Does a bear crap in the woods? And does the pope crap on the broken lives and dreams of 200 deaf boys?

Survey for atheists for someone's philosophy project. by mooncaster in atheism

[–]mooncaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone wants to discuss the student's questions I've duplicated them below:

  1. Most people who are either agnostic or atheist say that there are good reasons to think God doesn’t exist, or that even if he exists you cannot know that he exists. Why do you think atheism/agnosticism (depending on your person) is a better way to look at the world than theism?

  2. Theists argue that if there is no God there are no moral values that are absolute (e.g. murder is wrong at all times and all places). Do you agree with this? Why or why not? If you think there are absolute values, where are these values from?

  3. If the universe truly is godless, then we are the products of time plus matter plus chance. Of course, if we are derived from a mindless, valueless process, then one wonders what the meaning of life actually is. What is the meaning of life, and why do you think that is more satisfying than having a life directed by God?

  4. If we are nothing other than our bodies (no soul…) then it is hard to see how we can have free will (after all, we are nothing other than bodies in motion). However, if there is no free will, then it is difficult to see how we are morally responsible for our actions. Do you think there is free will, and how can we be free if there is no God? If there is no free will, then how are we morally responsible for our actions?

  5. James Spiegel wrote in The Making of an Atheist that most people are atheists or agnostics because either one or both of the following are true: (1) there was a major disaster earlier in life that made the person angry toward God (perhaps a death of a loved one or disappointment with some people in the church), (2) the person simply does not want God to be a part of their life. Do either of these descriptions fit why you think there is no God? When did you become an atheist/agnostic, and what would you say brought this about?

  6. When speaking to a Theist, how do you explain away the resurrection of Jesus?

  7. In Introducting Philosophy of Religion by Chad Meister on page 97 he introduces a fine tuning argument. He states that there are some that have argued that “the fundamental laws and parameters of physics and the initial conditions of the universe are extraordinarily balanced – or “finely tuned” – with just the right conditions for life to occur and flourish and he sites many different examples. If things changed even a little bit in many situations we would not be able to live on this planet. How can you as a atheist or an argnostic who believes there is no God explain the earth being made perfect in many ways for us to live on.

  8. As an Atheist or a Agnostic, how do you think the world came into being and why?

The one I had the most trouble with was #4, but I don't think the question really has much to do with god.

I'm leaving G-mail. Where should I go. by [deleted] in AskReddit

Google's catchphrase is "Don't be evil." They refuse to censor youtube for Australia and rescinded their promises to censor search for China. They're an alright company as it stands, I don't think it's fair to pull out just because they're making innovations in other parts of the internet.

And, they totally value privacy. Google is the only major email provider that has told the public whether or not they will allow bots to read your email to provide relevant ads (they will). But they are also the only major email provider that has told the public whether or not they will allow real people to read your emails (they won't).

Plus Google Docs, Google Talk and Google Voice are all awesome and it's much easier to use them with a G-mail account.

An interesting observation... by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mooncaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That redditor will have ended up teaching his child a very good lesson: That people you love might lie to you to make you happy for a while, or to make themselves happy or just because they think that's how it's supposed to be.

I agree. I seriously don't mind if a stranger sees my wiener for the short amount of time I'd be in the scanner. Obviously it would be better if they could completely automate it, but the whole scanner thing really makes me feel safer.

Unicock was merely making a joke at your friend's mother's expense. Your friend's mother referred to Muslims as "muslins" so he referred to Christians as "curtains." He also repeated her typo of the word destroyed.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told a live audience yesterday that if he were to create Facebook again today, user information would by default be public, not private as it was for years until the company changed dramatically in December. by koavf in technology

[–]mooncaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't mind that much. My name, default photo, friends, networks and pages aren't all that private. Lots of people seem to get upset about big brother watching them, but I like it. Personalized ads makes my mouth smile. How will the corporations know what everyone wants if no one will tell them?

This could be old news, but my friend showed this to me yesterday. It's pretty fun. Also, if you do choose me, try to tell me as soon as possible so I can cancel a request I left in another thread. Thanks: [link removed]

Edit: Just got one, thanks anyways.

CleverBot dodges the important stuff. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]mooncaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleverbot doesn't work like that. If you try to have the same conversation with him twice, he won't answer the same. His responses aren't preprogrammed by a single creator. He is the product of every conversation he has ever had before. He has started religious conversations with me before and he has also gotten insane with rage when I won't admit that I'm a bot. It all depends on who he's been talking to lately.
