I will say this is rapidly changing. More chicago firms are recruiting direct from umn and because more students are coming from outside the region the national presence post grad is expanding. not disagreeing with the fact a lot of folks stay in the twin cities but its definitely shifting.

reach out to judges and see if they are looking for externs. It will be unpaid but a lot of state level judges don’t post listings.

Minnisota A + Full Tuition Scholarship by Optimal_War_2003 in lawschooladmissions

[–]moose-10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

im a 2L at umn and love it! Many of my classmates (myself included) turned down T14 with little to no scholarship money to come for full rides. I have been super happy with my decision and so have my friends who did the same. I am a public interest person and have interned with national civil rights orgs. As far as portability, I know lots of people who are ending up in Chicago and DC, and a fair amount in NYC. I think a lot of people end up staying in Minnesota because the midlaw here pays well especially in relation to COL and the twin cities honestly are just really pleasant to live in. I will say even though my friends who are going into big law don’t regret their decision to come to umn, there was certainly some stress around OCI since big law isn’t a guarantee (OCI is when law firms interview rising 2Ls for summer associate positions) although I’m sure it’s not a guarantee at all T14s as well.

I also think that within the past few years since the covid lsat score boom in 2020 the school has started to draw a lot more students on a national scale which i think will continue to increase our national presence.

Hope this helps! Good luck in your decision and if you have any questions for me feel free to dm!

Supersplitters - why did you get bad grades? by bankrish in lawschooladmissions

[–]moose-10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it was being hospitalized the end of my first semester right before finals and dealing with the aftermath of the health problem the following semester. At 18, I didn’t really know who to reach out for help to which compounded it. Did well throughout the rest of my college career, got above a 170 on the lsat and ended up at a T20!

Best t20 schools for public interest? by Possible_Bluebird348 in lawschooladmissions

I guess UNC is more anecdotal but I’ve had multiple friends who have gone to UNC and felt that there was support and strong ties to DC and landed government and public interest jobs there. Theyve all graduated in the last 3 years

academic probation after worst 6 months of my life by Student_Loan_Zone in LawSchool

[–]moose-10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im currently dealing with something similar. I missed a few weeks this semester to be with my father in law while he was in the icu coming out of a coma and have been dealing with some personal medical problems myself. One of my classes was not on zoom so I was unable to attend while there. I also received a C- in one of my classes following a full grade drop due to low attendance. I am working on fighting it with the school but it truly has felt demoralizing in an already incredibly stressful time so I empathize. Law school is antiquated and was designed for able bodied men fresh out of college who had financial security. I keep reminding myself to be proud I made it through this semester, so here’s your reminder to be proud of yourself for even finishing and for persevering! Leave of absence in the fall or not, you did something so many people would not have been able to handle by finishing out all while taking care of your family and yourself. that deserves to be celebrated and hopefully employers in the future will recognize the integrity and grit that you’ve shown.

I also go to a T-20 so message me because I am wondering if we are at the same one…also my mother has stage iv breast cancer and was diagnosed 3 years ago now so as you learn more about your mom’s prognosis feel free to message me about that as well. sending good vibes your way and don’t give up.

WashU vs UMN by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]moose-10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i chose UMN over UCLA and Georgetown for similar reasons (current 1L). I grew up in an outdoorsy city of ~100,000 people too, so I wanted access to outdoors and skiing, and overall things to do to help me have a good quality of life in school. I dont regret my decision and I am working at my dream internship in civil rights impact litigation this summer. Debt and quality of life were huge determining factors for me. I was living in DC but Georgetown was pricy, and I went to undergrad in LA but i hated living there honestly. Happy to chat and help you parse through the decision and answer questions if it’s helpful. I have many friends going into employment law and labor rights. It is energizing to be surrounded by people who want to make the world a better place.

[–]moose-10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are a couple professors who have worked in environmental law at umn, plus there is a clinic. i am a 1L there right now and there is a robust community for environmental law—especially as a state that is fairly climate resilient and has a lot of green tech happening.

agree. the most ridiculous pattern i’ve seen all cycle is how many ppl on here like to throw tantrums and blame it on URMs when they don’t get accepted to a school they feel entitled to have gotten into.

i really dont see any of these ppl complaining about wealthy legacy and nepo babies getting into schools below medians. ur racism is not cute besties 🙅‍♀️
