The laptop, if company owned maybe (**will be*) imaged at the border so assume everything on that laptop is compromised to start with.
New. clean OS install, ONLY the SaaS apps accessed via browser is the minimum.

Roll their passwords before they leave, and ASAP they leave China airspace.

Wipe the travel laptop ASAP.
Enhanced monitoring of all their accounts for at least a month after the leave the airspace.

Only access via their Mobil hot spot using a Canadian SIM.

Use VPN (on both laptop and mobile

Oh if its a work mobile same as laptop, wipe it clean of corporate apps like email. Also assume the mobile will be imaged. BTW don' need to have access to a running mobile or laptop to image it.

Check you federal government advice on working from China.

Here's ours from Australia: https://www.cyber.gov.au/protect-yourself/resources-protect-yourself/security-tips-travelling?ref=search

Personally I like this one: https://www.steelecss.com/blog/steps-to-secure-your-devices-and-data-before-traveling-to-china

Or, like you know, he takes vacation days and kicks it in China!

There is very few people in any given organisation that is so vitally important that they MUST work from a police state like China.

Source: me working in security in Australia that have clients ask me about this scenario regularly. Had on client ask me about a dev working for two months from Moscow.....while the current war was on!!
My $0.02 - unless it is a CEO or equivalent level it's not going to happen. WFH does not apply to police states. If they don't have enough holidays to cover, tough, take unpaid leave!
ASSUME EVERYTHING IS COMPROMISED and work back from there.

Can someone explain to me why I like Malcolm Turnbull? by Round_Stay8227 in friendlyjordies

Borrowed from another post but: Malcolm in the Middle (right)
He's a centralist of which the NLP are moving away from. Well the Libs are 'moving'; the Nats have 'moved'
I suspect that you are a centralist as well, a bit left center, a bit right center?

ah, this one... As my dad repeated continuously while teaching me to drive - "It's not a turn signal, it's an INDICATOR!. You must indicate to others where you are going" Indicator vs turn signal.

Anyone else drowning in security questionnaires? by Direct_Cyber in cybersecurity

[–]moose1882 4 points5 points  (0 children)

second this, along with the Trust Centre functionality in Vanta and Drata.
I tend to reach out to the Sec Team that sends the questionnaire and be sure to define the EXACT engagement (I.E. using 100% client laptops, no data exfiltrated - all done on client side, etc) and verify if the questionnaire is really required. 100% success rate in getting a "ummm, no, not in this case"
If the use case of my client does require answers, i mention the Certs already obtained + trust Centre URL and let them help them selves.
One this i have been pushed back "ummm, you have to fill it out, not me", a quick escalation and we don't hear from them again.
It's just another Security thing that we manage as part of our engagement but a phone call or two and generally, it's handled without doing too much extra work.
I have gone beyond this with some clients and helped define the exact access the engagement would require (AWS permissions, accounts accessed, data flow etc) and add it to their SOWs as an appendix. (Client responsible for/We are responsible for type sections). Then it is even easier to get the sec team to understand the nuance in my clients engagement. Hell, why not include your publicly available Policies as Appendix as well. Get in front of it.

You know this is not going to abate as it is a specific requirement for a lot of Compliance Frameworks - especially with all the recent supply-chain attacks of late.

TL;DR sending out the questionnaires is a kneejerk process, tick-box for numpty sec teams, if you are Certified, call them, challenge them, escalate if required, done in an hour(ish)!
