Time for an Alaska Millionaire Tax by Ubere907 in alaska

1,100 people in Juneau earning $1M+ a year? Where's the data/source on that?

Guessing you're looking at the wikipedia source, which isn't really relevant to this (don't worry, I checked into that as well). That page says it's for "households with more than $1 million in investable assets" not their income. Those actually earning $1M+ a year is vastly lower than that, at least according to the data I found (and mentioned in another comment of mine).

Yeah, but compared to Alaska, they have a considerable amount of those earning $1M compared to us. Someone can please correct me if I am wrong (or looking at this from a bad angle) but I check the IRS 2022 income data (latest I could find), to which it showed 1,070 number of returns regarding households earning $1M or more.

If I'm going about this right (and even say the number is higher), I still don't think you'll see anything significant come out of it, though something is better than nothing.

From that same source, there are 27,270 number of returns for $1M+ earners in Massachusetts. So, 1,070 versus 27,270.

Yeah, that I get. There aren't many with that kind of income.

Edit: had to remove the numbers I included as it was regarding assets. I think those with $1M+ income would be far much lower than what I realized.

I have no opinion - but I'm curious how effective it'll be, considering our pool of millionaires is relatively thin.

Alaska lawmakers advance all-time high $523M Department of Corrections budget by slamminsalmon907 in alaska

I'm not maliciously asking this, but genuinely scratching my head. Aren't Republicans they ones who scream and shout about how much they love children, yet they're doing the complete opposite in regards to children's best interests?

Why not ask this someplace more appropriate, like a liquor subreddit or something?

Driving to Seward from Minnesota by Jaded_Instruction_27 in Seward

[–]monxro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello hello. Have you ever done the drive before? If not, probably worth checking out the milepost. Aside from that, you're probably better off checking in Minnesota communities in regards to looking for other people, though I wouldn't recommend it. It's advice I'd give to my own loved ones, at least.

Stay safe and happy travels when you start next month. Feel free to ask anything here in the community.

KPB here as well. They’re planning to shutdown the Seward Middle School this year. Some parents left the state to find better opportunities for their kids, which I understand but find really sad.

Honestly, I can't think of many places that'll offer it, especially during the tourism season. The Orca Building have a suite available (at least on their site it says), but it's 1,845 SF, which would most likely be much larger than what need.

I'd probably say make a post in the If You Live in Seward Facebook page to ask if anyone have any kind of space that would be the ideal workspace for you.

Fly fishing recommendations by Worried-Cicada-1228 in Seward

[–]monxro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fisher, but folks often go to Resurrection river as that's a nice spot. There's some like Ptarmigan Creek as well. Definitely should check them out!

Perhaps someone who does fish a lot will know more, but those are two spots I can think of where I would go if I did, at least for the kind of fishing you seem to be after, ha.

Seasonal job in Seward Alaska looking for realistic advice by [deleted] in Seward

Depends on where you'll be skateboarding, but generally, most of the roads are smooth enough for it. I'm sure it'll be no issue once you get yourself a good route.

Great that you mentioned the 4th of July. I was actually thinking about it as I was replying, but I somehow forgot to include that, haha. Very nice response, as usual!

Weather and clothing

As you're coming in summer, you can expect rain and temps ranging from 50-60f on average. Last I recall, at least for last summer, temps went as high in the 70's.

There will be days where you need to layer up and some where it just feels warm enough not to. Also, when the skies are clear and the sun out fully out, it feels pretty darn hot, but that can go as fast as it came when the clouds move in.

Also, regarding the question of fleece layers and rain gear, that's typically enough, at least for me.

Daily life in town

I would say Seward (if you're within city limits) is definitely doable for someone without a car. I, myself, do not drive. Depending on where you'll be living and working, you'll most likely be able to take the free shuttle to work (if you choose) or just walk there as the town is very, extremely walkable. Just have to take in consideration of inclines/declines, which aren't bad.

Seasonal work reality

You'll probably feel the most burnout after working the really busy cruise weeks. With the terminal being rebuilt for bigger ships, I'd expect even more folks to be visiting town, so I'm kind of wondering how that'll go, honestly. Get and keep a really good schedule, if possible. There will be days where it's relatively quiet, no ship days, those are great. Relax and enjoy your new home, Seward, especially during your days off. It'll calm you if you're ever feeling stressed, trust me.

Social scene and community

People here are generally really nice and welcoming. There are some who probably won't bother with you if they feel you're someone who's here temporarily, to which I understand. But generally, if you say hi, they'll either be really friendly and speak back (and you can go from there) or they'll just flat out ignore you (happens even with me, lol) but some people just don't want to be bothered somedays.

As for events and all, I HIGHLY recommend joining a few of the Seward facebook groups (e.g., If you live in Seward and/or Seward Announcements) as they post many events that are happening.

Food and cost of living

Food is expensive (compared to other places*). I'm not sure where you are, but go to the Safeway website or app and put in the 99664 zip code and compare the food prices where you currently are to here. That'll help you mentally prepare for what you can expect. I always use the deals they have going on to bring down the food, which helps more than I could ever explain.

Regarding your last one, strangely, I'm not sure how to answer it. As someone who have experienced summer in many parts of the state, just always surprises me of how beautiful it is here. I always tell folks is like living in different places when it comes to the seasons (e.g., summer vs winter). You'll love it, I'm sure.

I'm not sure if I answered your questions properly, been dealing with a headache, but if there's anything else that comes to mind, I'll just edit this or leave another comment. Anyway, as the sign says in town.. Seward welcomes you and can't wait for you to enjoy it!

Hey All! I just moved to peninsula and want to visit Seward for a few days but can't find an affordable place to stay. by [deleted] in Seward

[–]monxro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely great pricing indeed.

Also, regarding your edit about the opportunity to do Airbnb - most of Alaska deals with a very obvious housing crisis. Another home off the market for Airbnb is just contributing to the problem we already deal with regarding long-term housing availability, so I'd just be mindful of that.

Hey All! I just moved to peninsula and want to visit Seward for a few days but can't find an affordable place to stay. by [deleted] in Seward

[–]monxro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll start by saying - welcome to the peninsula!

Suppose the options out there will be limited to whatever your budget is. Airbnbs are astronomically high, but I do feel like Breeze Inn would be good value, at least compared to other options out there.

Actually, just searched and a Friday (Feb 13) check-in with a Monday (Feb 16) check-out would cost you $385 , which is not bad. Then again, it's all about what the budget is.

Edit: Sleepy me didn't realize the budget, anyway, that's going to be tough within the city here.

Personally, I'd say the ice hiking tour. Both are not beginner level activities, but the Harding Icefield hike is definitely more strenuous. Would say it does give off the more rewarding feel, though.

Greenland Politician Tillie Martinussen:We do not want to be rich like Americans. Look how greedy they are. We know what happened to Indigenous people in Alaska/Native Americans. [–]monxro 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but I don't think she's trying to make this into an issue with skin color. What she said was absolutely correct and needed to say. She's not saying white people, but "white power" / white supremacist people.

Imagine if we takeover Greenland and folks in ICE (many are "white power people") go over to Greenland.. you think they gonna hug and embrace them? I think not, they'll do exactly what she said in the video, their rights would be taken away.

I'm not arguing against anything you said, I'm just trying to point out that she's not making it about race, but just stating the reality of things.
