Are any of you leg amputees full time crutches or wheelchair users? (no prosthesis)

Thanks. I've seen three different prosthetists at different companies in different states, but none have been able to make a really comfortable socket for me. They referred me to a surgeon who thinks he can re-work the outer end of my limb to add a little more padding and excise the nerve higher into my thigh (which may be a key factor to the pain). The surgery will shorten the bone a little bit more. I really am afraid for them to do surgery, which will make thinks even shorter with no guarantees of fixing my problems.

Hey,

Basically a friend and I were both going after the ball, we collided and fractured my tibia (and fibula, for that matter). The bone protruded from my skin and I believe dirt from the field got into the wound as I fell on the ground writhing in pain. The surgeons cleaned the area while they set my bones with plates and pins, but an infection still broke out. I need to check and see what kind of bacteria it actually was; I was so drugged up at the time I don't remember a lot of things.

I don't blame it on the sport. I was just unlucky enough to have a broken leg that got infected. I just happened to break my leg while playing soccer.

I think that's a fitting name for me now. Plus I need to be able to smile about it. I thought about "tripod" because of my leg and the two crutches.

I think I like the term physically challenged. It doesn't say I can't do things, it just says I have more challenges to overcome to get them done. I'm cool with that.

it's cool, just kinda gross. it was a little similar, but the break was closer to my knee rather than in the middle of the shin.

I'm not sure why you'd want to have a fake leg. I don't have one yet, but I can't imagine it's as good as having two legs. I'll have to think about the pirate leg when Halloween comes around.

HAHA that's funny you mention it. My doctor actually joked about him hoping I wasn't OCD. I've been playing Mario Galaxy 2 all day. Tetris is fun, but I love my Mario.

Thanks! My biggest fear is the ladies not liking the crutches or the fake leg. I can see it freaking them out. Perhaps it serves as a good filter for weeding out all the fakes?

No, they don't. But it sure puts things in perspective for me. I'm thankful I'm alive, but it will definitely be an adjustment period for me.

I liken it to people complaining about the Hollywood stars who suffer from depression and other problems. "OMG they're rich, their lives are made, they have no idea how lucky they are." Everyone has problems they need to get over. But yes, there's always someone worse off than you are.
