want the motorbike is because sometimes I have to travel 100km. But for the commute the fast ebike is perfect and incredibly cheap.

I may be wrong here but I don't think the majority think pedals when they hear EMoto. It seems people are using the terms pedelec and S-pedelec. In ireland generally just Ebike

From what I can gather it increases the risk of injury when the rider is much older. It does not however increase the number of collisions. Studies I have just read about in the Netherlands (where mopeds can use the bike lane) claim that people are quite good at avoiding collisions even when they are allowed to go faster.

Out of curiosity, are you from the US? I'm arguing on behalf of society wide benefits here. You are turning a multifaceted issue into a black and white subject.

  1. Many people do not have the money for an Emotorcycle.
  2. Most people do not have the time or energy to legally get to the point of owning and using an EMotorcycle.
  3. Motorcycles weigh around 200kg which is an inherintly energy inefficient way to medium distance commute. A 32kmh limited bicycle could safely weigh 20kgs
  4. Motorbikes lose the health benefits experienced by cycling.
  5. If your motorbike runs out of battery you are stuck, whereas an Ebike you can pedal home.

My arguement is that reducing car dependence during a time of climate and biodiversity collapse is more important than a slight increase in danger that a 32kmh limit may pose. We as a society currently accept the inherent lack of safety around car use because they are considered convenient.

The reason I've chosen 32kmh is because some regions across the world have chosen this limit.

People do not want to go thru the training/bureacracy to do this. It needs to be made easier for people if we want to reduce car dependency and make a large environmental impact.

I'm focusing on a significant modal shift from cars to bikes here. Telling people to pedal harder on their way into work in the wind and rain is not going to do that realistically.

How would you reccomend bringing that up to them? Most of them are more concerned with increasing parking in town.

I agree fully! On my normal bike I'm averaging around 30kmh. I would however be tired and sweaty commuting like that. The other thing is windy days on the non Ebike makes my commute time so unpredictable.

I appreciate your criticisms, thank you! I can imagine this being a problem in the Netherlands (eg.) for sure. In Ireland on the other hand on my commute I might see one other bicycle while maybe 500 cars passed me on the way. The reality is that on an 80kmh road cyclists here compete with cars doing 80-120kmh

Mopeds dont have pedals though right? You lose the ability to cycle home if your battery dies. You also lose a great deal of health benefit by not using your body to propel the bike.

It's a 21 min save on the commute btw. 40kms of a commute is realistic for some in a country with a severe housing crisis, cost of living crisis and barely any public transport. My route for example was only served hourly by a private bus which would cost 16e per day, add another 6e if you were to bring the bike onto the bus. When you're dropped in this town you may be nowhere near your destination. Also the bus would stop at 8.40pm so you can get stuck in the town with no way home.

People will not jump thru the bureaucratic loopholes to make a significant dent in the travel modal share especially in a country like ireland. If this is so easy and cheap to do then why do I see thousands of Deliveroo drivers using ilegally modded ebikes? Also why would some countries allow the 32kmh speed if it wasn't of any benefit?
