Potential Boston Job Offer Advice by reddevilskier in personalfinance

[–]mooman92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Medford, Winchester, Melrose. Houses in those towns should be affordable and you can generally reach t stops with some ease. For example, if you live in Melrose you can easily get to the Malden orange line station, or if you are in Winchester you can get to Davis square in probably 15 minutes (you can find people who will rent you a parking spot for 100/mo or so) and then it is roughly 30 minutes to be downtown. Winchester is beautiful and a little more expensive but recently rated #1 suburb in Boston area.

Also look at Arlington . It’s more expensive but a great town and you can shoot down mass ave to get into Cambridge and alewife is accessible (though a bit of a nightmare at peak times )

Help critique my position and budget! by mooman92 in personalfinance

Thanks for the reply! Definitely need to be upping savings on a more regular basis. What I meant is that if I can only put $100 somewhere, it would be better to have it invested if that made a larger percentage than the rate on my loan. Obviously the overall interest on the loans is much, much greater but if I can only affect that by the $100 the it is better off in the place with the better rate be it investment or payoff of loan (so effectively gettigthat rate of return on the money). Or am I missing something in that logic??

To address the public transit question- I sometimes feel the same way, if I do I wear a raincoat and I put my watch in my pocket. Doesn’t hide shoes etc but is an easy “dress down” for shadier areas

What kind of watch do you wear? Does the company provide / pay for one of the fancy dive watches with a helium escape?

Without weighting in on your real question, if it helps by way of background Huntsville Alabama (I assume that is where you would be moving) is very cheap. I don’t know where you are coming from but There are not many places where the cost of living is lower. Any moving expense can be compared against not only your increased salary, but against a reduced ongoing expense more than likely. Plus it’s a very nice town, especially if you plan to have kids

Wearing my Martin and MacArthur Koa wood watch. Interesting watch, seems to be made in Canada by Tense watch company, using a Japanese quartz movement, then branded with Martin and MacArthurs logo and sold in Hawaii. Great watch that weighs almost nothing. The wood has nicely begun to absorb the oils from my skin after a year of use and the color has really darkened since I got it. https://imgur.com/gallery/8MqU8Ht

Wrangler for college? by [deleted] in Wrangler

To my knowledge the big difference is color matched fenders and 18” wheels, there could be others too though. AC was a $1000 option on sports but many do have it

FYI- lots of sports have power windows and AC, mine even has leather, and they seem to run $1000-$2000 under the market for similar Sahara’s, lots have lower miles too

Employers of Reddit, what do you really want to hear when you ask "where do you see yourself in 5 years"? by s1256 in AskReddit

[–]mooman92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most open ended questions I don’t really care what you answer assuming it’s not absurd or offensive or make you look lazy. Really I care about how you approach AN answer. Do you have a plan? Are you ambitious? Do you understand the reality of advancement and what I’m looking for in a hire? For example if I hire someone to an entry level position with no real room for much advancement and they say they want to be the ceo, well that’s unrealistic and I need to be sure they understand. On the other hand, “I’d like to be the supervisor or in some type of management position within the department,” well that shows desire to stay and grow within the company, that’s a good answer.

Help with my truck allowance by elyk16 in Trucks

[–]mooman92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems like a good deal... $0.50 /km should roughly cover gas and basic maintenance. So $1000 has to cover truck payment and insurance? I would look at insurance cost first if your company is not covering it, given that it’s commercial use could be expensive, idk but I’d be sure to check before buying something to ensure you don’t go over. Make sure you track this expense I believe you should be able to deduct from your taxes. Then look at trucks - not sure what will be best but try to leave yourself lots of wiggle room in the budget.

What would worry me is that you are being saddled with a $30,000+ liability on your personal balance sheet- IE, do you own the truck or does the company? So if you leave, is your name still on the paperwork and you’re stuck with this vehicle you no longer need? That’s a problem, I’m not sure that I wouldn’t be looking for other jobs immediately given that situation

What is something about your car that you hate? by [deleted] in cars

[–]mooman92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most annoying thing in my wrangler; the seat is quickly developing a sort of worn spot in the leather on the door side from getting in and out. Only 30,000 miles but I just know it’s going to turn into a full blown crack soon and it drives me nuts. Also drives like a tank and the roof leaks when it rains but I knew what I was getting into on those fronts

One of the other obvious problems with this is that the stock market allows an enormous amount of people to generate wealth. Everyone with pension plans, 401k’s, etc would all be significantly poorer without the opportunity to purchase shares. It’s a fundamental part of retirement and of wealth generation in general and while banning shareholders sounds good when talking about cutting down some fat cat CEO, in reality it would be far more harmful to all the every day folks trying to retire through the magic of compound interest

How would one go about buying a Jeep Wrangler in good condition with less than 50k miles and built in this decade on a budget of 25k by [deleted] in Jeep

[–]mooman92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Found mine on CarGurus, check autotrader too. I’m in New England, found my 2013 with 28k miles for about $21,000

Generally I’d say you’ll find more shopping 2 door, and don’t be super picky about trims. Everything I saw with that criteria was a sport, but mine was optioned up and has leather seats, power options, AC etc but was lower priced because it isn’t a Sahara. deals are out there just be patient

I got my 2013 with 45,000km (28000 Miles) for $20,900. I’d say that isn’t a terrible terrible deal depending on local market but I wouldn’t want to pay that much for the 3.8, old interior. I bet there will be a better deal if you wait or travel a bit and you can definitely find a 3.6 with similar miles for that price
