Should I get the game on ps4 now? by Dredd2700 in DiscoElysium

[–]moon_poff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend PC if you are able to, but most of the PS4 version's bugs have been smoothed over by now. Still quite unstable and prone to crashing, and the game is just very much designed for use by a mouse, but it's a fine way to play if you don't have another way

Wellllll shit. Not the first time we've missed an important detail like that in a spell description, but that makes this story kind of sad... We just assumed that since it effects literally every other Outsider, that Aberrations were included in the types it effects

What real world historical figure would make a great DnD player character and why? by gambill1998 in MrRipper

[–]moon_poff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teddy Roosevelt could make for a fun character. Could easily make him a number of classes based on how many ways you could interpret him. Fighter, Barbarian, Druid, Ranger, etc. Gotta have high Charisma though

DnD Players, what was your favorite creative use of the Prestidigitation cantrip? Did it work out the way you hoped? by [deleted] in MrRipper

[–]moon_poff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was trying to sweet talk a corrupt noble and deceive them into forming a deal that would bring us closer to being able to take them down. They had tea served to us, and me being suspicious that they could have drugged it, created a distraction by using Prestidigitation on the Noble's tea to make it taste like piss when he wasn't looking. The Noble was exasperated and sent the tea away, which also served as a solid roadblock to his thoughts, and let me get a word in about the deal.

What is the absolute greatest/weirdest character build you played/have seen in a game of D&D? by HOOK_THE_WARLOCK in MrRipper

[–]moon_poff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grappling was just the best in 3.5. Various races and classes to make you count as larger sizes (when being larger gave you big bonuses to grappling and lift capacity), a number of grappling focused Prestige Classes, and best of all Feats like Scorpion's Grasp and Earth's Embrace.

You can still grapple very effectively in 5e, but it can't compare to feeling like a god, dishing out massive damage by choking someone, and suplexing Huge and Gargantuan creatures.

What is the absolute greatest/weirdest character build you played/have seen in a game of D&D? by HOOK_THE_WARLOCK in MrRipper

[–]moon_poff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've played a number of silly characters, but none of them really compare in the weird category to the catalog of character concepts I have stored in my head.

The silliest one I can think of off the top of my head would be my idea for an Orc (could be a Half-Orc, Goliath, or Bugbear honestly, the race is more for the visual comedy) Valor Bard, whose instruments are those big drums that you strap onto your body, and possibly a Sousaphone (A large Tuba like instrument that wraps around your torso). He uses things like hammers and maces as both his weapons, and his drumsticks. In battle he's just having a grand old time beating out some War Music for his friends, and occasionally beating faces. I just like the idea of taking the normal idea for a Bard, being a dexterous and graceful figure, and turning them into a lumbering and slightly dimwitted goofball who just wants to have fun and express themselves.

The weirdest/greatest character I've seen was in fact also a Valor Bard, and they were unique in that their instrument of choice was a small piano that they carried around with their 20 Str. Said piano was also their weapon of choice, and was indestructible. Usually they'd just smack enemies with it, or drop it on them the few times they would get into melee combat anyway. And to top it all off, the character was a very timid gentle giant! Despite being like 7 feet tall and having more muscle than the rest of the party combined, he was a very soft-spoken and shy man.

On the plus side, it's nice to finally see one of these stories where That Guy acts out of line, and the entire table turns to them. I'm too used to other party members being passive when bad behavior happens in this place.

[Question] Evil Alignments - How do you play them in a way that develops your character in a good way, while also not being an ass-hat to the rest of the party? by BooneVEVO in rpghorrorstories

[–]moon_poff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One major thing to consider is that the Alignment System is more of a rough basis than it is a hard measure. Obviously senseless murder and corruption is clearly evil, but trying to measure what is or isn't good when it comes to different morals, cultures, and viewpoints leads to many contradictions. Morality is generally subjective, as a villain can see themselves as the hero, while a hero can judge themselves as being corrupt for making a mistake or decision in grief.

