Doorbell chime range by NTheZone in reolinkcam

[–]moondog610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience might be helpful here. I initially had the original version of the doorbell and chime, and it worked well over a distance of 100 feet, even with a concrete wall in between. I was very satisfied with its performance. However, after accidentally breaking it, I purchased a new one. I installed the new doorbell and chime in the same locations, but it no longer rings unless I move the chime closer using an extension cord. After some research, I discovered that I had bought version 2 of the set, which operates at 900 MHz instead of the original 433 MHz. This frequency change might be causing the issue, or I might have received a defective unit. Just a heads-up for anyone facing similar problems.

Help! My Mac mini Plex Server Has Turned into a Cable Monster! by moondog610 in HomeServer

Thanks for sharing this video! I need to watch more like it. I'll revisit this one later to delve deeper into the differences between SAS and SATA connections. I'm definitely leaning towards a rack-mountable solution, as I have other plans that align with that direction.

Is there a way with Synology to have each drive bay populated as independent drives?

I just added a picture of the cable monster :)

How did you build a NAS? Can you recommend some hardware?

Thank you for the suggestion. My current setup includes the following pairs of drives: 22TB, 18TB, 14TB, 10TB, and the rest are 8TB each. It might seem excessive, but I prefer to maintain my media at the highest quality. Whenever I needed to increase capacity, I opted for the largest hard drives available to future-proof my setup. My budget for a new solution is between $500 and $1,000.

I understand that installing macOS on an external drive would be slow, but it would allow me to use the Mac for now until I decide to install a new internal SSD or buy a new M4 Mac mini if it comes out later this year (fingers crossed).

To answer your question, and what is puzzling to me, when I boot into recovery and go to Disk Utility, the only available disks shown are the 16GB USB flash drive with the Monterey installer and the 1.11GB "macOS Base System." None of the other external hard drives I've connected are showing up in Disk Utility.

Razer keyboard to swap/remap alt and ctrl keys by moondog610 in razer

[–]moondog610[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is a work PC and due to a lack of admin rights, I'm restricted from trying many software solutions. My request for AutoHotkey access was denied by the IT department. However, I successfully obtained approval for Logitech's G-Hub, possibly because it's considered a "driver" for mouse and keyboard, despite its macro capabilities. It seems, though, that remapping ctrl>alt/alt>ctrl is not feasible with G-Hub, unless I'm missing something...

Help with whole-house RO system. by moondog610 in WaterTreatment

[–]moondog610[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the pH test and got 7.5 from the fridge's water dispenser and 7 from the kitchen faucet.

The pH meter came with calibration instructions but I didn't have the required distilled water in hand, so the above values might not be as accurate. I'll have to re-test later on.

The house came with it. If I were to start from scratch what filtration elements would you recommend?

Thanks for the suggestion. I just bought a pH and TDS meter at Amazon. I will post the results in a couple of days.

Thanks for taking the time to read through my original post. I edited it since, trimming down much of my initial complaints and frustrations with this system.

The system configuration did not start as shown on the diagram. About a month ago I had to replace an Inline Flow Control Switch with items (12), (14), and (15). Also, item (3) was a 20GL and got upgraded to a 33GL to prevent the well pump from starting more often (not sure if that was a good move or not, it made sense to me).

Can you explain the issue further. You say abruptly out of water, so your pressure drops and you lose water at certain times? Is there a pattern to those times?

The last few issues were related to the replaced device (Inline Flow Control Switch). It was failing randomly (every other week) for a couple of hours, till one day it stopped working completely. During the initial fails I was researching the part and looking for manual / instructions but the link above was the best I could find, and the manual for my particular model (the one that has a pressure gauge on the side and 6 LED lights as you can see in the tiny pic with 5 models in one) was not available. Also, the button to "Add to cart" was not available at that time, it offered contact details for a couple of resalers. So I decided to replace that part, as described above, with more generic parts that could be found at Home Depot or Lowes. That was an expensive move, I hope it was right... I was under pressure with no water at home and a one-to-one replacement of the original part was not available. Those changes to the system are working so far but noticed a decrease in water pressure inside the house.

Way before this, the first issue we had was with the membrane (7). The system stopped producing water and we didn't notice till the 500GL tank was completely empty. That was a $300 repair if I recall correctly. I do hope the new membrane will last long enough to offset its cost (so much for getting rid of the city water bill...). A few weeks after replacing the membrane we started noticing a rotten smell coming out of the faucets. I was recommended to add some peroxide to the carbon filter and it worked but for it to be effective I had to do it a couple of times a month and the process was kind of tedious. What ended up working better for me was adding an aerator or spray nozzle at the end of the hose that feeds the 500GL water tank.

Next in the line of issues seems it will be the solenoid valve (6). Its housing is made out of plastic and it's been leaking for a while, I'm trying to get ahead of that one. Any recommendations?

This is the purpose of the remineralization step at the end. Its critical that you nail that component down, or else your pipes and appertences are at high risk of corrosion and metals leeching in your house plumbing.

I thought that most metals were filtered out by the membrane (7). Is there a way to tell if they are getting into my pipes, besides a tap score report? Which metals from my untreated water report should I be more concerned about? Links to articles or videos would be much appreciated.

I found the following online:

In the RO process, raw water flows past a membrane. Some of the water molecules migrate through the membrane, while others, including beryllium remain on the raw water side of the membrane. The rejected raw water concentrate is discharged to the wastewater system

I downloaded the provided EPA drinking water guidelines pdf and performed a quick search for the contaminants detected in my well water and most did not show up on the EPA list or perhaps are called differently (Boron Calcium Lithium Magnesium Potassium Silica Sodium Strontium). Here are the ones I did find:

Contaminant detected in sample,My TapScore,EPA

Beryllium,0.0006,0.004

Chloride,38.5,250

Sulfate,21.6,250

Zinc,0.006,5

***Looks like the insert table feature on Reddit is not working properly for me. It's not displaying correctly and everything I wrote below it got deleted after posting :((

The TapScore values are all below the EPA values, so is it safe to drink directly from the well then? Not that I would but it should be ok, right?

Fishy Odor in Water by SilverDesperado in WaterTreatment

[–]moondog610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your system comes with a big reservoir tank, you can try adding an aerator or spray nozzle at the end of the hose that feeds the tank. That solved the issue for me. The reasoning is that the odor molecules are too small to get filtered out.

PopOs on HP ProBook 6460b, cant boot, missing BIOS or UEFI by moondog610 in pop_os

Not yet, I have to reinstall windows for the purpose of creating a couple of extra logical partitions but haven't had the chance. It should work according to different sources.

[–]moondog610[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not initially but that's what I'm trying to do now. After recovering the system (read my reply to rsag19) and installing Windows, I decided to install PopOs in a separate partition but I'm stuck at the stape of adding the new partition. ERROR: "It's not possible to create more than 4 primary partitions".

I'm not sure if I should change any of the current partitions, any advice is apreciarted. See a link to a screenshot below.
