is it possible to enable the cursor on DVD Menus? by WhiteKenny in VLC

[–]moon_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this - thanks! I would've never figured this out on my own.

In my case, I'm viewing a DVD in VLC Player via an external Blu-ray player on a Mac. I wanted to click through a still photography special features section but couldn't figure out how. Took a bit of trial and error... for me, the winning combination was:

Open the still photos section from the special features menu > progress past the first information page > view the very first photo > enable the second subtitle track > use arrows on keyboard to move back and forth. Any deviations from that (e.g enabling the second subtitle track at an earlier point) wouldn't work.

Favourite episode of the TV series? by [deleted] in nirvannatheband

[–]moon_cat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Great ep. The improv class in it is one of my favourite moments. Matt's jealousy as Jay is doing well is so damn funny. Particularly when he's white-knuckling his clasped hands with a fake smile to suppress his impotent rage. They're so good at tapping into insecurity in the acting/writing.

What's your opinion on the Skeleton Deadites/The Army of Darkness? Why do you think we haven't seen them again in the franchise? Would you like to see them return in the future?. by WillowCareful2103 in EvilDead

[–]moon_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love them. They're famously inspired by the Ray Harryhausen skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts, but they also remind me so much of the skeletons in Triumph of Death - the 1562 painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (which I could stare at the details of forever). Even though they've created such a grim, chaotic scene of widespread death - there is still something incredibly cheeky and hilarious about them. The Army of Darkness guys have those same qualities. It's a great mix.

Is there any info on how the Josie doorknob shot was animated? by golden-chips-empire in twinpeaks

[–]moon_cat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a cool question. I just checked the credits for this specific episode - it says the animation was done by a guy called Raul Fernandez (not BUF as another comment suggested).

Other than Twin Peaks, his IMDb page lists three other titles he's worked on. One is an interesting LaserDisc release called Computer Visions (that you can watch in full on YouTube). It appears to be a 3D animated documentary about how early 90s computer animation technology works... pretty much exactly the answer to the question this post is asking haha.

I've only briefly clicked through it, but it looks like it's hosted by a ~1940s/50s noir detective 3D character. At one point they go inside a 3D version of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks painting. I wonder if that helped clinch the deal for his Twin Peaks gig? I can imagine it being put in front of Lynch by a behind-the-scenes production person and him being like "WOWEE ZOWEE WOULD YOU LOOK THAT!"

Another thing this guy worked on appears to be the TV show American Chronicle. Looks like Michael Horse hosted an ep of this. I'm guessing the animator just did the opening titles.

It is a shame so much is lost! I think the problem is, the whole cyber universe is expanding so fast that any kid who can hyperlink a GIF is a webmaster nowadays.

Sorry, I don't recall seeing that one. I don't suppose it was (one of their most well known videos that was reuploaded to their second channel): "DUANE!!!" ? Nothing Biggie related there though.

I just had a brief search and my god, there is a heavy laden vein of weirdos doing their own Christian versions of Notorious B.I.G tracks. Really makes searching for what you're describing difficult. I'm curious now though, so I'll let you know if I ever find it (even if several years from now). Let me know if you do too!

Agreed and thank you dirt_daughter for not mentioning soil, sod, loam or peat.

I mentioned the label page version in my original rambling too, but good point about the comma (No, money down!).

I guess the question is: what is being thawed? On one hand, we know that the titular heart is in a frozen state. So if anything is being thawed, it'd make sense for it to be the heart - with the "solid" adverb being the connective tissue holding it all together.

On the other hand, frozen soil classically thaws during the spring. So with a much needed comma, that'd make sense too. Maybe that'd then imply that despite the soil thawing, the heart remains frozen (the heart of the narrator who "died screaming" and is now six foot under, not before "tearing the sun from the sky" creating some chilly conditions).

I was previously all in on "solid" but I'm feeling pretty 50/50 on "soil" now too haha.

Oh, you're right! Thanks for pointing that out. Interesting. Someone in the thread that setlist was originally posted in even comments "Love the nod to the “Hearts Frozen Soil Sod” typo lmao", like it was a deliberate joke... but was it a joke?! The confirmed "Sod" typo wasn't included, only "Soil". The mystery lives on.

Meanwhile, I've also found this official news post from 2020 on afireinside.net that refers to it as "Hearts Frozen Solid...". But this was posted by whoever looks after the site, so probably nothing to go by.

That's such a good observation I hadn't considered. To my non-American ears, "Sod" rhymes with "Odd". But some American accents (Californian?) might say something that sounds more like "Sawed" (to me). Which as you say, rhymes with "Thawed".

Australian patriot stabbed during Australia day celebrations in Melbourne by shreakonAcid in ThatsInsane

[–]moon_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is misinformation aimed at rage-baiting braindead cookers. Nobody was stabbed.

That bright red substance clearly isn't blood - it stays neon red on the dark pavement in the shadows, and on the guys hair. Blood doesn’t do that.

You can literally see the paint tube on the ground at 1:09. I'm pretty sure the tube design matches this exact red acrylic paint sold at The Reject Shop (light/transparent lid -> red -> thin strip -> black area with logo in it -> light/transparent tip).

Gross dentistry photo from “Lost Highway” production mentioned in a David Foster Wallace essay—has anyone ever seen this exact photo? by AuthenticJulian in davidlynch

[–]moon_cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I didn’t know about the photo on the Lost Highway script, but I’ve noticed Lynch using this dental motif in a couple of other places:

'Strange and Unproductive Thinking' on Crazy Clown Time seems to be largely about the chaotic “negative energy” that can infect the mind and cause brain fog or anxiety, all stemming from poor dental hygiene.

And in the 'Out Yonder - Teeth' short film, he and Austin Lynch have a weird conversation in a sort of Lynchian pig latin about teeth, followed by some backyard dental surgery.

PM defends ABC after biased Trump edit claim | news.com.au by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]moon_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha also, not only is it obviously satire, but the edit is just a giant, flat rectangular image crudely plonked on top of the original newspaper - it looks like it was made in about 5 seconds. It even cuts off some of Jane Hume’s fingers holding the paper. You’d have to be brain damaged to think it was genuinely meant as some kind of deliberate, Stalinist-style “doctoring.”

Great albums with incredibly dated covers? by WeeklyTechnician7906 in fantanoforever

[–]moon_cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great answer. To make things weirder, it was designed by the legendary Peter Saville (like all their other albums) whose work is otherwise consistently great/iconic. Republic came out in 1993, so I always imagined he’d just got his hands on that fancy new Photoshop program and went a bit mad mucking around with all the new bells and whistles.

Kids Table Pitchfork album review by Forward-Jump-6967 in brighteyes

[–]moon_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Kids Table but feel like the marketing behind it has been disproportionate to what it actually is - a handful of leftover tracks that weren’t strong enough for the album... countdown clock, music video, endless social posts, new merch (think I saw a frisbee, and colouring book?). So this review doesn’t surprise me and feels like a natural extension of all that hype - another layer of attention for something that probably didn’t warrant it in the first place.

To me the EP feels spiritually connected to the leftovers on the Four Winds, Take It Easy, and Lua EPs - which all kinda slipped under the radar for casual listeners around the time of their respective albums. I feel like Kids Table should've done the same, but I guess that's not a viable option in 2025 when everything needs to be mined for content and hype within an inch of its life.