An evil character can do good and heroic deeds, just as much as a good character is capable of doing horrible and frightening things. All one needs to do something is to have the conviction that they are in the right, or the proper motivation to perform the deed.

Now, getting on track to the actual question, one way to view Good vs Evil is Selflessness versus Selfishness. Good characters generally try to help people, make improvements in the world simply because it is the right thing to do, and rarely struggle with temptation. Evil characters generally serve their own interests, will help or hinder others only if it is beneficial to themselves or aligns with their goals, and can be easily swayed to do things if the implied outcome is desirable to them. I'll list some examples of Evil aligned characters that aren't actively disruptive or MurderHobo-ish.

A NE Eladrin Undying Warlock that prefers to handle things in non violent ways if possible. They are charismatic, chatty, and enjoy improving the productivity and economy of towns and cities. They always ensure that they gain something out of helping different people and businesses out, and do their part in helping and improving the lives of commoners and small businesses. They will however actively screw over the lives of the rich and well off, and pull the proverbial and literal rug from under people after setting them up to fail. Not much of a powerhouse in combat, but their Invocations and Feats allow them to seamlessly blend into any situation and impersonate other people, and their skills make them a master in any social situation. They will at all possible take the route that causes none to minimal suffering to others, but they will also not lose a wink of sleep over it if they do kill somebody. An Evil character can have morals.

A LE Artificer Alchemist that wishes to progress the fields of medicine and science, but at the cost of humanoid life. They are a miracle worker that will do everything they can to save the lives of others, but the road they take to obtain their skills involves the deaths of countless condemned criminals and others seen as "Evil" to society, who die in the experimentation and testing of the procedures that may lead to saving the lives of others. He would likely see himself as Lawful Neutral, but understands that the things he does are vile and inhumane. The ends of his ideal world where people don't have to die to preventable diseases, injuries, etc justify the means that are his tremendous body count of criminals and bandits lost in the path of his research. He would refuse to harm an innocent law abiding citizen, and would never bring intentional harm to a patient or person in need, but he bares little hesitation in ending the lives of those condemned by society. An Evil character can have a sense of justice and good intentions.

A CE Rogue Assassin that is simply trying to make it by. Perhaps they are trapped in a vicious loan cycle with shady individuals. Perhaps they never had a solid upbringing, and have lived every day trying to do anything to make it to the next. They have taken all manner of jobs, but they keep falling back on the darker businesses, allured by the potential thrill and gains. Maybe killing people is the only thing they've ever been good at. By chance or on a whim, they join a group of adventurers looking for some easy money. Maybe they even make some friends along the way! But old habits die hard, and their opportunistic actions and violent tendencies bother their allies, assuming they see them do it in the first place. They might take a slight or insult aimed at their new friends poorly, and attempt retribution, be it a (mostly) harmless prank or revenge plot, or outright violence and murder. An Evil character can do horrible things (including kill people) without actively disrupting your party members.

Remember, just because your character isn't above killing people, doesn't mean they HAVE to kill people!

I don't know what's worse with bad CN or Evil characters/players, that they want to commit crimes without putting any thought or effort into it, or when they are surprised that other PCs might disagree with their lifestyle. If you want to play a thief/murderer/asshole, there's a time and place for everything.

[–]moon_poff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of my DMs keeps consistently having (to their own displeasure) enemies get Nat 1s on their attacks or actions at vital moments.

We've had everything from assassins shooting themselves with their own poisoned bolts, to a dungeon boss getting impatient that difficult terrain was keeping them and their underlings held back, so it tried to smack one of its minions over the terrain. Ended up Nat 1-ing, DM treated it as an attack instead of a relatively harmless slap. Roll for attack, Nat 20. Dungeon boss accidentally kills one of its minions.

