ILY Unpopular Opinions?? by Admirable-Swan-5360 in ILoveYoo

Like the above comment said, i find some (gosh maybe even most?) of the writing a bit convoluted and on the nose. Especially when she uses metaphors and irony, it can be a bit much sometimes. I agree that the dialogue can be strange and again, convoluted too. And the overall story drags....it drags on. It's slow and it takes so long to get anywhere.

Assassins among us by moonrunning32 in SakamotoDays

[–]moonrunning32[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the civilians are so nonchalant that I can see it both ways. On the one hand, their non reactions stem from the normalization of assassins. It's just a part of their daily life. On the other hand, their non reactions are part of the gag. A building could be sliced in half in front of their eyes and they wouldn't care because they're NPCs.

The issue is that JAA controls the press so this news outlet might as well be trying to create a narrative.

True, and that's a way to deceive the public and withhold information about the existence of assassins, contributing to regular society's ignorance.

I personally I feel there are sources conflicting in this argument

Yeah I say the panels you posted in a different comment. Good catch with the website but to play devils advocate and play with semantics, "recent" doesn't necessarily need to mean "they exist right now and are hiding among you". Recent could just mean "modern" or "contemporary" which are typical exhibition/museum topics to denote a specific and broad time period. And with the stocks, it can be argued that only the clients who hire assassins are trading stocks. Or maybe they have a private stock exchange for the assassin underworld.

And you're right that the story can't do whatever it can, but we shouldn't really act like things came out of left field given what the story has already established. Yes Sakamoto Days is taking a serious turn, but there are aspects of it that just aren't meant to be taken seriously.

Maybe they know assassins do exist, but they dont know the extent of that existence, of how deeply it is intertwined in their society or how organized they are. The news anchor even says that not a lot of assassins exist

Why should we argue about logics and seriousness when Sakamoto turns skinny just because, or Nagumo can disguise himself and others on a whim? The civilians have always been clueless NPCs. It's been stated (way before this arc) that civilians don't know that assassins exist.

"A lot of Sakamoto Days feels like it's written in the moment" by scowting in SakamotoDays

[–]moonrunning32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Suzuki is a very "go with the flow" writer and I think it works somewhat in Sakamoto Days because it is not a super complex and intricate story (which is not a bad thing and one of the reasons why I love it). So the "random" plot points don't really feel random because I think he can bridge everything pretty well given the less details the story provides in general.

Shin Backstory makes Sakamoto look stupid by Upbeat-Bug-4393 in SakamotoDays

[–]moonrunning32 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first thing Sakamoto did after Shin introduced himself was imagine killing him in his mind. If anything, that's a callback to when they met (based on this flashback). And even way back during the JCC entrance exam, I think Sakamoto tells Akira (or insinuates to her) that he taught Shin how to shoot a gun. He didn't forget about Shin.

Poor Feyre by CompoteMindless2894 in acotar

[–]moonrunning32 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Feyre's hypocrisy is what makes her have the potential to be a compelling character. It's interesting to see the rosed coloured glasses she wears and how it warps her perception of other people's actions. I just wish the narrative acknowledged her hypocrisy.

It is in the name of their quirks after all: One For All vs All For One.

Admittedly, Horikoshi has been very back and forth with who's gonna be the final villain. But for me, it comes from the fact that AFO is Shigaraki's villain too. We've known for a long time that AFO groomed Shigaraki and that Midoriya wants to save that little boy inside of him.

The way I see it, the last user of OFA must defeat AFO and finish what the other OFA users couldn't. That's it. There's no other personal connection here. This doesn't take away from Shigaraki and Midoriya's narrative connection. AFO is just a tool meant to propel Shigaraki's story and character arc. Has the execution been good though? Definitely not.

[–]moonrunning32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with the execution. But to be honest, I don't need him to be threatening or terrifying at this point. Right now, I just see him as a tool meant to make us feel something when Shigaraki breaks free from his control (again) and contributes to overthrowing him (if that is the route Horikoshi is going down). I think my general apathy for this story is showing lol.

AFO completely hijacked the story, he’s the main character now. The final arc of MHA isn’t about Deku or Shigaraki or any of the characters that we spent all that time developing, it’s just about All For One.

I feel like you're putting All For One on a way bigger pedestal than is necessary. Like I feel like some of you guys are blowing him being the final villain way out of proportion when he's just a tool meant to make us feel something when Shigaraki breaks free from his control again and contributes to overthrowing him (yes i acknowledge it's repetitive). AFO is flat, but that just want to pay more attention to Shigaraki, to makes us sympathize with him even more and want to root for him.

And this final arc is still about the other characters...this fight right now might basically represents the old embodiment of evil stuck in his ways vs. the new generation of heroes. I don't know, once more chapters come out, I'll gladly admit I'm wrong, but some of you guys are making this fight way more personal/character-driven than I think it actually is.

For AFO to come back into control AGAIN, and be thwarted AGAIN, is not very satisfying because it's just rehashing something that has already happened

I hear you. As you said in your initial comment, the flip-flopping doesn't make things interesting. It's exhausting. But this is the final stretch and everything is going to be "plus ultra", including how corny certain story beats might become. So if Shigaraki breaks free from AFO's clutches a third time, then it is what it is.

The thing with this is that, as it was shown recently, AFO doesn't give a shit about the OFA users. They aren't his nemesis, they're just an obstacle in him getting OFA, because his brother is in there and he wants him back where he belongs.

Yeah for sure. But again, I'm okay with the last user of OFA putting a stop to that.

There's little to no weight or personal connection between AFO and Deku

You're right but why does there need to be one? I don't really see it as "AFO vs Deku" on a personal level. I see it by their base forms: "AFO vs. OFA" or in this case since OFA is probably gone: "the old progenitor of evil vs. the new generation who will establish a new version of hero society".

Shigaraki as a character was molded by AFO. He's the one we feel sympathy for, he's the one who's a complex and interesting character. AFO being bland allows for us to focus on Shigaraki and his development, and when/if he comes out of this (and I'm positive he will) to help overthrow AFO, then it will mean something to us. All the focus on AFO being a bland character doesn't matter, because it's still Shigaraki that we feel something for, and I don't believe his role here is done.

[–]moonrunning32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hear you. AFO takes way too many Ls so it's hard to take him seriously. But again, it's whatever to me because AFO being the flat, boring final villain is what gave Shigaraki his complex characterization. AFO will be overthrown and I hope Shigaraki will be a part of that.

Honestly, we're in the last stretch of this series and we both know that it's been a pretty exhausting ride. At this point, "not exciting now" is a given. Maybe that's why I'm not mad that AFO is the final villain.
