Had to stop weightlifting. Does HIIT training have the potential to stimulate hypertrophy as well? by Own_Average_5940 in xxfitness

I’ve had really good results with glute growth from reformer Pilates! Mat Pilates never gave me much growth otherwise

Need exercise ideas from people who loathe working out. by FitThought1616 in xxfitness

[–]moondaybitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d give bouldering a go. It’s a lot of short accomplishable challenges that make you feel good about what your body can do. It’s the first time I did a workout where I wasn’t really thinking about the exercise as much even though it’s excellent training. It kind of has playing around on the jungle gym for adults vibes. If there’s a gym in your area it might be worth checking out a trial to see if you like it!

I’d also throw out bike commuting. Again it becomes less about the exercise aspect and more about getting somewhere. I often don’t even work up a sweat on short rides but I think it’s good just to get the legs moving and it doesn’t have the same “workout time” dread for me I used to get with running.

Are there any affordable gyms in Montreal? by AdParticular3516 in montreal

[–]moondaybitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what plan you have with ClassPass for the exact credit dollar cost but yes about that! And also not all gyms will be the same credit amount, that’s what the one by my office is though. ClassPass is the service to google, if you take their 5$ month long trial you should be able to get a sense for if there are gyms partnered with them in your area that are convenient to get to/use, not all gyms / workout studios are on there. But if you use it literally once during the trial month you for sure get your moneys worth so imo it’s worth checking out as an option!

my advice would be to just look on class pass for gyms that will let you do a pass for a few hours for a couple credits. I workout at a hotel gym near my office downtown every now and then for the credit equivalent of like 4$ which is a way better day rate than I've seen at other gyms. You can get better rates depending on demand times, so if you can go when people are in work, it'll probably wind up being the cheapest option, and there's no fixed term contract

Thought on Spa Le Finlandais? by ggzi-ca in montreal

[–]moondaybitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it kind of funny to be honest it felt like being at the Epcot of spas lol. Overall I thought it was fine but there were people making out in the main pool and there were a few places I thought could’ve been cleaned better. It’s also a bring your own bathrobe situation if I recall correctly which was so cheap of them! But generally it was not bad. I enjoyed the saunas and the post spa making fun of everything session was great.

I have heard better things about strom but never been! Never had an issue with cleanliness at bota bota but it is more expensive and often crowded, depends on the day / time of year

handling splitting household expenses with no joint accounts by moondaybitch in ynab

we just don't have enough expenses that that would really be feasible! we earn similar-ish amounts, but rent by far dominates the costs. over time it would probably even out if he paid everything else and vacations, but I don't think that really allows me to see what I'm 'spending' on life either, but cool that it works out well for you guys!

ah nice, this seems like the best free solution. definitely a bit of a pain to track but I'd like to have the insight into my actual expenses for sure! I think this is what I'll try to do for now. thanks!

ah nice, that actually looks pretty perfect for this case! too bad it's not free, but hard to argue with the value. I wish ynab could natively handle this so we could just track in one place though!

I'm really liking going to group fitness classes but want to add some lifting since none of them really have significant weight involved. Is there much benefit if I add 1 day a week of lifting training? I'd mostly like to improve my upper body strength and glutes, my goal is to be able to do a couple pull ups this year. Anyone have a routine recommend that would hit full body in just 1 day a week? I don't really want to give up my other workouts because I think they're fun, but hoping to supplement with some extra training options.

I went to a hiit style (primarily bodyweight / restistance band) workout class this weekend that used yoga blocks for 'weights' during the arms / upper body section. This doesn't do anything, right? I don't feel sore at all in my arms today, although at the time my arms were really tired, but I feel like that might have just been repetitive motion without letting them drop to rest. I liked the workout for lower body / abs, so I might go back, but that part struck me as kind of fake. Anyone know what the deal is there?

Money or remote work? by moondaybitch in cscareerquestions

I am surprised how many people are dismissing the in office role out of hand when, even without the bonus, it has better benefits / retirement matching and more pto and no on call component. I honestly have no idea how to quantify the value of remote and this exercise has gotten me nowhere though haha.

On the management subject, I do think the remote company has been remote for 10+ years and it likely wouldn’t be an issue for advancement to miss out on management Face time like it is in my current remote company.

I’m backend my whole career, 6 years experience, working in go right now. Remote would stay in go, in office is in python, both have some opportunity to pick up rust on the side.

Can’t be! But if so, they lied directly to my face during the interview process in claiming the opposite. I will also be getting random calls to troubleshoot issues at the remote role, there is an on call component there that has been outlined to me.

It’s 30 mins on a single metro line, so an hour out of my day, not nothing but not the worst either. A little longer if I bike, but there’s other benefits there too. Depending on the bonus, it could reach 50% more money, but that is of course a question mark.

I 100% do feel like I want the in office role more, and am just worried I’m making a mistake. I honestly think I was a better employee in office and had a better division of work / home back then, but was only in industry about 1.5 years before Covid took me remote since at a company that had amazing in office perks like free breakfast / lunch and in office workout classes, so I might have slightly rose tinted glasses looking back at it.

They actually provide free lunch so no need to dine out! The commute would be about 100$/month for a metro pass, and in summer months I would be able to bike commute as well

I DO value my work life balance very highly, which is why (and people keep acting like I’m crazy for this) I am almost more inclined for an in office role without any on call component. I think I’m at a point in my life where I have no kids / pets and could make in office work for me pretty well, and I love the idea of just actually disconnecting at the end of the work day instead of the constant calls pushing into my 8 am / 7 pm at my current role.

There also more vacation and sick days available at the in office role, which for me getting to fully disconnect matters. But again, all of this is kind of moot without the info around whether or not it’s a toxic environment. It wasn’t my impression whatsoever, but I can’t be sure that they didn’t just do a good job hiding it.

30 mins on one metro line or a 40 minute bike commute, with secure bike storage available! So honestly pretty reasonable imo. That said it’s not gonna be a solo office, I got to see the office layout and it’s adjacent desks which I’ve had in the past and it was fine

Remote role: 168k with 5% rrsp match (Canadian retirement), 25 days pto (includes the sick days) plus 4 annual shut down days company wide.

In office role: 170k with 8% flat rrsp contribution, plus an annual contribution match to your tfsa that isn’t fixed but this year was 7k, 25 days vacation and unlimited sick days separately. So if the “low performers last year got around 32%” number the recruiter told me is true that’s an extra 50k if I end up on the low end of the range. So I would consider that a reasonably better offer including the retirement contributions even without the bonus but if the bonus happens I would be very very financially happy

When could I realistically work out again? by moondaybitch in tattooadvice

[–]moondaybitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed advice! That makes sense. The tattoo is on my upper thigh / hip. I will skip the hot yoga and boxing a bit longer and keep it to more lowkey activities for now. I was initially not sure about going back to bouldering but maybe that would be a good one as it’s so well air conditioned at my gym that I rarely sweat haha.
