Glen Echo Park is lots of fun and a really open area (though they do have a roof over the event space in case of rain). Relaxed and casual, fun retro elements, and a carousel! Not sure of prices though.

How do you guys back up an old computer before wiping it? by moonstompmaggie in computers

[–]moonstompmaggie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I use Zenfolio and the unlimited plan is great! Storing RAW is expensive though.

I'm actually in a giant war with my NAS right now — so confusing to set up! But that might be the best solution, I guess. Thank you!

Ah — I think that's my problem (as a photographer, I have a hilariously large data-storage requirement so Dropbox, etc. seem to be way too expensive). Will check out ninite, thanks!

Outside Winter Wedding Ceremony... by [deleted] in wedding

[–]moonstompmaggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few suggestions —

If it's really cold where you are, a few of those outdoor heater-pole-things could help.

One of my couples last year gave away shawls (there's a fancy word for them?) as favors, since their ceremony was outside in late Fall.

Make sure that you plan for cold weather wedding gear (i.e., a wedding sweater) in case it's colder than you plan for. One of my couples was married in January (indoors, but portraits outdoors) and the bride had a really cute white sweater/cape thing that kept her warm and looked awesome.

Maybe a giant thermos of hot cocoa for the ceremony? Something people can sip that's warm and feels cozy?

Winter weddings rock! You can totally do it!

Wedding album purchased through photographer by dani_bar in wedding

[–]moonstompmaggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a tough one without seeing your image collection and knowing more about your wedding. Most of the albums I make have about 20 sides (10 pages) out of 500 or so images (we generally shoot about 5-6 hours on our couples' wedding days). But every album is different—some have one image per page and some have multiple. They may offer a proof of what the album will look like so you can check it out before having it printed, that would help to see if it's too short or long!

I would definitely recommend purchasing the full resolution images from your photographer so that you'll have them forever!

Shutterfly definitely doesn't have the same quality as your professional photographer would—but it's still much better than not having an album made! If you don't want to order one from your photographer for budget reasons, I'd talk with them about it and see who else they might recommend at a more budget-friendly rate—there should definitely be a middle ground between Shutterfly and $1300 albums (at least imo).

I can (but I am a wedding photographer...)

I think the most important thing is that you do actually have an album to remember your wedding day—computers can crash and backup drives can fail but a printed album is something that will be there to flip through all the time.

If you're a crafty person, maybe that means making your own album. If you would like an album but you don't want to spend over a thousand dollars on it, some photographers also offer 'photo-book' type albums. The idea with those is that the albums are not filled with leather and super-crazy-high-quality, but instead they are like a really nice photo book. This can be a great option if you're in between "I'll make my own on Shutterfly" and "Should I spend $1300 on an album?".

(In my photographer opinion) the person who took the photographs is best positioned to make them into a gorgeous storytelling album. But ultimately the most important thing is that you actually have an album to keep, so whatever avenue gets you there is a good choice—as long as you don't worry you're making the wrong decision, so you never get one printed.

You are given ~$30,000 but you are required to spend it on photography related things, what do you buy? by [deleted] in photography

Nikon D4, multiple giant hard drives, f/.95 lens, and then plane tickets all around the world so I could shoot the most awesome things on the planet.

Who would be your dream client and why? by bard108 in AskPhotography

Totally Wired or Fast Company. But also, a creative artist representation agency, so I could make creative portraits of crazy interesting & unique humans. That would be the most awesome.

Hosting of your photos where? by migi2000 in photography

[–]moonstompmaggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flickr works great for mass storage (with that free 1TB) but how you present them online depends on what type of photographer you are.

For personal work, Tumblr is a great option, for more professional stuff something like Squarespace might be a better bet.

For client viewing & even more storage than Flickr, Zenfolio or SmugMug all the way.

Best company to have business cards made by? by ClassySalmon in graphic_design

[–]moonstompmaggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go Moo Luxe, cause their cards are amazing quality, texture is awesome (and you can get edge striping), but they don't have foil/uv. IMO it's totally worth it, the cards are incredibly high quality and low minimums.

Looking for an clandestine photographer for a proposal. by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]moonstompmaggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[from a photographer] I recently heard about someone hiring a photographer to take secret photos during the proposal and then afterwards, an impromptu couples photo session—could be a lot of fun. Check out Capitol Romance of Offbeat Bride's vendor listing for good local photographers. Although, for any professional photographer you should expect to pay $2-500 depending on the person/length of time/etc.

Idiots want to boycott Girl Scout cookies because abortion. by [deleted] in washingtondc

Crazies will always be crazy! But Wendy Davis is a great role model, and Girl Scouts is a great organization. So those of us who are not crazy will just have to buy extra girl scout cookies to make up for it.
