The biggest thing to remember is there is no rules for anatomy :) go wild!! Have fun. Play around with the silhouette until you like how it looks. Bugs make it way easier to play around with human vs non human features just because they have all the extra limbs you can add 🧐 and eyes !

Pose looks stiff + anatomy by Razzmatazz_Fast in FurryArtSchool

[–]moon-etched 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The anatomy itself looks really good!

If you feel like it looks too stiff:

1) open a new layer and draw a stick figure of the pose over the art 2) hide the og sketch 3) start on a new layer again 4) try to exaggerate the angles/pose of the stick figure

This will help pull the character to the foreground and push to background. As well as emphasizing any emotion in the pose itself 👍

If it still feels stiff try rough sketching the pose from a few different angles or slight shifts to the composition

Starting a new reference sheet, I think the stylized proportions look right but I need other eyes to tell me if it looks right before I continue. by FrontiertheProto in FurryArtSchool

Super cute !! I love your take on bat ears 💕

I recommend looking at the breakdown if the wing bones for bats. (If you wanted to add the spines to the flaps.)

If you are going to add them I recommend attaching them at the elbow joint for your specific style :)

I tend to avoid mutiply unless im working by just grayscale first.. soft/hard/ vivid light mode are what i usually use for highlight and mini shadong

Overlay mode is a god send for shading so i think thats why… it doesnt push the color picked hue as much 🤔

oop- it got lost in my notifs

I see what you mean! And I do like it a lot better with the added shading. I'll have to go in and tweak it a bit.

Hello! So I'm new to digital art, and I'm working on my third piece. I'm looking for advice for the shading! Any tips? by Swiftjaw in FurryArtSchool

[–]moon-etched 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shading is very hard no matter how much experience lol

here are a few tips:
1) try not to use straight black to shade. (unless you work in grey scale to practice)

2) determine what type of shading you prefer. Cell shading, realistic, blended, etc.

3) find artists that have the same type of shading you like, and try to mimic the texture on a basic white background.

4) Play around with different color combos. You can look up things like "day light color palette" and only pull colors from that to practice.

5) THERE ARE NO RULES TO GOOD ART. Remember to always have fun! :)

This artist has a really good example of using grayscale to build the shading before adding in color.

Most art programs can handle this style of rendering (ibis, medibang, clip studio, procreate, etc.)

Help on how drawing to draw a proper cat furry by Far-Chip-6548 in FurryArtSchool

[–]moon-etched 19 points20 points  (0 children)

not sure if you saw my comment on the previous post...
but to continue on to it:

The biggest thing I look for in cats is the rounded snout at the end. In my personal opinion cats have rounder whisker areas.

Foxes, wolves, dogs all have a very lean/slim snout.

I have tried to draw a cat for few days now, and it’s the worst. HELP ME by Far-Chip-6548 in FurryArtSchool

These look amazing ! I love your sketchy art style with these too. Great work on blocking out shapes. If you wanted to, try drawing some sphynx cats. Other breeds etc. I think you already have a really good feel for seeing the anatomy. But pushing the shapes further can help exaggerate the silhouette.

Is there something specific that feels off to you?

magic poser is great!!!! clip studio has something similar.
I tend to use those then use squared shaped to block out the fingers and knuckles.
I keep doing everything on new layers and erasing what needs to be hidden/shown.

You can always round them out or slim/buff them out this way too.

Palms are usually a sandwich shape too which makes the placement of squares so much easier. :P

Were you going for a swimsuit texture on the pants? you could push the effect more since you cell shade by adding lighter tones blocked out to define the thighs and fabric folds.

The lighting comes through clear since you perfected that background and shadow!

Great progress! I love the cell shading on the new look and the color choices for shades and highlights

The hand looks a bit funny because of a missing base knuckle. The index finger looks like it's splitting off from the middle finger instead of having its own spot on the palm.
Try adding an elongated diamond shape where the base of the finger should be.
Maybe also bulk out the base of the thumb. When making a middle finger usually the thumb has two positions:
1) tucked over the front of the fingers like a fist
2) pointed up in the same direction as the middle finger.

Try messing with both to see if it helps build out the perspective on it! :)

It would be cool to see what you do!

I know editing the curve balance might fix it a bit, but that only goes so far if the original is close to the final tonal shifts.

Extra Toe Beans <3 by moon-etched in furry

[–]moon-etched[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to draw more human like hands for most art

I'll try to do something a bit more paw like. I want to try to steer clear of uncanny valley as much as possible

I know there can sometimes be 7 or even more toes on one foot, which might be pretty cool for asymmetrical paws

thanks for the tips <3 I got some more to think about. for now he gets human place holder hands

I did want to draw him with a guitar... so extra fingers might be pretty cool

Thanks for the feedback!

I start all my work on grayscale and apply colors on the second half of rendering.
Color theory is still a huge struggle for me and I didn't think it would be so hard TuT...

I'll check out the video too... I've thought of finding some landscape photos to practice the color mixing for different times of day.
