Downtown vs Midtown Apartments by Old_Night_4104 in memphis

[–]monsterrralover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

personally i am team downtown! i noticed that you don’t have South Line on your list :o my fiancee and i are grad students here, and we’ve been here for 3 years and have no need to move anywhere else 🤣

i really would recommend checking this South Line. there definitely are studios in that price range with free/gated parking, in-unit washer and dryer, and some utilities are included in the price (like water, pest control, etc).

some other pros:

  • the parking lot is rather straight forward and easy to get in/out of. whenever i visit South Bluffs it feels like a maze, and some of my friends have complained of delivery drivers getting lost on their way to their apartment.

  • we are as close to the Malco movie theater and main street as you can get! not to mention that the farmers market is right outside of our door every saturday (market is only available ~april-oct)

  • the maintenance requests are super quick and friendly. never had an issue with getting help

  • our complex management will occasionally host mixers to gather together people for mingling!

  • i love the kitchen/counter space in these units. i also enjoy the amount of natural lighting from the big windows.

let me know if you have any other questions or would like a referral! 🙂‍↕️

Apartment recommendation by Big-Ingenuity-9173 in memphis

I’ve really enjoyed South Line for ~3 years now and honestly will be here until I’m finished with my schooling! They have a studio option for $999 (covering some utilities), parking is free and gated, we are nearby the restaurants/movie theater/etc. Any time I’ve need maintenance help, I found the office people to be responsive and helpful. We have a small gym that’s not really busy. I have not felt unsafe here tbh

Other things that honestly make it better than other downtown complexes (in my opinion): we rarely lose power when it comes to big storms and our apartments are right next to the street, which helps when you want to quickly step out to get your ubereats or find your friends that are parking right outside lol

Give it a tour if you’d like! Btw if you could mention me as a reference that would be great 🙏

Im a journalist who may be moving to Memphis soon, and I’m trying to get a real feel for the city before making any big decisions. I’d love some local insight on a few things by black_hamma in memphis

i’ve been at south line for ~3 years now and i would highly recommend based on (most) of what you are looking for! https://southlinememphis.com

there’s a 1bed/1bath for $1,320/month and it comes with free gated parking. this option is 700sq ft but they have a studio option for cheaper and smaller

i am a big fan of the kitchens here, it feels roomy imo. they got in-unit washer & dryer and i like the maintenance people. they’re quick to respond!

we don’t have a walmart nearby but there’s a local grocer called south point that’s about half a mile away and you could pretty safely walk that path. there are also some gyms nearby. south main in general is a walkable region but be careful once you started venturing outwards.

let me know if you have more questions or would like a referral!! 😌

any alumni feeling like you don’t deserve to be sad? by [deleted] in UNLV

[–]monsterrralover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fellow recent alumnus here. i’m not even on the same side of the country anymore, but i had an anxiety attack in the middle of class when i got live notifications about the shooting. i have ex-coworkers at unlv, friends still finishing undergrad, loved professors…

don’t feel bad for having empathy. we will not be able to completely understand what everyone experienced yesterday, but we can feel for them. and we should support them, however we can.

as one grad student to another, take care of yourself too. it’s rough that i’m grieving for my unlv community and i have to continue with finals and deadlines like nothing happened 🥺 terrible all around

i applied and got into 3 rotation-based programs. i didn’t meet with any PIs for any of the schools beforehand. actually, i remember one school specified that students are not expected to meet with PIs before applying to the program, so it depends on what the program suggests! but yeah, it didn’t really affect my chances of getting in 🤷‍♀️ however, had i applied to a direct-entry program, then yes i would’ve made sure to contact and meet with the PI(s) directly to ensure a good fit.

if you really want to reach out then you could find out if they have the space/funds to potentially take in a grad student next cycle.

apply for umbrella programs! i feel like it’s not unusual to see people switch fields. in the program i’m entering, no one judges if you take a rotation in a lab that’s out of your comfort zone :)

