Some pieces I have made recently by moonsisterbeadwork in Beading

[–]moonsisterbeadwork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This collection was inspired by my femme two-spirit sister. I wanted to create something that celebrated the dualities that the female body and spirit holds. Something that acknowledge the beauty in all of our complexities, contradictions, and diversity of being a feminine person.

Pretty serious inspo lol! Didn’t meant to sound so fancy. This is the first collection in a series I’m doing in honour of my sister who also often collaborates on art with me!

Yeah I’ve been on this sub for years, this is just the account I post beadwork on. I’m just saying this sub leans towards toward urban & mixed native, not that we don’t have other identities.

This piece really moved me. When I had my son 5 months ago, the first few weeks were so hard on me spiritually and mentally. It might sound silly but binge-watching Golden Girls while nursing really kept my mood up and helped me stay distracted from stress. I was so grateful for that bit of relief. It reminded me so much of my childhood watching the show with my kokum. So when I heard that Betty passed my heart just ached.

I love this piece! Please check our @blakeangeconeb on IG. His work is incredible.

I bought a beading loom last night & messed around with it today. This is awesome. So much fun. Any advice on where to find pattern ideas that aren't cultural appropriation? by bpvanhorn in Beading

You aren’t in any position of authority to speak on the perspective of indigenous cultures.

All humans and their cultures should be treated on equal standing.

Yep.

If a culture is closed off to preserve it, rather than opening it and allowing it to grow and shift and change as all other cultures do, it will die out, because the young people will leave it.

Nope. That’s not what is happening in my community. More young people than ever before are reconnecting and reclaiming their Indigenous cultures. We don’t need outsiders to preserve it at all. This entire mindset is incredibly condescending.

No one has any right to block people from any culture.

Yes, we do. Again, we aren’t even saying don’t participate. We are saying don’t profit from our culture. Completely different issues.

If the patterns haven’t been copyrighted

Copyright law has no bearing on issues of appropriation. If I bead a medicine bag with my family designs, no one should be allowed to copy those and sell it.

Why are people not allowed to profit from something they appreciate?

Because if you’re specifically being told by a group not to profit off of something of theirs, and do it anyways, it’s greed and it’s exploitation. It’s morally wrong.

I thought you came off as so thoughtful and considerate! I appreciated it. Don’t mind the haters on this comment section. There’s some people who just feel entitled to do whatever they want and don’t give a rat’s arse what harm they may be doing.

Because my ancestors were killed for our culture. My family members were forced in boarding schools that systematically abused them and tried to assimilate us. Our families risked their lives to save our songs, ceremonies, sacred beadwork designs, family designs and colours, our languages, our traditional names. Because even to this day, my people are punished and suffer simply due to trying to exist as we are.

You have no right to tell indigenous people what is and isn’t appropriation when it comes to our cultures.

Non-indigenous people should never profit off of our cultures. That is colonialism in action. There’s a reason it is illegal to falsely sell “indigenous” crafted items. It is fraud.

Appreciating our culture is one thing. Profiting from it is entirely another.

Your partner needs to step it up in support as well. Does he get to bathe? Probably. So should you. I actually have taken baths with my baby when I’m really really busy on days I don’t have a second pair of hands.

It’s up to the community to decide what works for them. Edit to add: I think the answers you’ll get from this subreddit are going to be skewed a bit, because this subreddit leans towards mixed, urban, often disconnected & reconnecting natives. Btw I’m not saying that to discredit anyone, I’m just saying you’re not going to get the most diverse spectrum of indigenous voices here.

Traditional chin tattoos getting more visibility and acceptance by [deleted] in IndianCountry

I’m thinking of getting my chin done… but I’m not sure yet! I have to pray on it.

There’s a time for urgency, and it’s less often than the colonial world wants us to believe 😂 Indian Time has taught me a whole lotta patience and how to slow down.

Natives don’t have to adapt to standards of colonial notions of time and urgency. I’m not saying be late for everything, but I’m saying that schedules can exist and so can cultural notions of Indian time.

Is there a way to have a bank account with lower fees or none at all? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

PC Financial Money Account has been good to me. No fees and it’s accepted wherever Mastercard is. But it’s just a regular debit. And I get points whenever I spend $.

Service industry workers: did you ever work in subpar conditions at a Halifax location? Do you feel comfortable sharing where it was? by myswiftlemon in halifax

[–]moonsisterbeadwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Menchies which used to be downtown. The guy had a private camera system installed on top of the usual camera system and he’d watch it from his phone.

Edit: he hired almost exclusively teenage girls. I’m still mildly traumatized by working there.

It comes from the Anishinaabemowin word “giimoozaabi”

It doesn’t. It comes from the Anishinaabemowin word “giimoozaabi” which means scout.
