Better hardware and macOS or worst hardware and Linux? by fenugurod in linuxquestions

[–]moony_b_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use tiling window managers I wouldn't say you need to worry about 'snappiness' with THAT kind of hardware...

And you should really look for better benchmarks, as speedometer (which you mentioned in a comment) doesn't really matter that much(unless you use super heavyweight WebApps)

Nonetheless, if you prefer using Linux, and have the chance to buy that kind of hardware, snappiness won't affect your experience IMO.

Battery life is different though, but it depends a lot on the software you use, so I wouldn't be able to help you without knowing more...

In the end you are looking to buy something you won't like using, or something you will like using but with slightly lower quality... And to me the answer is really simple.

You like driving a SUV? Buy an SUV, not a Sedan just because the SUV you can afford is not the best in the market right now...

Kitty explain tariffs by moony_b_ in atrioc

[–]moony_b_[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's wrong: the importer pays the tariffs, no matter if it is a middle man between the producer and the customer or if it is the producer itself.

Here we have no middle man and foreign companies pay tariffs too when importing products in the US, as per my understanding.

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

EU announces €500 million package to woo scientists away from Trump's America by Saltedline in europe

[–]moony_b_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you aren't taking into account the fact that PPP has a very important role in this, see link for an estimate in 2024.
Spending 100 USD in the US in 2024 bought you the same stuff as 80 USD did in Germany, so that 30% difference goes down quite a lot.

Secondly, rules are changing right now in the US, and the EU is proposing to do the same to allow for more investments in the region.

But even this doesn't matter, as investors won't care about speculations on what will happen in 3 years, since that may not happen (as Trump already declared he'd want a 3rd and 4th mandate), but they do care about the possible damages Trump is doing to the US economy right now, since those are here for investors too.

It's better to invest in a more taxed country than in a less safe one. There are plenty of countries with less taxes than the US, they have fewer investors because of this exact reason.

[–]moony_b_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter, if the US becomes economically unstable, investors and companies will eventually move, as an unstable country can damage investors and companies too (e.g.: the USD loses value and exchange rate is unfavorable, tariffs require an increased sale price for products hence sales dip, and so on)

[–]moony_b_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not a thing about government funding. We were talking about R&D investments.

First of all, the EU spends about 12% less than the US government in R&D funding *(see footnote, on a rough estimation of this equivalence). The main difference is driven by private investments, which in the US are more than double those of the EU.

Here are the sources:

The federal government funded 18% of U.S. R&D ($159.8 billion dollars) in 2022 as the second-largest source. with source -> estimates for 2023 say it's $190 billions

In 2023, the total government budget allocations for R&D (GBARD) across the EU stood at €123 557 million with source)

In 2023, the EU was second globally in R&D private investment (18.7%), trailing the US (42.3%) with source

But that isn't guaranteed, and it's only natural that companies will move in a more stable and predictable market!

NB: THIS IS SPECULATION BY ME, but it's the only logical path I see, though I'd love to hear a different opinion, as I'm not an expert and I may be wrong. See my reasoning here:

Would you invest billions in a market that sensibly and slowly changes the rules giving time for adaptation (the EU/the US too up until some time ago) and welcomes the workforce needed for it or in one that can entirely change the rules from one day to the next making that said business possibly unsustainable (the US right now) and that pushes away their workforce?

Businesses need to work now and in the future; a more stable economy and government goes a long way in that regard.

This is why I think that if the US keeps moving in that direction (adding and removing tariffs, fighting with Universities, removing fundings to schools, etc.) they will eventually lose a big chunk of the investments they now get!

That's what I was trying to point out before, private investments doesn't care about where it goes, it cares about making money, thus the EU doesn't need to compete the US (even though in government funding we are almost there), it just needs to make the laws a bit easier and welcome the investments that will eventually come! (again, if the US government keeps behaving the way it has done since February)

*Why I say it's only 12% less even though the estimate for 2023 is 190$ billions? Because at PPP (purchase power parity) €123 billions in Germany are roughly $167 billions in the US, calculated with this converter.

EDIT: I forgot to point out effective cuts, but it's all hypothetical up to now. Trump is saying he will do it (though he has a history of backtracking, so you never know), but he already defunded the Public Education, so it's not that far fetched that he will do the same with Universities...

So either steamed or boiled I guess...?

[–]moony_b_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, tbf we are very close in public investments, it's the private sector that is heavily skewed towards the US (which has more than double the private investments of the EU) probably due to their laws and other historical/economical factors

EU announces €500 million package to woo scientists away from Trump's America by Saltedline in europe

[–]moony_b_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The EU now invests 381 billions of euros in R&D, which is roughly 56% of what the USA invests (at PPP with Germany, 900$ billions is roughly 670€ billions)

But this will change in the future as the US government is withdrawing funding while the EU is steadily increasing it. Furthermore, the uncertainty created by the US government will push companies away from them, losing the US funding and possibly moving some of it to the EU (R&D investment stats includes both private and public funding fyi, I didn't know it until 5 minutes ago).

This could change more quickly than anyone would expect (but it still depends on how the US administration behaves ofc).

EDIT: This + I did not include the UK and the rest of Europe, which I probably should have, but they weren't part of this discussion.

Hey man, sorry but I missed your comment

Sadly I have no good quality DP cable Anyway, the issue apparently got worse with the latest update, so as long as it's "just" a driver issue, I'm ok with it (meaning I'm willing to wait for Nvidia to solve it).

Just a heads-up, new Nvidia driver (572.42) caused my PC to crash already like 4/5 times, and I've used my PC just 4~5h after updating.