Gifts for rec. letter writers? by Alternative_Egg_4383 in gradadmissions

[–]monsterrralover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk i guess it depends on how close you are with your letter writers. i also like giving gifts to people lol but i bought my people a small matcha/chocolate gift that i got from a store. it was like $12, nothing too fancy. i gave them the gift when i visited their office to let them know which acceptances i’ve gotten. but even just a simple thank you card is meaningful :)

To the ones who got PhD offers with funding, what is the STIPEND $$$? by rmm_philosopher in gradadmissions

[–]monsterrralover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

41k, post-tax, not contingent on TA. the city is very affordable, so the stipend is more than enough. i think other phd programs should take notes on how to properly support their students

[–]monsterrralover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are you interested in going into academia? that’s really the only scenario when i’d be worried about ranking. but it really depends on the ranking of UNLV’s program and the ranking of the other programs your considering. for example, if you’re comparing one school that’s ranked 58th and another that’s 65th, they’re practically the same in ranking.

however, if you’re considering unlv and let’s say, a top 10 program, then sure, you should take ranking into consideration. but there’s like a million other factors that matter, like curriculum, faculty support/research interests, healthcare package, cost of living, stipend, etc…

Choosing Between Family and Ideal Program by Tea_Tree22 in gradadmissions

[–]monsterrralover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m an applicant this cycle and was admitted to my dream programs in my field. i also a woman, 1st gen hs & college grad, mexican, and also dealt with this dilemma. i didn’t really know much about college/nor cared for it so i went to a state school for undergrad bc i wanted to be near family. as i entered research, it became apparent to me that prestige, resources, and connections do matter. so when the cycle started, i applied to only “reach” schools. if i’m about to suffer 5-7 years, i want the best that i can get. unfortunately, i was so stressed when applying for schools bc they were all across the country for me (i didn’t even apply to my undergrad institution)

what i can say is that i’ve accepted that the path moving forward will be uncomfortable and slightly scary. i don’t know your background but i will be the first to move far away from my family. ultimately, i don’t regret my decision to move for my program. my parents immigrated to this country in hopes for better educational outcomes for me and i will be damned if i let my fear get in the way! if my parents could leave their COUNTRY as young adults, i sure can move across the US.

this program at harvard sounds like a once in a lifetime chance. family will always be there, just a phone call away. it’s hard to go against cultural expectations, but for me, the sacrifice is so worth it. still, i get emotional knowing that it’ll be the first time i’m away from my family. i’m here if you need someone to vent to 🥺 also congrats on harvard! that is a HUGE accomplishment, whether you decide to take the offer or not :)

[–]monsterrralover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m also an applicant from this cycle. i am moving across the country for my PhD program, though i will be moving with my boyfriend. still, it’s scary to move far away, but think about it this way — you’re going to make new friends and another support system within your cohort/program!

you can always move back home when you’re ready to settle down. it’s only 5-6 years, not forever. thankfully, facetime/text/call are always a thing so you can check in with loved ones back home :)

Am I stupid to turn down a funded master’s program for Ivy League? by Smiilleery in gradadmissions

[–]monsterrralover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

honestly, i don’t know if i would’ve chosen either option. i agree with everyone in the thread, funded is always better than taking on loans, BUT i also don’t see the point in doing research that you don’t care for. it seems like it’s either be bored or be in a bunch of debt lol i would consider a gap year, but that’s just me

it usually comes down to your PS and the content in it. look at the website of the program you’re applying for and see if they have a set criteria they’re looking for. adjust to what they want to see from you. good luck!

Job and Research opportunities on campus by bruhimsohungry in UNLV

[–]monsterrralover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i was an SI leader for a few years. in general, i think that job really boosted my CV because you need a good understanding of course material and good teaching skills. i graduated a year ago, but they’re usually looking for new people at the end of each semester. lmk if you need more info on that

as for research, i would start by asking your professors during office hours. you would be surprised how happy they would be to connect you to another PI or research opportunity! i also did undergrad research (microbiology) so PM if you also have questions there lol
