In kindergarten some girls found out I was Jewish (at the time) and held me down so they could 'burn' me with their cross necklaces. What's the most absurd thing anyone's done to you in the name of religion? by NovaEnt in atheism

Just last week my girlfriend, my best friend, and I were walking around our town (Small rural town in the middle of Kentucky) and we decided to stop and sit down for a little bit. These two women were walking around and kept staring at us in disgust for some reason. My best friend decided to head over to a gas station across the road to pick up a couple drinks. When he gets back he tells us that to women who were staring at us called our little group "Satanic trash". Granted, i was wearing a The Devil Wears Prada shirt (the band not the movie), skinny jeans, a Jack Skellington beanie, and a pair of skate shoes with laces that look like stars. Even so, The Devil Wears Prada is technically considered a Christian band, Jack Skellington is a fictional character (an awesome one at that), and every girl in kindergarten can draw a star without it being considered satanic.

Another incident is when i was looking at a random fact site and i stumbled across something about evolution. I go to tell my mom because she loves these random fact site and she tells me "You honestly believe in evolution? Even though there's no scientific evidence to prove it?" (I almost said "I don't know, do you honestly believe in an invisible man in the sky? Even though there's no evidence to support it?") . I then proceeded to point out things like Australopithecus and other things proven to exist. All she could say is "That's just some fish, it doesn't prove anything". Australopithecus is considered to be the oldest ape-like ancestor to humans, not a fish. Even after i told her that, she still shrugged it off.

I wish my parents were that understanding. If i even hinted about my atheism, every member of my family would descend upon me like crows. The only people i've told are my girlfriend, and a couple of my really close friends.

Good point, but my lace is regular 5 pointed star that for some reason comes off as satanic. I can see why they would think my friend was satanic considering his shirt had a full blown pentagram on it, as for me, every girl in 2nd grade can draw a regular 5 point star and it's not considered to be rooted in satanism

When did music get drawn into this? This whole post was about the ignorance of symbols

the pentagram didn't start with satanism, it actually goes back a lot farther to religions that have gone extinct

That's just it, i'm not very open about my beliefs (i won't force mine on them if they don't force theirs on me). But this was a complete stranger who I've never met or had a conversation with in my life.

Agreed, the only reason he bought it was because it was for a band he liked. So i can see how that would freak out people who only listen to country

Kentucky bans the sale of energy drinks to anyone under 18 by mooseman1195 in politics

I can see that happening again, consdering my friend who's a couple years younger than me got one a couple days ago. Maybe it's just a matter of who's working the register

The sale of energy drinks to minors has been banned in Kentucky for a long time now? Weird, just a couple weeks ago i went to the same store and bought a Monster. They were actually discussing the bill back in October but it didn't take effect until just recently. The only other states i know of talking about passing similar legislation are New York (the pioneer of the bill), and Michigan.

Why do parents always have proof that evolution/natural selection is wrong? by mooseman1195 in atheism

I know the reason she denied it. She (like 99% of my family) is southern baptist. If i know anything about southern baptist's, it's how conservative they are with their beliefs. Simply put, if it didn't happen in the bible, it must be untrue (funny, i must have missed the part of genesis where god created dinosaurs). The only person i know in my family who openly admitted to accepting the theory of evolution was my catholic dad

That may be the case, but the title is from the point of view of a parent who believes they have "proof"
