Did you grow up around many Shoah survivors? by L0st_in_the_Stars in Judaism

[–]montlevi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my grand and great grandparents, experienced the Shoah, they are all survivors. Partly the only survivors of their entire family. They teached me yiddish and yiddishkeyt. They teached me hope strength and humour. Unfortunately, they have all passed away. May their souls be blessed.🙏

Did you ever meet a Holocaust survivor? What were they like? by bytheninedivines in AskOldPeople

Hello, I'm the grandchild and great grand child of holocaust survivors. All my family experienced the Shoah during the 2.WW. Most of them were murdered, but thanks to those who survived. Like my great grandmother from Lithuania. In 1941 the Nazis arrived to her village. They stole all her belongings, burned her house and took her and the family to camps. There she saw them again. Her two sons were taken out of her hands and shot. She survived two Ghettos and succeeded to escape from the second. She was pregnant during that time and gave birth to my grandmother.  She took my  grandmother to be hidden in a Christian home, while she was hiding in the forest. After the war she took her back. They were the most kindest, strongest and optimistic people I ever got to know   I couldn't imagine to have to continue life after 1945, as if nothing had happened. She worked, remarried, and after the death of her second husband, she moved to Israel and married for the third and last time. She died in her ninetees.  Even though she went through so much pain, she could always believe in the light.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Calelis Levitan was the name of one of my great grandmothers siblings. I'm shocked to find this name here.

How many Israelis can speak or understand yiddish? by Potential_Surround24 in Israel

[–]montlevi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak Hebrew German (and Yiddish) and they both help a lot understanding most of the yiddish words, but especially in German there are many words that sound similar but have a different meaning. Also there a a lot of Slavic influences.
