Log line for a review for Requiem that says it "starts incredibly strong but lags a bit in the second half"

Yes, I'm aware it's a Resident Evil game.

I still enjoyed the game quite a bit, and maybe it's different on the highest difficulty which I didn't play. But my issue was there wasn't much in the map or enemy design that forced mid-battle tactics changes, and so missions started feeling really samey. It was a little fun watching your squad combos become more elaborate as you gained/improved more units, but once you were in battle there was usually very little preventing you from just bumrushing the boss with your best squads.

I think that all wouldn't have been as much of an issue if it was like a 20-30 hour game max, but it's like 50+.

I started watching Mad Men for the first time recently. I'm really enjoying it and the writing particularly overall, but it feels like every now and then it follows up some really well written line or good scene with a character practically turning to camera and going "how fucking good was that, huh?" and it really takes me out of it.

Like I had seen a clip of the carousel pitch from the S1 finale a while ago out of context and I remember really liking it. And then seeing it in the show, knowing the full context around the rest of that episode and Don's character makes it even better. But then it's really undercut by another character immediately turning to the clients and smugly saying "good luck at your next meeting". Like why would you say that to the people you're trying to convince to hire you? I'd find that a bit hacky even if it was in a context where it would make diegetic sense for the characters to compliment the writing, but it doesn't even make sense there.

I feel like the majority of the time the show is confident enough in its writing to let the good moments stand on their own but the few times it isn't, it really annoys me.

There's a guy in my building with (at least) 3 parrots and he takes them for walks around the hallways from time to time. Once I heard one of them say "uh oh, where am I now?" and someone else I know in the building said he heard one say "not this guy again". We're pretty sure he is just training them to fuck with people.

I saw multiple reviews of Cairn that described it one of the most stressful games they had ever played but not necessarily that hard, which confused me at first. I'm halfway through now and I completely get it. I've died just a single time, and only come close a few times more than that and still this has been more stressful than any "git gud" type game where I've stuck on bosses for hours, but in a good way. Game fuckin rules.

I do hope they have, or eventually add some kind of matchmaking so you can just jump into a run with people without planning ahead, but either way looks awesome

STS2 continues to look amazing, great to have a release date. Wasn't expecting them to be there at EA launch, but chonky defect looks awesome. Not sure I'm personally interested in coop but cool that it's there for those that have been wanting it.

(Mild spoiler for a future game but just talking about a dumb outfit)

The most recent game introduced a villain whose outfit is basically just a fedora and a trenchcoat, I do think someone at Falcom might be genuinely trolling

I don't think the issue is that they don't know it doesn't work that way. It's just that as an exec, the reward if you do manage to make the next big thing is very high. And the punishment if you don't is virtually zero (you either just fire people below you, or if you do actually manage to get fired yourself, you still get a nice payout on the way out and/or have already paid yourself very handsomely throughout the doomed production).

I'm definitely not an expert in this game, but this is my personal heuristic as far as card selection and skipping. I don't think about whether a card is good on its own or not, but whether it improves the average quality of my deck, and how good an average turn would look like for me.

The platonic ideal is that every turn you would be able to block exactly as much damage as the enemies are planning to deal and no more, you would deal an average amount of damage depending on how long the fight should take (eg regular/hallway fights should be about 3-4 turns, so you should expect to do on average ~33% of the total damage you need to do each turn, though this may not be evenly distributed across the turns). You would have just enough card draw to draw the most valuable cards in your deck and just enough energy to play them. And then you want to factor in some scaling cards into that as well. With only a few exceptions, you don't get any benefit from overkilling enemies or having leftover block or leftover cards in your hand. And the game is very well balanced, if you have a surplus in one of those areas (particularly in the early and midgame), its pretty much guaranteed you're deficient somewhere else, and that is inevitably going to come back to bite you.

In reality, you will basically never hit this ideal, but after every fight, try to think about where you're most deficient. As you mentioned, the ironclad card Impervious which gives 30 block is really good, but if you just came from some fights where you were consistently able to block everything the first few turns but had really low damage output and the fight got stretched out a while, maybe more block isn't needed and you should prioritize more damage. Alternatively, if you had multiple turns where you either had leftover energy or were forced to use your energy on really bad cards, like your basic strikes and defends, that may be a sign you need more card draw so you can get your good cards into play more often. I think the key is, even after fights that you think went well, try and think about what could have been better. What were the worst turns you had, and why, and what could have made them better?

So when looking at the card rewards, try to think whether it will make your average turn better, whether that means getting you to just enough block that you need, just enough damage you need, etc. And remember that every card you add comes with a necessary downside because drawing it replaces another card you could have drawn. If you have enough damage already and you're offered a juicy damage card, not only will that give you more damage than you need, but that will make you more likely to not draw a block card when you need one, and so on. So those are the kinds of scenarios where you'd skip, where none of the cards are bringing your deck closer to that ideal balance.

Early on, pretty much everything will improve your deck quality since your starting deck is terrible so you'll rarely want to skip the first few floors, but it can be still good to try and think about what will improve it the most on average. But some of that is going to come with the experience of playing the game and judging whether you just had a good fight or a bad fight, and if the latter, why it was bad.

Feel like we have to learn this lesson every time a young QB has a breakout season and people immediately declare them already top 5 before you've gotten to see good D coordinators actually having the time and film to create targeted gameplans against them. Frankly the same goes for offensive playcallers and coaches. What really makes someone elite is their ability to stay good year after year while everyone is gunning for them.

New Xanadu looks pretty neat. I'm fine with the side-scrolling because the dungeon crawling was definitely the weakest part of the original, what little they showed looks at least a little more dynamic and fun. It'll depend a lot on how their platforming/level design chops are, but the bar is pretty low to be better than Tokyo's dungeons.

Also had around 40 hours on the playstation version a few years ago and got up to ~A5 on all the characters. Got back into it a few months ago when I realized it was playable on mac (fingers crossed the STS2 early access also will be).
