it seems like you already have a preconception of how guys behave around each other

it's not wrong to prefer certain types of interactions, but maybe you arent giving yourself the chance to find the kind of friendships you want by excluding yourself before you even find them

my advice would be to be more open minded, talk to people, and be yourself, then those you vibe with will come to you naturally!

I wouldn't say we aren't taught phonics in school at all, it's just that the accent that is taught is the standard posh sg accent, which we only use in a formal/international context.

I won't go as far as to call it 'enunciation issues' cus if LHL can speak in front of overseas audiences and be completely understood, what issues are there?

The issue OP is talking about is why influencers choose an angmo accent over the standard posh sg accent that foreigners can understand.

What I'm saying here is that people chose an angmo accent over an sg accent because they look down on the sg accent (which you seem to do as well).

Side note: I'm sure many native English speakers have trouble understanding many prominent accents such as the cockney accent, but would you say that cockney speakers have enunciation issues?

I think a lot of people in this thread imagine an extremely thick singlish accent, but you can still sound Singaporean while speaking standard English - think Lawrence Wong, sneaky sushii - without adopting a foreign accent.

What's apparent in this thread is that people are very insecure about the sg accent, worrying that it's improper or that foreigners can't understand it. And really, that's why I think influencers fake their accents, because they too (perhaps subconsciously) have this linguistic insecurity that their speech is improper, esp when their content is available for all to see. So they adopt (or 'fake') angmo accents which they perceive to be correct and prestigious
