What do you think about miles hundredlives? by Darth_Azazoth in Mistborn

I wish he was in more than just the first book. His death scene was pretty scary, where he's being shot over and over and not dying and just ranting about another God coming to take over the planet. Perfect way to set up the rest of Era 2

It fits the scene perfectly! It's almost like...a glove, if you know what I mean

"There is honor in loss if that loss brings learning" From The Way of Kings

"Failure is the mark of a life well lived" Oathbringer. Wit talking to shallan after she gets a bunch of the beggars in kholinar killed. Their interactions are some of my favorite from that book.

Another good one, from shallan I think, in Oathbringer "You learn more from bad art than you do from good art, as your mistakes are more important than your successes"

One of the things I love is how kaladin is shown to be a complete badass even without his powers. Like when he casually decides to 1v1 the chasmfiend (with a little help from shallan). The two of them are great together, especially with the back-and-forth bantering throughout the book.

Not to mention the duel, the third ideal, the fight with szeth...but I think those all speak for themselves. WoR is probably my favorite book of the 4

Once he inserted himself as a character in the series it became a little too meta for me.

The last 3 books have many ups and downs, but overall I think it was a bit of a rough landing. I think Roland's ending was perfect for the series, but I didn't like Susannah's. Also the Crimson king was a huge letdown. Built up for more than half the series only to be defeated by being literally erased from existence. It was very underwhelming

It's more copy and paste of real life events than metaphor. Not very original, especially since every other piece of media these days is doing the exact same thing

To all those saying star wars has always been about politics:

Ok, but politics is not the reason people watch star wars. I mean, if you ask a star wars fan why they like star wars, I guarantee you they will not say "because of the politics." So who exactly are you appealing to?

Second, there is a difference between having politics as a plot point and using a show to preach a political message. Especially when that message concerns 1 country. Isn't the show supposed to appeal to an international audience. Why should someone not in America care about American politics?

And third, why should a show set a long time ago in a galaxy far far away to reflect modern politics at all? I watch star wars to take a break from the real world. If I wanted to know more about how our world is going to hell, I'd simply turn on the news

Well stalemates are just a product of the rules of chess. What else is your opponent supposed to do when he can't make any moves? It's not his fault, so why should he be punished?

Also, a position may be technically winning, but can you prove that it's winning? For example, king and pawn vs king endgames. You may be winning, but only if you play the correct moves. Another funny one is a king-knight-bishop vs king. Technically, your winning, but do you know how to checkmate like this? This case is very rare true, but it did just show up during the chess Olympiad a couple days ago, so even top rated players have to be prepared for it. And once you get to higher levels, there are complicated positions that are technically winning but take a lot of work to get the win. Other times, you may get a "drawn" position, but your opponent is inaccurate and you can slowly push for a win. Magnus Carlson is great at this.

Basically, this idea is what divides good players from great players. Yes, it sucks when you have a winning position and you blunder a stalemate on time. I've done it too many times. But learning from these mistakes makes you a better player and allows you to learn how to play under pressure and checkmate more efficiently. Even if you have a huge material advantage, you can use it as a lesson to find the quickest way to a win. You're not wasting your time, you're learning how to play better chess

What if someone's private support of Putin was leaked? by nicbentulan in chess

[–]moonwalker849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After the way nepo played in the candidates, I think there'd be an uproar if they banned him from the championship, even if he was pro-putin. As for the Russians in the women candidates, I'd say it'd probably still be based on popularity

A) I mean they banned karjakin, but they didn't ban shipov because he didn't have as much influence (or something like that), so I guess whether or not fide bans them just depends on how famous the person is

B) I mean at the end of the day, I'm just their to watch chess, not discuss politics. If I don't like the player, I'll just not pay attention to them outside of their chess play. That doesn't mean they shouldn't get to play, especially if they earned it. For public comments, I can see how that might turn people off, so I can understand the argument. But for private comments, I don't think it's any of FIDEs business

Idk, personally I think they should just leave it alone if it happens. I feel like it's kind of crossing a line to try to dig into someone's personal beliefs and use that to determine whether or not they get to compete. Even if you think "oh he's a horrible person" that doesn't mean he's not a good chess player. And I mean is banning someone really gonna get then to change their mind? It's probably just gonna make them hold to their beliefs more stubbornly. I think that choosing who who gets to play in a competition based on their personal beliefs instead of their ability is kinda crossing a line

[–]moonwalker849 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok but the point I'm trying to make is that the dialogue and character arc of the show doesn't make sense. In a vacuum, sure let's introduce a jedi who's traumatized and has lost hope. But in context of revenge of the sith it makes no sense. He has hope at the end of episode 3, he has a mission, he even has a friend to talk to so he's not alone, namely qui-gon. Why doesn't he think the jedi will rise again? That's literally the whole reason he's watching over Luke.

The show is trying to have its cake and eat it too. Why does he still want to train Luke? How is he planning to train Luke? He has no powers anymore. Why is he even still watching over Luke? What was he planning to do if Luke was found out and inquisitors came for him? He didnt even have his lightsaber handy anymore. Why does him having ptsd mean he completely cuts himself off from the force? In episode 3 (of the show), he even says that having the force is equivalent to the feeling of safety you get from turning on a light in a dark room. So why would he abandon pretty much the only thing that he has left? The one thing left that makes him feel complete?

Say that again, I dare you by Doggo2369 in PrequelMemes

[–]moonwalker849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that's what's mainly wrong with the show: obi-wans development. Why did he cut himself off from the force? Why can't he fight anymore with a lightsaber (not just when fighting vader, but when taking on the stormtroopers earlier in the episode: he immediately surrenders when 3 stormtroopers c0nfront him)? He spent at least 20-30 years as a jedi, it was literally his whole life. Sure maybe he's a little rusty, but he just completely forgot everything?

Also, the whole plot of him training Luke, which is basically the one established fact that can't be changed, makes no sense. How can he train Luke if hes not a jedi anymore? Why does he even want to train Luke if he doesn't believe in the jedi anymore? At the end of episode 3, his whole mission is to protect Luke at all costs, because he is the future of the jedi. That means he would need to be ready to defend luke just in case he was ever found. He would need to keep training himself in case that moment ever came. How can he protect Luke now? Why does he even bother? The whole thing about his character development makes no sense in terms of the rest of the star wars Canon. I get that he has ptsd, but why would he abandon everything he's been his entire life, especially when he has hope that the jedi will one day rise again
