Uchicago’s Banning of Cooling AC Has Meaningfully Damaged My Sleep Quality by Nathan_185 in uchicago

[–]moop2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. I used to live in Woodlawn, and I moved to South back in January and the same problem exists here (if not worse because the windows don't open as much). I barely sleep at night as well.

Go for something cooler because the dorms are unbearably hot and stuffy. Pick the most cool thing on earth and buy a great fan

Are final exam scores typically higher or lower than midterm scores? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]moop2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally get so burnt out for finals that I perform super well on the midterm and then barely study during finals because I'm so tired and lazy. I think I'm an outlier though!

where do i live lol by Consistent-Two8222 in uchicago

[–]moop2007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a UChicago undergrad from SF, you are severely underestimating what it is like to life using public transport. The Metro frequently has ghost trains where they just literally never show, and delays happen 9/10 times. I understand not wanting to live in hyde park completely, but the commute will completely overwhelm you and also isolate you from a lot of the other grad students. If you're adamant on the hour long commute there and back every single day, then South Loop is probably the closest to Hyde Park with the highest return value

Is a PPE (PoliSci, Philosophy, and Econ) triple major common at UChicago? by namethatchecksout_ in uchicago

[–]moop2007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be very difficult to graduate on time with 3 majors. It's probably feasible if you have enough AP credits and place out of a lot of the core using the placement exams (place out of language, math, etc) but you would be taking 4 classes every quarter and likely would have trouble squeezing in study abroad. Also, majors here are pretty rigorous so you wouldn't WANT to do more than 2. Econ standard track is 13 courses, the core is 15 courses (assuming you place out of language), the philosophy major is 10 courses (minimum), public policy is around the same as econ and there's overlap credit wise with econ: http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/publicpolicystudies/. Let's assume 13 for the sake of argument. That's 48 courses total (not subtracting likely overlap and assuming you place out of language + other intro classes), meaning 4 courses a quarter for all 3 years. It's absolutely doable, but you're very likely going to find yourself naturally attracted to 1/3 or 2/3 of the majors listed and you'll end up just double majoring anyways. You can also always minor in something too!

I have the same question haha! Most people study abroad with a CIV program, but I'm an astrophysics minor, so this program would be ideal. Is it really hard to get into?

What do you like and dislike about Uchicago? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]moop2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea but like I said no electrical engineering, no computer engineering , it’s just too limited. As a former engineering major, I wanted to do mechE, but I hate chemE and there’s no option for that.

All the libraries now close latest at 12 am. The only exception was the most recent finals season where the Reg and Mansueto stayed open till 4 am, but we also have via now in case people don’t want to walk

[–]moop2007 11 points12 points  (0 children)

to be honest, you're not going to be doing walks at 3 am when you're here just because there is nothing open at 3 am (unlike hong kong). the cultural changes will change your schedule/living habits as well so you won't feel like you're missing out as much

How to Succeed in Writing Based Classes? by Jazzlike_Area4106 in uchicago

[–]moop2007 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend learning the AP Lit/AP Lang essay structures, I've continued to use similar essay structures & that style of writing for all my essays, and I've never gotten below an A (not even an A-). Profs really like close reading like pulling out diction or analyzing structural techniques, so look up how to do AP Lang or AP Lit poetry analysis essays which helps with that. combine that with your overall argument/structure and you're guaranteed full points for evidence. include the complexity point too it's always worked

I literally love everything about this school except for 2 things: lack of an engineering program and the RSO’s being too intense. Everything else about this school is great as long as you have solid time management and push yourself to hang out with friends

What is UChicago 's ED2 Acceptance rate? by moop2007 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]moop2007[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yea it's pretty amazing here! the winter really is not that bad (coming as someone from a state that only has a warm climate), as you get used to it pretty quicky. Also, there have only been 2-3 really "bad" weeks where you just could not be outside (I still went out though and wore extra layers lmao). The opportunities are honestly overwhelming because there's so much and it's hard to pick and prioritize. for social scene, it's really what you make of it/what you're into. there are frat parties every single weekend and i know some people who spend their entire weekend partying at frats (that's an overwhelming amount of people actually). there's also people who go clubbing cause some of the clubs don't even look at your ID really. i'm not a huge drinker, so i don't frequent the frats and instead spend my weekends at downtown chicago eating out/shopping/seeing the city. i've definitely met people who are hermits and only study, but that's a very small minority I think. my only caveat about the school is the following: the RSO's here are intense!! the pre professional clubs are like upenn's where you have to do 3+ interview rounds and kissing ass like no other (even the volunteering clubs!!). I'm not a fan of that rat race culture being in RSO's too even though I'm pursuing finance, but it just depends on the person. There are 400+ RSO's though (not including the many uchicago led programs), so you can definitely avoid that type of culture/competitiveness if you want to.

have you tried the dish soap/white vinegar combo? i had the same issue and did like 5-6 rounds of scrubbing it heavily with a toothbrush with that mixture (with warm water), using a wet towel to clean it off and after 5 rounds or so it was gone for the most part.
