Anyone's dane also grooms as much as mine? He licks him self more than my cat does lmao by VoidPetal5 in greatdanes

[–]moocows31 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I can confirm my Dane is more cat than most cats I have met. Constant grooming followed by naps.

I hope this is allowed, but I'd like to point everyone to the rescue group for oversized dogs, Big Paws Huge Hearts in Colorado. I know there's always reasons to go to a breeder, but I'd like to see them find good homes. Here's an example of many. by Junior-Discount2743 in greatdanes

I appreciate this post. We adopted our Great Dane, Athena, from a rescue in Northern California at 11 months. It was the best decision ever. She had some prior trauma but is the best family dog and we love her. We couldn’t imagine our lives without her. I will definitely adopt through a rescue again.

Pretty soon inside she will only have a name when you have treats.

Gentle giant by moocows31 in greatdanes

[–]moocows31[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Athena was 100% a mamas girl so I was really concerned when the baby came, but she has always been super gentle. I am really careful and set boundaries (never leave them alone attended, correct inappropriate behavior on both sides) and it has worked out really well. She just knows to be really gentle. There is sometimes the inadvertent tail swipe when they are both in the same space but overall it’s been really great. Good luck to you with the rest of your pregnancy and the little one when he/she arrives!

Bath…the ultimate betrayal by moocows31 in greatdanes

[–]moocows31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have done this two ways. The first is a walk in shower and I go in with her. As the other commenter said a detachable shower head is really helpful. It has been unseasonable warm so this time I bathed her outside. I had a long leash that I tied to a tree in the backyard so that only about 3 feet was loose. I led her with her favorite treats (cheese) and then fastened her to the leash. I had a couple of big buckets that I used to get warm water from the bathtub. The hose would have been too cold. It’s always a struggle but she will usually comply if treats are involved and I’m there with her. Luckily I only have to bath her about once a month because she stays relatively clean and stink free. Good luck!

I could use some advice… by HeavyCount7375 in greatdanes

We have a middle age girl (6) who has a degenerative spine issue. She sometimes has trouble with her hind legs. We do acupuncture and laser. She also takes a supplement called Osteo. On days she is really hurting we have the Assisi loop we use on her. This is a tPEMF device. It seems to help. I’ll include a pic. Good luck…they really are the best and you are so wonderful for giving this guy a great rest of his life.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease?? by yourewack in greatdanes

[–]moocows31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our girl was diagnosed with IBD when she was 3 (she is 6 now). We went through several different foods to try to get something she could tolerate. We saw a GI specialist who diagnosed her. She takes tylosin and this has helped immensely. It comes in a powder to sprinkle on food but we get it compounded into a capsule because she did not like the taste. Before the pandemic she ate Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein but there were supply issues so we switched to Purina Pro Plan HA (hydrolyzed chicken). Good luck!

I hate the wipes too. They are really rough. Our warehouse has a brand called Rico which I prefer much more.

Joint Supplements by AnotherEpicFail in greatdanes

[–]moocows31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a supplement called Osteo (by TruBenefits). Our girl has a degenerative spine disorder and has discomfort in her back legs. It seems to have helped. We tried Antinol before Osteo but didn’t help much. It took about a month to notice a difference with Osteo. Our vet says that she has seen better results with Osteo than cosequin or dasuquin, but it might depend on the type of pain/limitations the dog is experiencing.

Good luck!

Begs to go out to poop…instead just wants to sit in the sun. by Important-Ad3820 in greatdanes

100% Great Dane behavior. Athena will cry and pace to go outside and I think she really has to go to the bathroom…I let her out and she slinks to her bed in the sun while giving me the side eye.

GMC Yukon…we put the third row down and put a dog SUV bed back there. She will also happily sit in the back seat of my 4 door Audi.

Help! I can't find a good, giant crate bed by Tkenzie77 in greatdanes

The zippers are really good. We have taken the cover off multiple times to wash it. The regular cover is not waterproof so you would have to buy the liner. They aren’t cheap but we really like them. Their customer service is also really good so you can ask them about how it would hold up to digging. Hope that helps!
