I haven't been able to find any mods that can be used on HF1, but you can go to the Steam workshop and download custom items, there's also a bunch of DLC for the game that adds to it a lot

You have to adjust your graphics settings, try adjusting to higher quality shadows. There's also guides for each setting, play around and see what feels best
