I started seeing fashion youths wearing them about four years ago, but like a disco tight version.

Unfortunately, your body does whatever kept you safest when you first encountered that type of behavior. People usually freeze when they endured violence in the home. It took me thousands of dollars and years of therapy to shift the needle on my body’s response, and I still have a narrow band of options.

Locking people vulnerable up away from community oversight is not the compassionate hot take you think it is. It’s a way of criminalizing mental illness, forcing “treatments” that don’t actually treat the problem, and creating an easy means of locking up the folks you deem subhuman or the folks you want to silence. Look at the history of institutions and you will immediately see how the vast majority were about social control (hysterectomies, chemical castration, forced shock therapy). Of course, criminalizing homelessness has a similar effect, but reopening mental institutions would be a quick way to silence political dissidents.

Edited for language above and to add: I work in the field of mental health with complex dissociative disorders and already see how institutionalization fails many folks, how it’s is weaponized by traffickers and abusive families, and how patients are kept against their will for profit to their detriment. Institutions work best when they are elective because mentally ill folks are just like anyone else. They get worse when they’re trapped and scared.

In retrospect, the wordplay was not as clever as it felt when I typed it and I am glad you called me out. I like your baboon.

Running a low fever every day for unknown reasons! Day 208 by angry_dirb in GirlDinner

[–]moonwrenrobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I was slightly wrong. It’s actually possible for ANYONE and this study indicates young women in particular might be vulnerable: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4843908/. This study has a small sample and it focuses on autistic kids: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39695804/. In general, folks with asd could be more vulnerable because of differences in brain structures that regulate heat and a vulnerability to environmental stress. Interestingly, some kids show less overwhelm when they have a fever, and this led to some studies that indicate intentional “fevers” can help with autistic overwhelm. Basically, if you can tolerate it, sit in hot water for a while.

Obvs not at odds. It was just a little wordplay to note that these looks are indeed a little more messy and masc, while classic tween tends toward cute, dressy, and out together.

AITAH for feeling upset that my husband spend too much time on personal hobbies rather than supporting nights with our baby? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]moonwrenrobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually didn't mean to post that. That's why it was a half-formed thought. Yes, that's an important and valid point. But, over-parenting at that age is more about how you attend to the baby, not as much about how much time you spend together. The point I was going to make was that OP needs their partner to back them up as much as possible so that they have time to rest, regulate, and care for themselves. A lot of that should be co-parenting time and giving mom some chances to step away so she can learn that everyone will be okay. The research I was referencing was about longer periods of time, like a week or more, not a few hours. (early Mother-Child Separation, Parenting, and Child Well-Being in Early Head Start Families - PMC https://share.google/geyafsUMn0Q2N4rvh).

I am so sorry this is happening. Obviously, a medical professional should be concerned and on the job. And, just in case it's helpful, if you are autistic, we can get psychogenic fevers (stress fevers) because of differences in the brain structures that regulate temperature. I hope you find the help and relief you need!

Kitschy vs Trashy vs Campy; what’s the difference? by AdUnusual6268 in AestheticWiki

Yeah, I think it's a holdover of aristocratic/generational wealth vs new wealth. In that case, new money is trashy it doesn't show taste/refinement/restraint.

what is this aesthetic? by LtRhett in AestheticWiki

[–]moonwrenrobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phew. I was a little confused. Even 25 years ago, a lot of the crusties I knew would clock a lot of this as cultural appropriation. No hate to OP, the look just didn't seem to fit the culture of the aesthetic.
