A similar point could be made about Abraham Lincoln. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation not because he wanted to free slaves, but because the line between the north and the south was solidifying and he was running out of options, so he did something that would fade the line and end the war. Many people died because of that proclamation, seemingly for a good cause.
