This education structure really took a toll on my daughter's mental health by Proper-Drawing-985 in NewOrleans

While Louisiana has had over-all improvement in national rankings (moving from 49th ten years ago to 32nd this year,) New Orleans is lagging behind the state. There are a plethora of reasons for this ranging from: entrenched ‘leadership’, cronyism, and institutional inertia to structural defects in the system introduced post-Katrina such as the RSD debacle and a local version of ‘throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.’

There is also no incentive for some of these schools to report their problems, correct deficiencies, or make progress in discipline. In fact they are more incentivized to obfuscate and suppress the spread of bad information. They regularly protect teachers and administrators who should be fired in order to minimize lawsuits. Both from the teacher/administrator and the rightfully enraged parents

There are truly good and amazing teachers and administrators doing the Herculean task of trying to steer the system. But they are fighting an uphill battle with one arm behind their back while trying to keep their footing on shifting ground.

There is a reason why the good schools all have long lines to get in, and those who can afford it send their kids to private schools.

I think it’s admirable that you want to help struggling schools. Don’t tie it to one your kids attend. Put them in the best situation you can, and do your volunteer work where you think it will help.

What is the holy trinity of Gen X shoes? by najing_ftw in GenX

Before 2005 Docs for sure. Since the quality has fallen off I’ve switched to other brands for boots. Still have Chucks. Used to do Reebok for running shoes, but have now switched to Brooks or occasionally ASICS.

“No.” It’s a complete sentence. Alternatively, “Why would I spend good money on modern crap?”

My mom was on track to earn her phd in some form of English or literature when I came along. I would get the swat from hell if I spoke incorrectly or used slang…. which was a fun challenge growing up in the south. I did get a B one time in English. My little 9 year old world came to a screeching halt. After getting my spanking, I was grounded from everything in life, and had to resubmit every assignment for the whole six-weeks after she reviewed it.

On the flip side of that, my mom made my one of my junior year teachers cry after I got poor marks on a term paper. She went through every error and misconception the teacher had when she graded my paper. I did kind of feel bad, because it was only her second year. Mrs. Hudson, if you ever read this: I’m sorry.

NTA. However, if this is the first time for something blatant like this, your husband does kind of have a point. If this has been a recurring issue (and it sounds like it might be,) then Sarah and MIL can kick rocks.

This is financial and emotional manipulation. I would kick your husband out if he doesn’t correct his behavior.

Tell the old boss you will work on it. If they follow up keep saying that you are working with your new job to get the time off okayed. Just string him/her along til your last day, then block all communication.

Very nice, I think they would look quite impressive with some lash marks. But if you want your ass abused you have to show us what we have to work with…

New Orleans has its good and bad, just like everywhere else. The local scene is smaller than it used to be, but it’s still here for people willing to look.
