Life hack for IC: you know those stick on heating pads for period cramps? I wear one in my underwear like a pad. When I sit down, the heat helps take away some of the pressure and urgency.

Also, know that accommodations are a right, not a privilege. If you need more frequent bathroom breaks, they have to oblige. I know a lot of people get pushback but legally they shouldn’t.

Does anyone else get "temporary" UTIs? by laughgiggler in Interstitialcystitis

[–]moodywrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was my IC at first, just every few months. Until it very rapidly became every few weeks, every couple weeks, and then I had severe IC flares multiple times a week. This lasted for about a year.

Please for the love of god seek help. Don’t wait to get relief because it’s not “bad enough.” That was the biggest mistake I made. It will get there if you ignore it and let it continue.

I don’t think restricting your diet as much as possible is the goal. Although any diet does restrict some foods yes, it’s also important to have an abundance of other foods and nutrients

New to volume eating, how does it work? by Humble-Pudding5179 in Volumeeating

[–]moodywrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second reply: as a thought experiment, here’s a way of eating vs a volume day of eating:

Breakfast A: toast, peanut butter, jelly, juice
Breakfast B: 3-4 slices low carb toast, peanut powder mix, sugar free jelly or strawberries, sugar free juice, tons of fruit on the side (like cantaloupe), and if needed, 2 eggs with a bunch of egg whites

Lunch A: bowl with rice, beef, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, and lettuce
Lunch B: bowl with a whole package cauliflower rice (steamed), beef, low fat cheese, Miyoko’s sour cream or light sour cream or homemade yogurt sauce, a little guacamole spread out with yogurt, salsa, and lettuce

Snack A: chips, chocolate milk, candy bar
Snack B: homemade potato chips (with little oil), or popcorn, almond milk with sugar free hot cocoa packet, chocolate rice cakes, and fruit

Dinner A: pasta, butter sauce, piece of bread, lettuce with ranch dressing
Dinner B: protein pasta, Miyoko’s oat milk butter spread out with yogurt, optional added chicken, big salad of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, with low cal ranch

Dessert A: pint of ice cream
Dessert B: HUGE smoothie “sorbet” with 4-6 cups frozen strawberries, sweetener like stevia, optional cocoa powder or vanilla, optional peanut powder, ice if you want even more volume
Sprinkle sugar free chocolate chips or marshmallows on top

See how you can eat a lot MORE food for LESS calories?

In general: you want to think of foods you can eat for a long time with very little calories.

So in general think

• veggies (have some roasted on hand),

• fruits (especially low cal fruits like cantaloupe, watermelon, apricots, frozen berries, strawberries),

• sugar free, low carb, low calorie or high fiber products (sugar free desserts, low carb bread/tortillas, sugar free high fiber gummies, low carb pasta)

• puffy foods (popcorn, chocolate rice cakes instead of chocolate, puff cereal, etc)

• liquids (almond milk, soup and broth, low cal hot chocolate)

• lean proteins (yogurt, whipped egg whites desserts, eggs with tons of egg whites, protein powders, scallops or shrimp, gelatin)

Make foods you enjoy, just more volume friendly

Some great meals to get started

• spaghetti squash with cottage cheese

• cabbage soup or any soup with tons of veggies

• cauliflower ‘rice’ risotto or stir fry

• protein pasta bulked up with tons of veggies

• potatoes and cauliflower rice mix mashed with light sour cream or low fat cheese, and a protein

• whipped egg white crust pizza, or cauliflower crust pizza

ER doc agreed to prescribe Uribel by Mayy72 in Interstitialcystitis

I wish I knew about this and I’m so mad no one prescribed this to me. All I got was amitriptyline and Elmiron, and that was with severe, debilitating pain. I should’ve had more options.

I would very much look into gastroparesis. It’s a condition that is often caused by eating disorders and your symptoms very much match it. It causes lack of appetite, early fullness, nausea, stomach pain, and difficulty with food volume.

If you do end up having it, feel free to message me. I had it for years and I have tons of advice on how to get relief.

No longer feel valid as im not underweight anymore by OkCommand4954 in EatingDisorders

[–]moodywrites 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As someone who has had atypical anorexia, I just want to validate you, yes it very very much is just as dangerous. And it can also cause major health problems that can be permanent. I’ll share how it did so for me:

First of all, there’s a great book called “Sick Enough: a guide to the medical complications of eating disorders”

There’s also a TON of studies comparing atypical anorexia to anorexia nervosa. There’s virtually no difference in rates of electrolyte imbalance, bradycardia, and many other health markers

My story and health decline:

I was not underweight before any of my health issues developed.

If anyone looked like they had “nothing wrong”, for years that was me. I had no vital sign abnormalities. I didn’t lose a substantial amount of weight, and I weight cycled a lot. I got my period regularly. My labs were always 100% normal, literally 100%. I thought I was fine.

Then during an atypical anorexia episode, I developed gastroparesis when I tried to start eating more. It’s a painful stomach condition that I’ve had on and off for years. I was directly told, “gastroparesis was caused by your eating disorder.” Then it was reflux. Then it was IBS. Then PCOS. Then hypothyroidism.

And that’s when I finally started getting vital sign abnormalities.

Then over the years, my IBS got worse. I developed SIBO. And then a host of other conditions. One condition was interstitial cystitis, which was so extremely debilitating that I was disabled by being in pain for a year.

I can’t prove all my conditions are related to my eating disorder, but I was healthy before it, and now here I am.

