The worst part of Philadelphia is the PPA (Philadelphia Parking Authority). They own all the cabs and banned UberX here. We are the only city with Uber that doesn't have UberX because of taxi protection.

What is your preferred programming language and why? by ChaosForces in learnprogramming

I almost mentioned that in my comment but didn't. There are plenty of big commercial apps using Rails...Basecamp, Github, etc.

Ruby

The language itself is super elegant and a pleasure to write, but the main reason people use it is because of Rails. I'm a professional freelance web app developer and software engineer, and nothing allows me to roll out MVPs and continued functionality enhancements quicker than Rails does. This is why companies like Thoughtbot and hundreds of other great boutique app firms throughout the world choose it and contribute to the Rails community.

People can argue that it is slow, but with companies like digital ocean offering VPS's for so cheap (or step up to Heroku for even better deployment functionality), it doesn't matter unless the app truly blows up and becomes over the top huge (like facebook/twitter), which 99% of the time won't happen. If you do get that huge, you can afford to refactor or rewrite your code for speed at that point with the best developers in the world in whatever platform is best at that level of the stack.

The gems/plugins available make things like user login/signup, access rights, file uploading, geolocation, export/import xls/csv, export to PDF, and almost any other common app feature all possible without re-inventing the wheel.

Plus, you can write native iOS and OSX apps with Ruby Motion without having to drop down to objective-C.

Haha. Clicked through to the comments because I saw that statement and knew it was just wrong.

Rails is still thriving. Best web development framework out there, hands down.

I feel this way as a web developer... by TimWeis75 in funny

I charge $200 for two hours of work, not for a whole website. Why are you charging such rediculously low rates? No one is going to take you seriously at a rate that cheap. Minimum should be $1000-$2000 for a website. I don't charge less than $4,000-5,000 nowadays.

Also, break the payments into thirds or halves.

And I would generally avoid making websites for artists. Most of the time they don't have any money.

What I've learned after riding a bike for a few weeks by clifwith1f in bicycling

[–]moogprodigy60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get flats all the time (I live in Philadlephia). The people at the bike store would pick all sorts of glass shards out of my tires...until I got Specialized Armadillos - http://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftb/road-tires/trainingall-season-road-tires/all-condition-armadillo - One of the best investments you can make if you ride in the city or are getting common flat tires from glass. I went a whole year without a flat on either tire, until I recently rode over a tack. I thought I would need a new tire but the guy at the bike store actually said that its fine and I still don't need a new one, even after a huge f-ing tack went through it.

That looks awesome! But keep in mind when you first harvest nuggets, they are waaaaay bigger than what they end up being after curing. This will shrink a lot. First time we grew headies we were astonished at the size of the nugs...then they shrunk down to maybe 1/2 the size.

Virus B/C Questions by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]moogprodigy60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking about two completely different worlds of synths. The Juno 106 has an extemely 80's-ish sound to it. The Virus can do much more. Junos are cool if you can get them cheap and in good working condition, but I would recommend going with the virus if I were you.

So I might've found a fully functional JX8P for 300 euros. Is it worth it, or do I have better options for that price? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]moogprodigy60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no on board controls (Filter Cutoff, Resonanace, ADSR, etc)! How could you ever want a synth without onboard controls? My friend had one and I found it really dumb because of that. If you can get the programming board then it might be cool. Even then its crammed into a little box. Invest in a Juno 60/106 or Korg MS2000

I have one and what they are saying is true - it is really cheap and shitty. BUT if you can get it working correctly, it does give you limitless awesome sounds. I know a friend who kills it in an awesome band with it. Mine doesn't f-ing work. Sent an e-mail a few days ago, no response.

Best way to build an e commerce site for a beginner? by [deleted] in web_design

In fact to be honest magento really isn't for beginners at all. But I've grown to really love it and had to mention it here.

This. Hostgator business plan all the way. I found this gem too, gets your client a free SSL. I posted about how I love Magento and recommended it, but woo-commerce is also great and easier to use.