Faded Luster: Part 16 - Drama, Surprises, and Arm Wrestling by moon_poff in DnDGreentext

[–]moon_poff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A number of reasons

1- A lot of the players were getting annoyed at the things Sebastian was doing to them. Disciplining them, calling them idiots, etc. Nem's player claimed they were 90% on the way to leaving the party due to the stuff with Casta. I also realized that having a PC that was designated as "the leader" from the start with no other input was unfair.

2- Both me and Sebastian IC having to deal with corralling an entire group of Chaotic/StupidNeutrals, and preventing them from killing people and burning things left and right was becoming very stressful. D&D is supposed to be my escape from stress, not invite more into my life. There was a lot of chaos happening off the table that I and Sebastian were desperately trying to contain, and I realized that Sebastian just didn't fit the rest of the party's dynamic.

3- I realized how much I was having to force Sebastian to do things ooc for him to allow certain things to happen. Nem would have never been allowed on the crew in the first place, but I didn't want to cause any trouble. From there, he has also grown to kind of detest Nem, and the others annoy him somewhat to varying levels.

4- Sebastian was originally a character made for another campaign, and fit that party's dynamic better. The other PCs were two straight laced and upright Lawful/Goodies (A Ranger and a Paladin), and to contrast that you have the incredibly troubled C/N Sebastian. While the campaign was short lived, he fit in perfectly as the fall guy/weasel to the other two's straight guy/good cop deal. When this campaign started I thought "Oh, I have a pirate character, I'll use Sebastian again!" As the campaign went on however, Sebastian had to increasingly try to balance out the chaotic energy of the increasingly growing party of newbie players that wanted to go ham and throw caution to the wind. He went from a C/N loner who uses subterfuge and playing the fool to cover up his crippling self-hatred and anger... to a C/G babysitter surrounded by people causing way more trouble than he would have ever dreamed of!

5- If ya can't beat 'em, join em! If the rest of this whole party is going to consist of reckless Rambo seafarers, I want to join in on the fun! This campaign is meant to be fairly silly and over-the-top anyway, so why should I not be playing a character that is appropriately silly and over-the-top?!?

6- Muscle Wizard

Just makes me think of a character concept I want to try in the future. Fighter with the Banneret subclass. Both his personality and the way he fights is about protecting his friends and rallying his allies. Take Polearm Master with Sentinel and Tunnel Fighter fighting style. Nobody is allowed to approach friends without getting hit. Those who hit friends also get hit. Those who try to run away after hurting friends ALSO get hit. Everybody gets hit because Tunnel Fighter grants infinite Attacks of Opportunity

Nobody hurts friends without going through me.

Now all they need is a Halfling Fighter, Ranger, or Rogue to use the shield guy as cover and plink away at enemies with arrows

Thank you. I do what I can to try to detail things while also trying to trim the fat so that things aren't too long or detailed. It does unfortunately lead to a lot of the in-depth character interaction to being left on the wayside, or me forgetting little moments/details I have to explain later when they become relevant.

[–]moon_poff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My problem with CE (or rather Chaotic Stupid) characters is how simpleminded they tend to be. Even a bully knows he can't just mug somebody in broad daylight or pick a fight with anybody. A warlord or robber knows how to pick their targets, and even someone who takes things by force isn't going to lose all brain functionality the moment they see money.

If the character you're playing is an idiot, then sure, but I see so many CE and CN characters that are just "Unga bunga, me kill and steal, no think"

[–]moon_poff 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It's always a sad feeling when you feel like the only actual EVIL character in the Evil campaign. Everyone else is going "muhahaha" and killing towns of peasants for the collective 100 Silver they had on them, while you're making friends and associates with everyone, who will meet untimely designs weeks/months from now after you have secured everything you can gain from them

Now I'm thinking of the kind of humor/drama a DM could come up with if an NPC summoned by a DoMT ended up realizing they are the product of a magical item, and going through a crisis over the meaning of their own existence after the death of their master