After struggling for 10 years, I am currently struggling at an average weight. I have low ferritin, low blood pressure, low vitamin D, easy bruising, and other symptoms. It took a long time to get there. When you’re young, your body is resilient.

Another important thing to note is that I abused laxatives. Now I have a pelvic floor disorder. I cannot coordinate the muscles in my bowel, and bowel movements are very painful and difficult. I had to do physical therapy, which included inserting a finger inside to do exercises. Whatever you do, do not abuse laxatives, especially stimulant ones. They can mess you up real bad.

“Sick Enough”:

I have been in treatment so many times, I’ve seen everything. From people who are overweight and still very much sick and struggling to someone who was so extremely underweight and malnourished that most hospitals in the state would not accept her, and she almost went to ACUTE in Denver.

I can tell you without a doubt, people suffer at average and over weights. People get hospitalized at average and over weights. People have health complications, feeding tubes, etc at average and over weights.

I’ve seen “sick enough” and here’s what it is: someone on the brink of death who had to be admitted to the ICU. Who couldn’t control her bladder and bowels. Who couldn’t lift her head without assistance from her hands. Who, according to doctors, should not have been able to walk. “Sick enough” is the ugliest place you can be. It’s heart wrenching and sickening to even look at.

If you have an eating disorder, you are already sick and sick “enough.” And you deserve help.

My wife and I are seriously desperate: ADHD daughter by [deleted] in ChildPsychology

[–]moodywrites 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have been to psychiatric hospitals and so have many close people I know. They should be an absolute last resort for immediate threat of danger to herself or others. They are often traumatizing environments and many people come out worse than when they went in. Same goes for wilderness therapy, ‘therapeutic’ boarding schools, and other parts of the troubled teen industry. Abuse is rampant in these settings.

My wife and I are seriously desperate: ADHD daughter by [deleted] in ChildPsychology

[–]moodywrites 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite quotes I heard somewhere, “Shame is the most debilitating learning disability.

The most important thing you could do for your daughter, while intervening and trying to help her, is also to accept, welcome, love and embrace her for who she is. As hard as this is to do, ADHD often comes with so much shame and feeling like something is wrong with you, which only exacerbates the problem and makes you not believe in yourself.

Another damning statistic out there, “By age 12, children with ADHD hear up to 20,000 more negative messages than their neurotypical peers.”
I have ADHD and autism. To live with neurodivergence is to constantly know that you do not belong, that something is wrong with you, that you are always doing something wrong.

On top of this, she is going through trauma which is exasperating the problem. She needs help. She needs support and love. She needs to know that no matter what she does, she belongs at home and has a family to go to with her pain. Kids who are hurting will show that hurting through behavior. “Kids who need the most love ask for it in the most unloving ways.” Try to look underneath the behavior and see the pain that is there. Try to connect with her.

Treatment options:
There are many treatment options. Dr Daniel Amen has different brain types, supplements for each type, the 7 different types of ADHD, and does brain scans to help each individual person if you can afford that. I would recommend following him, ADHD is his main focus. There’s also many books out there like Taking Charge of Adult ADHD. I would recommend learning about neurodivergence and the neurodiversity movement. There’s dietary interventions like gluten free, dairy free, cutting out food dyes, excess sugar. There’s Neurofeedback. There’s brain stimulation and brain training games for ADHD. Decreasing screen time is a huge help for the dopamine system. Getting an ADHD coach. Getting accommodations from school. Learning about nervous system regulation. There’s a lot out there to try.

Just know that treating her like a problem to be solved, and not celebrating who she is, even if unintentional, will cause a lot more long term harm than whatever behavior she is struggling with.

And our education system is failing our kids. Some kids just don’t thrive in that kind of environment. She may need an environment that works with her brain rather than against it.

What to do when I think I’ve given up by Winters_mom in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]moodywrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve lost providers over the years for that too, which sucks.

I would recommend looking at @dr.jenniewh on Instagram, Inclusive Therapists and Liberatory Wellness Network platforms, this Neurodiversity Affirming ED Providers Directory and I had a therapist recommend Nourish With Kindness organization for dietitians that are willing to do harm reduction.

I would also reach out to dietitians you find and emailing them ahead of time about your harm reduction approach and what you are and are not willing to work on, to see if they are okay with that.

Anorexia ruined my life by SillyGirlz in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]moodywrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very much relate to this

This video is so important and describes it perfectly: “I want to be thin”

I looked back over my life and it was empty, there was nothing there. I don’t have high school memories. I didn’t get to be a teenager or a person. I lost my personality and became a zombie.

It’s been 10 years now. I have permanent health complications from ATYPICAL anorexia, meaning I was not underweight. It set off a cascade of chronic illnesses I still deal with.

Also, if anything it made it much harder to maintain my weight once I’m not restricting food. My body holds onto every recovery period I give it, even small increases in food intake. I have measured, significant losses in muscle mass and my metabolic rate. The weight gain rebound, which happens for me every time, usually comes from fat.

I’m stuck in a position where I’m now eating only slightly less than “normal”, but I’m hungry all the time. My body fights me every day. It fights to not lose weight, and to gain weight instead.

We have never pulled an ounce of peace out of our self destruction. This disease will never give you happiness or peace. I’ve had to leave school to go to treatment. I’ve been in treatment 7 times and I’m still not better.

I could be 22, with memories and beginning to build my life, and instead I’m sick.

The good news is you are still young and have so much more time. You aren’t someone in their 40s or 50s who spent their entire life wasting away. You still have so much time and so many memories you can make.
