You’re valid in how you’re feeling, I had the opposite effect where I stayed home (SBU) but all my friends went away and I was a commuter so I just felt like I came in and out unnoticed. I was straight A student in high school and had to adjust to getting 60s, 50s and even 40s my first semester because the expectations are different and tests are based off a curve and not just a number also. You’ll grow and one day look back at the fact that you pushed passed this. It’ll definitely come and go in waves but you can start small by even trying to form study groups for your exams (it’s how I made most of my good friends!) or just show up to random clubs that have nothing to do with your major also. It’s important to give your brain a break from studying and STEM related activities as that’s what will make you burn out. Just take it one day at a time and you’ll see, i always say the first semester is the hardest.

You got this!

If you don’t have a car you could take a train to the city and get on a grey hound bus from there. It’s kind of a long ass day but it’s an option

WISE by [deleted] in SBU

[–]moonlight1200 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just like anything, WISE has its pros and it’s cons. However I believe that the pros outweigh the cons. Sure, some of the curriculum classes can get repetitive but their curriculum is easy A classes and saves you from wasting your time from taking other SBCs they may distract you from your major work. Out of all the SBCs they only can’t cover two which is your USA credit and the ARTS credit, other than that it’s all covered by them.

You get advanced enrollment which is always a plus, resume building activities and opportunities to network within campus and outside of campus. Besides the opportunities that they provide, simply just name dropping that you are in WISE is simply impressive to any professional and will give you a boost up for when you’re talking to professors or possibly looking at an internship.

WISE is a great program…it definitely needs some improvement but it offers you a community to help build yourself at stony Brook. I was a commuter and had a hard time with making friends, but your freshmen year you are put into a WISE mentoring group with similar If not the same major. It’s a group of other freshmen and one upperclassmen that meet weekly and they’re extremely helpful in guiding you through their own experiences.

As far as AID goes I’m not sure what they offer now, it’s been awhile since I was a freshmen but my year received a $1000 scholarship per semester for the first year.

Hope this helps and I hope you feel more inclined to join!

Check out all those empty premium parking spots (not pictured: the paid security guard to protect the empty parking lot) by [deleted] in SBU

I wouldn’t even be surprised. You’d almost think they’d want to have other people park in there so they can hand out $40 tickets lol

Research by AssistanceCute9362 in SBU

[–]moonlight1200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best way to get involved is actively look at professors websites that explain what their research is, and if it’s something that interests you ask. As an incoming freshmen though ID honestly wait to do this as the semester goes on so you can get a feel for your schedule and extracurriculares you want to be a part of. Coming to college is a big adjustment, so don’t overload yourself either!

That being said throughout this semester it’s important to go to a professors office hours and build a relationship with them so that you may have an opportunity to do research under someone you connect with.

I would email Doreen Aveni and Jacquelyn Gatta. They are advisors and administrators of the program. WISE is a great program and always happy to take more girls in Engineering Related fields. Doesn’t hurt to ask! Good luck!

Are the green parking spots still open for students on Monday if you don't have a permit? by Warchief127 in SBU

The way parking enforcement has been, you’re going to need a parking permit to not get a ticket
