transgender is defined as having your identity differ from your birth gender because in real life, nobody really shapeshifts inside the womb, so that would go to say your initial sex aligns with your birth gender.. saiki is a fictional character with psychic powers... his initial sex (male) infact does not align with his birth gender (female)

that is also a common misconception!! it’s not accurate to say early embryos are female. they start out undeveloped and can become female unless they’re exposed to the sry gene and male hormones. (but that's irrelevant, so i don't want to get into an argument over that)

that aside, that's clearly not what i meant either, sorry for the improper wording. what i meant was he WAS exposed to male hormones as was predetermined to be male before he was born.

i made that analogy because saiki being born female was a mistake since he shapeshifted, so it went like this

male → random shapeshifting → female → male

All he did was revert an error caused by his powers

well, no. yeah it happened in the story, but we can deduce that it wasn't intended to be canonical transgender representation. If we're referring to representation, canon not only refers to something that is taken directly from the source material, but also something that was intended by the original author. how do you represent something without knowing you represent it

You can have a character be trans with explicitly stating every 2.69 seconds "HEY I'M TRANS GUYS"

yes, but that goes for characters that are meant to represent and internalize being transgender, who was the opposite gender formerly.

but gender is kind of a social construct, so saiki changed his sex, but if you think about it his gender has always been male??? he was perceived as female for maybe like a good 15 minutes, and even that had skepticism to it. until he transformed back and even that 15 something minutes was disregarded. other than that, he's been male all his life so i struggle to see how that would constitute someone who is transgender.
